Mary's November Challenge Images. Two Gluebook pages.
Experimenting with using two different color versions of the same patterned background paper. I hope to make more variations soon.(Unfortunately it was not long enough for the pages. Had to piece it.)
It is not a very well known fact, but all the artists that made the bas-reliefs of Persepolis left their signature as shown with this "Y" carved behing the head of this median courtier decorating the northern stairway of the Tripylon. This is how we can see that they invented serial working long time before the industrial revolution, one artist generally carved a whole set of characters!
Remember when you actually walked out onto the tarmac and climbed up stairs into the plane? You even got to see what the plane looked like before boarding instead of being fed down a shoot into a big long tube with seats. It wasn't all that long ago. I took this shot of my wife boarding a DC-3 in Puerto Rico just a few years after we were married. Well, maybe it was all that long ago...

12.The Battle of Britain Memorial, Victoria Embankment, London
Created by sculptor Paul Day, and unveiled by Prince Charles in September 2005, this huge tribute to members of the Royal Air Force lists every allied pilot that flew in a sortie during the Battle of Britain, so includes the names of Canadians, Poles, Czechs, Australians and others alongside their British counterparts.
The sculptures and reliefs set into the monument depict all aspects of life on an RAF base during World War Two, from scrambling fighters all the way through to brewing a pot of tea in a quiet moment.

Robert Riis Ploger III was horn on December 19, 1941, in Ft. Lewis, Washington, to Major General Robert Riis Ploger, USA (ret.) and Marguerite Ploger. He died on September 11, 2001, aboard American Airline’s Flight 77, departing for his honeymoon with Zandra Cooper Ploger.

2013 is almost over, and we look back at the year that past.

My Dad is on the second camel from the right. I remeber seeing this picture when I was a little kid and being amazed that my Dad had actually seen the Pyramids. He was serving in Egypt as part of Patton's Army. Not long after this picture was taken he caught trench mouth and had all of his teeth pulled by an Army dentist in a lean-to tent. The temperature was 113 degrees Fahrenheit.
Kudos to students at Milton High School who commemorate 9/11 by placing one flag for every individual who lost their life in the quad in front of the school. Though most of the students have only a vague recollection of the events that transpired on this day and forever changed our world, their efforts are very much appreciated by the community - especially by those whose lives were directly impacted on this tragic day.
Shortly before taking this pic, while I chatted with a photog friend, an SUV pulled up. My friend recognized the woman waving from the front seat of the vehicle and the two were soon sharing a friendly hug, while several children spilled out of the doors and gathered round and the woman's husband slowly walked over. Somewhere in the midst of this joy was also a deep sorrow, and the reason for the visit was soon shared: the husband had lost his sister, the woman her sister-in-law on 9/11. They'd heard about the flags at Milton, but this was the first time they'd seen them in person. It was obvious the pain is still very real in their hearts. In memory of the loss, they named their beautiful and youngest daughter, Margaret, after the sister.
Despite the fact that the events of 9/11/2001 took place nine years ago, it's hard not to remember and now to have met a man who lost his sister - in her 30's - serves as another reminder of the very real impact so many experienced on this day.

Yes, I know this is a ridiculously teeny bonfire to be posting here today for bonfire night, but it's the only photograph in my archive with anything like a decent fire. It wasn't even November when this was taken, my records show it was March of 1974, so I guess it may have been a barbeque at the children's home where I worked at that time.
