Remembering Harry Redford and the White Bull
In Queensland, in the 1870s, bushcraft, courage and delivering a bloody nose to the owners (“toffs”) of the new, and huge, cattle stations was seen as an heroic and noble endeavour worthy of admiration, not censure.
Harry Redford who, less than a decade after Burke and Wills had so comprehensively lost their way in western Queensland, stole 100 bullocks, 100 cows, 100 heifers, 100 steers and one white bull from Bowen Downs Station and drove them down the Cooper Creek and into South Australia.
It was an extraordinary achievement which Rolf Boldrewood later used as the basis for his novel Robbery Under Arms with its main character Captain Starlight. In old age people used to refer to Redford as “Captain Starlight”.
The only problem with the achievement was that none of the cattle belonged to Redford. While working on Bowen Downs this enterprising son of a convict (he was born near the Hawkesbury River in 1842 and was a huge man who stood over two metres tall) realised that Bowen Downs, which was running around 70,000 head on 1.75 million acres, really wouldn't miss 401 cattle.
His only mistake was the white bull. He needed it as the leader but it was very distinctive and easily identifiable.
Redford drove the cattle 1300 km through marginal desert country down the Cooper Creek to the Blanche Water station in northern South Australia where he sold them for £5000.
However the disappearance of the white bull was noted and in February 1871 Redford was arrested and brought back to Roma to be tried.
From the outset the trial was more entertainment than serious investigation. Locals, captivated by Redford's consummate bushcraft and daring, packed the courtroom. The white bull stood in a yard outside the courthouse. Forty-one of the forty-eight people called as possible jurors were dismissed because they were prejudiced. The white bull took part in a bovine line up with twenty other bulls and was immediately identified by its owner.
The evidence against Redford was overwhelming. The defence offered no witnesses and complained that Redford had been gaoled without trial. The jury retired for an hour and then delivered their verdict.
The court transcript reads:
Judge: What is your verdict?
Foreman of the Jury: We find the prisoner 'Not Guilty'.
Judge: What?
Foreman of the Jury: Not guilty.
Judge: I thank God, gentlemen, that the verdict is yours, not mine!
After his acquittal Redford headed into northern Australia where, by the 1880s, he was managing the famous Brunette Downs station.
As for Roma, well the verdict so outraged the legal establishment that it is effectively banned the town from holding "trials by jury" because it was felt that the locals could not be trusted to punish criminals they admired.
On 5 April, 1873 the governor of Queensland ordered that "the criminal jurisdiction of the District Court at Roma be withdrawn for two years".
A sculpture of the famous White Bull now stands on Gordon Street; the local sports centre is now named the Harry Redford Community and Sporting Centre; and each year the Harry Redford Cattle Drive starts in Aramac and makes its way down into South Australia.

Someone who raised you, forgets who you are, and you are left watching the person you love and admire slip away into a shell of lost memories.
All that is left is the hope that where ever their mind is resting now, it is somewhere that you can say "Remember me?" and they can reply "Always."

Memorial Day Ceremony is the annual event held to honor and pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces, "who gave their all."
The Tidewater Veterans Memorial stands in tribute to veterans of all wars and current military personnel. Six years under design and construction, it was completed in 1988 and has received awards for design and public art. The memorial is located on 19th Street across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The Veterans Memorial Park, dedicated to those service members who honorably served their country, is behind the memorial.

Chiefs captain creates scholarship in honour of Grant Sheridan
Myles Mattila is wearing the ‘C’ as the leader of the Kelowna Chiefs this year.
Off the ice, he’s been an exemplary leader in many facets of life for some time and he’s back at it again with a newly-created scholarship.
The Remembering Grant Sheridan Scholarship honours Grant Sheridan, the former owner of the Chiefs who passed away this summer, and it’ll be available to all KIJHL players.

It’s been created through the MindRight for Athletes Society, another creation of Mattila, and will recognize a player for their hockey commitment, community involvement and academic achievement.
The scholarship will be initiated during the Chiefs’ home opener at Rutland Arena on Friday night and more details about it will become available as the season goes on.
“It is with heavy hearts the Kelowna Chiefs will be playing our home opener in memory of Grant. There will not be a dry eye in the house,” says Mattila.
“Grant was a very special person who will be dearly missed by all. Grant and I had very similar fundamental beliefs in the core values of hockey, education, and community involvement, which included mental health.”
Sheridan presented Mattila with the team’s Scholastic Player of the Year award after the 2017-18 season.
My parents took me here when I was a little kid, but I was too young to remember. We had to pass through San Antonio on our way West, so I was eager to see the Alamo again as an adult and to take my own kids. (They weren't impressed, by the way.)
One interesting bit of information: This iconic structure was NOT where the actual combat took place. This was the church, and it was only a small part of the mission compound that the Texans died defending.

This is a photo of my husband's uncle Albert who was one of the lucky ones and came home after the war. The inscription is a copy from the back of the photo and is dated June 1943.
At this time of year, when we look to Eurovision with an Abraham-related sigh, what better way to spend a Thursday evening than in the company of pop greatness.
Spent this evening at the first West End Eurovision night- which featured the cast of 7 West End musicals, hence the late start of 11.30 (at my age on a schoolnight too!).
It was actually pretty good, a great warm-up for next week. My vote went to Mamma Mia's very Pans People-esque performance of "Ding-a-Dong", but the winners and crowd favourite was Wicked's "Ooh aah...".
Cheryl Baker was on the judging panel, along with Frances Ruffelle, who came cross as rather like Minnie Driver's character in Will & Grace, if that makes any sense...
Also the lady from Bardot, and the bloke behind Grease who was on the ITV show. Plus the whole theatre was full of cast and friends of the musicals involved... We could've been amongst West End Royalty. But it was really all about The Scooch for us.

has it really been six years? it feels like it was just the other day . . . and a lifetime ago.
on 9/11/01, i had just moved back to the u.s. from japan. i was still in a bit of a culture shock daze. i had just started a new job and remember everyone freaking out and crowding around their radios. i was stuck in a back room and couldn't really listen to much. i felt so anxious. it was also my brother's 21st birthday. my parents were driving down to bloomington to take him out for dinner & celebratory drinks. needless to say, it was a subdued evening. i remember going home after work and watching the news non-stop until chris came home. we were just in shock. and then the worry set in about friends who lived in the city. utlimately, the people i knew were okay, but there were so many others that weren't.
six years later and i am now a new yorker. i have never for a day doubted moving here. i absolutely love living in this city.
