After a day of chasing WMSR 1309 up and down the mountains of Western Maryland, rolling back into downtown Cumberland, I spotted a CSX freight facing westbound with BNSF and Ferrormex power on lead. Seen here on the northern end of the Cumberland yard leads, next to the Amtrak Cumberland Station.

A very long way from anywhere. One of the most wonderfully remote amenities in this part of the world. Situated along the Winton to Boulia road. The bold colours of this landscape, set against the industrial greys of this unlikely infrastructure, appeals to me.

Took a trip to Craster Northumberland this morning it was a very clear not so inspiring sky.
I did take some shots but I wasn't very happy as they lacked a certain magic.
I was joined by Steve pictured & his side kick Gwen I managed to fall on my ass and the new camera met some sea water as did my leg and as the icy water flooded in to my wellies I decided it was time to head home.

This view of the Pacific Ocean in the far distance was from a forest service road in the mountains of the Olympic Peninsula; elevation here was about 5000 ft (1500 meters). The road went on from here, but it was closed for wildlife management. I was glad we had the 4X4, or we would not have even tried to get here due to the steep grades.
You can get a feel for the dense forest of mixed conifers and deciduous trees, and there is no evidence of recent logging in this vista, somewhat unusual for the Olympic Peninsula.

The elephant trainer calls out commands to his prize elephant. This worked fine until the elephant got tired of being bossed around and pushed over the tower.
I am starting to play with a remote flash to see how the light effects the shadows. I was bouncing the light off the ceiling. I also thought it would bounce off the wall lighting the right front. I found out that didn't work as I expected.

Direction sign on the remote single track road to Lochbuie and Croggan on the Isle of Mull Scotland.
Despite being a single track road and somewhat remote location these roads are some of the most smooth roads I've driven along.

Poem.
The West Coast of Scotland starts so green, low and mellow on the golfing links of Ayrshire.
So verdant, forested and peaceful in the convoluted yachting havens of Argyll or Dalraida.
By Lochaber the Nevis Range dominate the mountain backcloth of long “Sounds” and sea lochs.
Ardnamurchan, Arisaig and Morar has balmy silver sands and island vistas of so many films and documentaries.
Knoydart to Torridon, harsh bare rock and steep slopes of fjord-like sea-lochs.
Gairloch to Gruinard, a series of broad bays backed by distant mountain vistas.
Sutherland, unique.
From an endless swathe of *“knock and lochan” hinterland, the low-hill profile is dramatically broken by stark, ominous, monolithic mountains rising from the ancient bedrock like the back of a monstrous dinosaur rising from its slumbers.
Here, in Assynt, the coastline is undramatic but austere.
Ancient, bare-rock headlands are pristine and pure,
punctuated by dazzling, isolated bays of silver-white sand.
Beautiful, but quite unpretentious.

This locomotive, scrapped in July 2017 was a reserve Locomotive, primarily used to move "Flirts" or coaches into a workshop in Basel, known as the RKZ. Usually a smaller unit does the job via remote control. Stadler trains are brought here from all over Switzerland to be have their wheels worked on.
This was one of the 14 remaining Ee 3/3s in active service in Switzerland. Their numbers have been declining rapidly over the past few years (136 were originally built).
As remote as can be Dusky Sound in Fiordland is accessible only by ship. There are no roads, farms, towns or any permanent dwellings for miles.
Pueblo Bonito
Chaco Culture National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park hosting the densest and most exceptional concentration of pueblos in the American Southwest. The park is located in northwestern New Mexico, between Albuquerque and Farmington, in a remote canyon cut by the Chaco Wash. Containing the most sweeping collection of ancient ruins north of Mexico, the park preserves one of the most important pre-Columbian cultural and historical areas in the United States.
Between AD 900 and 1150, Chaco Canyon was a major center of culture for the Ancient Pueblo Peoples. Chacoans quarried sandstone blocks and hauled timber from great distances, assembling fifteen major complexes that remained the largest buildings in North America until the 19th century. Evidence of archaeoastronomy at Chaco has been proposed, with the "Sun Dagger" petroglyph at Fajada Butte a popular example. Many Chacoan buildings may have been aligned to capture the solar and lunar cycles, requiring generations of astronomical observations and centuries of skillfully coordinated construction. Climate change is thought to have led to the emigration of Chacoans and the eventual abandonment of the canyon, beginning with a fifty-year drought commencing in 1130.
Comprising a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the arid and sparsely populated Four Corners region, the Chacoan cultural sites are fragile – concerns of erosion caused by tourists have led to the closure of Fajada Butte to the public. The sites are considered sacred ancestral homelands by the Hopi and Pueblo people, who maintain oral accounts of their historical migration from Chaco and their spiritual relationship to the land. Though park preservation efforts can conflict with native religious beliefs, tribal representatives work closely with the National Park Service to share their knowledge and respect the heritage of the Chacoan culture.
The park is on the Trails of the Ancients Byway, one of the designated New Mexico Scenic Byways.
Pueblo Bonito (Spanish for beautiful town), the largest and best-known great house in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, northern New Mexico, was built by the Ancestral Puebloans, who occupied the structure between AD 828 and 1126.
In January 1941, a section of the canyon wall known as Threatening Rock, or tse biyaa anii'ahi (leaning rock gap) in Navajo, collapsed as a result of a rock fall, destroying some of the structure's rear wall and a number of rooms. The builders of Pueblo Bonito appear to have been well aware of this threat, but chose to build beneath the fractured stone anyway. The wall stood 97 feet (30 m) high and weighed approximately 30,000 tons; the Puebloans compensated by building structural reinforcements for the slab. Pueblo Bonito is considered the most famous Chaco site and was a large D-shaped building that housed many.
In 2009, traces of Mexican cacao from at least 1,200 miles (1,900 km) away were detected in pottery sherds at Pueblo Bonito. This was the first demonstration that the substance, important in rituals, had been brought into the area that became the United States at any time before the Spanish arrived around 1500. Cylindrical pottery jars, common in Central America, had previously been found there, but are rare. 111 jars have been found in Pueblo Bonito's 800 or so rooms.
The National Park Service website states: "Pueblo Bonito is the most thoroughly investigated and celebrated cultural site in Chaco Canyon. Planned and constructed in stages between AD 850 to AD 1150 by ancestral Puebloan peoples, this was the center of the Chacoan world." According to the anthropologist Brian Fagan, "Pueblo Bonito is an archeological icon, as famous as England's Stonehenge, Mexico's Teotihuacan, or Peru's Machu Picchu."

Der abgelegene und unwirtliche Canyon im Nordwesten New Mexicos, zwischen Albuquerque und Farmington, repräsentiert einen wichtigen Teil des Kulturerbes Amerikas. Am 11. März 1907 wurde der Chaco Canyon als Chaco Canyon National Monument zum National Monument der Vereinigten Staaten, am 19. Dezember 1980 wurde das vom National Park Service verwaltete Schutzgebiet ausgeweitet und als Chaco Culture National Historical Park zum National Historical Park. Am 8. Dezember 1987 wurde er in die Liste des UNESCO-Welterbes aufgenommen. 19. August 2013 wurde das Gebiet von der International Dark Sky Association als Lichtschutzgebiet ausgewiesen, das die astronomische Bedeutung und Funktion der Stätte dem Besucher erfahrbar erhalten soll, und nennt sich seither auch Chaco Culture International Dark Sky Park. Damit ist er nach dem ungarischen IDSP Hortobágyi das zweite Welterbe mit Lichtschutzmaßnahmen, und die weltweit erste UNESCO-Welterbestätte der Baudenkmalklasse, die auch Lichtschutzgebiet wurde (DSAG-Klasse 3 Dark Sky Heritage Site).
Pueblo Bonito ist das größte Bauwerk im Chaco Canyon, US-Bundesstaat New Mexico. Die Pueblo-Kultur bauten und bewohnten dieses Bauwerk zwischen 823 und 1126 n. Chr. Ex GWR Manor Class No. 7812 Erlestoke Manor makes its way north along the former Carmarthen to Aberystwyth line towards Bronwydd Arms station. The Class of locomotive together with the three MK1 coaches in tow, would have been a typical rail passenger service in the last years of use before its closure under the Beeching axe in 1965.
Day 112 - Evil Pinocchio. I meant to design a photo for this Evil Pinocchio as well as the other figures, but I ran out of time, so I have been waiting to post my figures. This evil pinocchio features a custom nose for an angry Pinocchio (for you see, little did he know that when the Blue Fairy turned him into a real boy, she forgot to tell him that if he lied, his nose would continue to grow, and after years of lying, his new appendage was unsightly and angered him. Due to this, he created a remote control figure to drill into Gepettos head, and surgically install a wooden nose with leaves.
