Rememberance

// Vow Beneath the Moon \\

In the night lit by moonlight,

Your silhouette becomes a haze.

Deeper than words can convey,

Feelings transcend time and space.

Promises made under cherry blossoms,

Silently engraved in the heart.

Even when far apart,

Souls connected, love remains unchanged.

Every time I think of you,

Petals dance in the air.

Swearing an eternal love,

The moon watches over us, ever fair.

During the holiday season, nostalgic reminiscences usually include mounds of fluffy white snow.

All the best this year!

Happy Remember When Feathery Friday!

Back in late 2010, L75 had a Conrail painted SD50 for power for a week or so. Only managed one chase of it, but now the last one is heading to Altoona for rebuild and we are left with only the Conrail heritage GEVO. Progress!

.....That love weighs more than gold!

A king-sized dairy barn and silo built a century ago are showing their age as various parts begin to cave in through the effects of time and neglect. It is not difficult to imagine back to the days when a young farmer might have participated in building this barn and silo that took craftsmanship from many skilled hands. The awe and pride he and his wife enjoyed as they stepped back to admire them after they were built probably lasted years afterwards as this monument to their dreams could be seen from miles around.

In the 1950s when I began my teen-age adventures, the Japanese economic model became the envy of the world. Consumers rapidly adapted to the miniaturizing of many cheaper manufactured items including transistor radios. It was a world changing development as teenagers and adults no longer had to be near a stationary plugged-in source to hear the latest news, music or a sporting event.

But as with many “advancements” there came a price. For example, leisurely Sunday afternoons for a family at a park were no longer quiet times of solitude because wherever you turned you could hear the blaring of battery powered transistor radios, many of them tuned to different stations. In homes, normal family communications now competed with disembodied shrill voices and music from all over the country blasting from pocket-sized radios.

Coincidentally, the 1950s also marked the transition from building barns with character to gradually replacing the graceful deteriorating structures by generic looking pole barns that dominate farms to this day. The move to miniaturize products had been successfully accompanied by a movement to make products and structures utilitarian to save costs rather than to produce long lasting testimonies to craftsmanship and pride.

I may hold a minority opinion but I believe a nation loses part of its fabric of permanence and culture when everything we build and manufacture is measured solely on what it costs. One result of that emphasis today is it will be rare for a young person to grow up with a sense of connection to the land and a nostalgia for a pole barn.

However, I know countless older folks who when they view a barn like the one in the photo for a moment a flood of pleasant memories comes rushing back and creates a haunting emptiness for something that is no more.

The actor in this image represents a soldier who went to war and never came back, he was:

I remember our Nika, when she was so full of new life and the simple joy of a day in the sun.

My great-grandfather, Samuel Pickthorne, a seaman who died very young and far from home, is buried here, just beyond the trees, in Section 4 of the Hong Kong Colonial Cemetery.

We might never have known this, had my mother not - in her late 70's - discovered Internet and Genealogy, had she not happened upon the wonderful Johnsman Au, then Deputy Director of Audit in Hong Kong, who sweetly assisted her in her research, and who tragically died last fall.

As it was, we stood silent in this place, my husband and I, in March, respectful of chronology and connection and compassion...and two lives lost.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.

°° Words to the Picture °°

Up to 40cm of new snow fell all over Switzerland yesterday. On normal conditions, it’s a 20 minute drive home, but the time tripled with yesterday’s snowfall. When this happens, i always long for those warm summer days, to give me a warm feeling inside. Hope you get the same feeling too ..

Well, i’ll be going to the Philippines (again) on December 22, so i’ll be having that warm feeling not only inside, but outside too.
