In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The Virginia Beach Fraternal Order of Police hosts this annual memorial service as a tribute to all local law enforcement officers that have died in the line of duty in service to the City of Virginia Beach.
Reminder: Flags should be flown at half-staff on May 15th
This tribute to American law enforcement officers is part of the historic crime bill that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994. At the request of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Public Law 103-322 designates Peace Officers Memorial Day as one of only two days each year during which government agencies, businesses and residents are to fly their U.S. flags at half-staff.
“Just as we honor those who died in military service each Memorial Day, our nation pauses each May 15th to show its appreciation for the more than 20,000 men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy here at home,” said Craig W. Floyd, Memorial Fund Chairman and CEO. “Lowering flags to half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day is also a way to remember the family members, friends and colleagues these brave American heroes left behind.”

I am not a Roman Catholic but I did have great regard for this wonderful man. I know my drawing is a bit strange but it's my way of recognizing this loss.
What an incredible weight he carried and I think he did a job worth honoring.
I don't actually know when this post will get into cyber space, we are having yet another day of problems with internet service. The minute we have another choice we will be parting ways with our current problems.
In other news, I was feeling lousy until lunch time yesterday and then right after lunch I took a short nap and woke up feeling great and have felt great ever since, isn't that cool? Whatever it was it's gone now and I'm glad.
Update at 9 pm. - finally we are on line again, I've had it, it was over 24 hours that we were down!

Hundreds of young genocide survivors joined Busogo residents to remember families who were completely wiped during the Genocide against the Tutsi. The event took place in Busogo, in Rwanda’s north, and was organised by GAERG – a group of former students survivors of genocide who have completed their university studies.

A grave in the Ebenezer Cemetery. Thurnell Alston, whose story was told in Melissa Faye Greene's "Praying for Sheetrock", lies buried here as well. The cemetery is on a lonely road that leads from U.S. 17 across I-95 to the dump.
Kudos to students at Milton High School who commemorate 9/11 by placing one flag for every individual who lost their life in the quad in front of the school. Though most of the students have only a vague recollection of the events that transpired on this day and forever changed our world, their efforts are very much appreciated by the community - especially by those whose lives were directly impacted on this tragic day.
Shortly after taking this pic, while I chatted with a photog friend, an SUV pulled up. My friend recognized the woman waving from the front seat of the vehicle and the two were soon sharing a friendly hug, while several spilled out of the doors and gathered round and the woman's husband slowly walked over. Somewhere in the midst of this joy was also a deep sorrow, and the reason for the visit was soon shared: the husband had lost his sister, the woman her sister-in-law on 9/11. In memory of the loss, they named their beautiful and youngest daughter Margaret, after the sister.
Despite the fact that the events of 9/11/2001 took place nine years ago, it's hard not to remember and now to have met a man who lost his sister - in her 30's - serves as another reminder of the very real impact so many experienced on this day.

Beyond all the past, crinkled letters, the ephemeral pieces we kept, the tattered clothing, the worn, barren jewelry, will you remember me?
A necklace of small bits from the Victorian era in the most delicious rose gold. One piece, with the mother of pearl crescent with a rhinestone in the center must have been a small brooch. It however no longer has a backing. The second piece swivels (though there is nothing on the back) and also has mother of pearl on the front with a horseshoe and a rhinestone. The third piece is the most lovely--its a horseshoe shaped compass. The compass does work. On a brass chain with a lobster clasp.
The charms each measure about 1inches/2.5cms.
The chain measures 21.25inches/54cms. .

A 100 man guard From the Infantry School, along with Sailers, Firemen and Police paid honour to Canadas fallen soldiers at the 2006 rememberance Day ceremony in Fredericton.
Record crowds attended what was one of the warmest Rememberance Days in recent Memory.
