Our Times, Our Challenges: What Kind of JNUSU Do We Need? .
''JNU Students Union president V Lenin Kumar said the issue of Mishra being a 'Maoist courier' is debatable and the union will take a decision only after there is more clarity. "I have been on JNU campus since 2007 and I have never heard of any such activity on the campus," Lenin said." -I ndian Express, Sun Aug 25 2013 .
Addressing a press conference here, members of Jawaharlal Nehru Univers1ty Students' Union (JNUSU) said Mishra was a cultural activist who had been "arb1trarily" arrested by the Maharashtra Pohce...JNUSU general secretary S hakeel Anjum said M1shra was phys1cally challenged and was being wrongly projected as a 'prominent Naxal courier' to the media by the police. "We condemn the fictitious and surreptitious arrest of Hem. He is physically challenged and has undergone two major operations in h1s left hand in the recent post. This is clearly an act of state terror," Anjum said." -Business Sta.ndard August 26. 2013 .
A former JNU stude'!_t Hem Mishra gets arrested and branded a 'Maoist courier' by the Maharoshtra Police-the same police tha:t has been witch-hunting the Kabir Kala Mench; the same charge as against Soni Sori. The JNUSV General Secretary. along with representatives of the entire JNU community put out a hard-hitting statement in a Press Conference promptly. The outgoing JNUSU President. however, only manages to say that the issue was "debatable'' .
and that the JNUSU would wait for "more clarity" before taking a decision. .
Subsequently. the JNUSU President (and his organisation DSF) remained conspicuously absent f rom the Press .
Conference held in the JNUSU Office on August 26th. where representatives of AISA, SFI, AISF, Students Islamic Organization, NagaStudy Forum, United Dalit Students Forum, Untouchable India, Krantikari Nawjawan, RCF, Bahroop, JSM. as well as several JNU faculty members including Prof Lobiyal and Prof KJ Mukherjee condemned the arrest. .
The outgoing JNUSU President's lack of 'clarity' comes from the DSF's ambivalent stand on state terror in the .
name of combating Maoism . When Operation Greenhunt comes to our doorstep and a JNU student becomes its target, can we really afford to have a JNUSU leadership that lacks the 'clarity' to oppose it? .
Friends, the JNUSU elections this year are being held in very challenging times for the country, and for students. We need a .
JNUSU that is committed to spirited and prompt, pnncipled intervention on the politics of witch-hunt and war on people, communal-.
corporate fascist offensive, violence against women, and policy offensive on higher education and social inclusion. AI SA and its .
JNUSU leaderships have an unblemished track record oftimely and powerful intervention on all these issues, both inside JNU .
and beyooo. .
Throughout last year, as well, AI SA and the JNUSU office bearers from AISA upheld this track record admirably. AI SA played a significantrole in the movement against rape, helping to shiftthefocus ofthe movement to women's freedom, and sustaining the movementto press for implementation of the Justice Verma report. AISA has mobilised students in Delhi againstthe policy offensive on higher education in the for;m of FYUP (which affects not only DU but also JNU students by eroding the job prospects of JNU research scholars). AISA Jed the powerful students' protest against the communal fascist Modi's visi·t to SRCC. AISAhas also taken consistent initiatives against minoritywitch-hunt, with AI SA's JNUSU office bearers supporting the .
struggle forjustice at Batla House, and visiting Luck nowin solidarity with struggle against custodial killing ofKhalid Mujahid. AISA and its JNUSU office bearers also extended supportfor the struggles ofJamia Millia Islamia students. .
JNU students have also witnessed how, in keeping with AISA's commitment to social transformation, AISA since March 2012 visualised and introduced several key policy-level issues and putthem firmly on the map ofJNU's student movement such as reduction ofweightage ofviva marks; holding ofmandatoryOrientation Programmes on GenderIssues; setting upofa JNU Press; and expanding the time period ofthe UGC fellowships to coverthe entire research period. .
Some Significant JNUSU Achievements for Students' Rights In the Past Year .
Protracted struggles were fought, significant advancements have happened on some of our demands; yet on some issues struggles have to be taken forward in the days to come. .
.
The path-breaking step of setting up the JNU Press has been initiated, and the JNUSU representatives in the Library Committee have ensured transparency, accountability and democratic functioning during the entire process. .
.
.
Remoteaccess tothe Central Library's database has been introduced, whereby any JNU student can accessthe JNU library resources from any part of the world. Library infrastructure including computer, software, and reading room facillties has also been upgraded considerably. Library Convenor also alertly protested against undue surveillance. .
.
.
The UGC's attempts to curtail JRF fellowships in the name of "fund cuts" and to curtail reservation in JRF through was resisted. .
.
.
A protracted struggleto double the MCM amount and to extend the time period ofthe UGC fellowships forced a highly reluctant JNU administration to enhance the MCM toRs 2000 and to create a corpus fund for research scholars during 4th and 5th year. This struggle to double the MCM amount however continues, and has to be taken to its logical conclusion. .
.
.
After protracted struggles. SPS dorm facilities for 150 students with mess facilities for Rs 1965 was ensured. We must struggle for immediate construction of hostels proposed under 12th Plan to resolve the huge crisis of hostel 1i64! .
