I finally splurged and bought myself a remote... sadly this is the picture I came up with tonight... hopefully it will allow me to get some more creative shots (as I haven't been so much lately... sorry!)
The remote is constructed of 2" high-density foam coated in a white vinyl-like fabric. I wanted it to be flexible, not just a stiff cardboard box. He was actually able to sit down in the costume... not especially comfortably, but it was an option.

(So, I set my 100mm Macro Lens up next to the post I know the birdies perch on in my garden...., focused on the perch, switched it onto Manual focus, dialed in f8, messed with the settings... and started making my beads.
As soon as I saw a bird on the perch I waited a few seconds before pressing the remote tigger, I wanted to get him doing something different... hey presto.

My daughter is doing a play for 4 nights, not part of her required coursework.
The parts were originally double cast but one of the boys had to pull out and the other girl doing the main part was only turning up for the rehearsals not her normal coursework so had to be dropped
We are off to see it on Friday!
