The Warsaw Barbican (Polish: barbakan warszawski) is a barbican (semicircular fortified outpost) in Warsaw, Poland, and one of few remaining relics of the complex network of historic fortifications that once encircled Warsaw. Located between the Old and New Towns, it is a major tourist attraction.
The barbican was erected in 1540 in place of an older gate to protect Nowomiejska Street. It was designed by Jan Baptist the Venetian, an Italian Renaissance architect who lived and worked in the Mazowsze region of 16th century Poland and was instrumental in the redesign of the 14th-century city walls, which by that time had fallen into disrepair. The barbican had the form of a three-level semicircular bastion manned by fusiliers. It was 14 meters wide and 15 meters high from the bottom of the moat, which surrounded the city walls, and extended 30 meters from the external walls.
Almost immediately after its inception, the 4-tower barbican became an anachronism serving virtually no practical purpose. This was largely a result of the rapid advancement in artillery power. It was used in the defense of the city only once, during the Swedish invasion of Poland, on 30 June 1656, when it had to be recaptured by the Polish army of Polish king John II Casimir from the Swedes.
In the 18th century, the barbican was partially dismantled as its defensive value was negligible, and the city benefited more from a larger gate which facilitated movement of people and goods in and out of the city. In the 19th century, its remains were incorporated into newly built apartment buildings (kamienica). During the interwar period, in 1937–1938, Jan Zachwatowicz reconstructed part of the walls and the western part of the bridge, demolishing one of the newer buildings in the reconstruction process. However, a lack of funds delayed the barbican's planned complete reconstruction, and the 1939 invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany put the plans on hold.
During World War II, particularly the Siege of Warsaw (1939) and the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, the barbican was largely destroyed, as were most of the Old Town's buildings. It was rebuilt after the war, during 1952–1954, on the basis of 17th-century etchings, as the new government decided it would be cheaper to rebuild the barbican and the nearby city walls as a tourist attraction than to rebuild the tenements. In its reconstruction, bricks were used from historic buildings demolished in the cities of Nysa and Wrocław; most of the barbican was rebuilt, save for two exterior gates and the oldest tower on the side of the Old Town. It is currently a popular tourist attraction. (Wikipedia)
Captured this little one there with the last remaining bit of youth clinging on to her ... wondering if she will be returning soon.
Seems like they vanish for about 6 weeks here in summer, but starting to see a few make their way back.
NASA’s Juno mission to Jupiter, which has been in orbit around the gas giant since July 4, 2016, will remain in its current 53-day orbit for the remainder of the mission. This will allow Juno to accomplish its science goals, while avoiding the risk of a previously-planned engine firing that would have reduced the spacecraft’s orbital period to 14 days.
“Juno is healthy, its science instruments are fully operational, and the data and images we’ve received are nothing short of amazing,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “The decision to forego the burn is the right thing to do – preserving a valuable asset so that Juno can continue its exciting journey of discovery.”
Juno has successfully orbited Jupiter four times since arriving at the giant planet, with the most recent orbit completed on Feb. 2. Its next close flyby of Jupiter will be March 27.

AC-4 Continues to amaze. So the oldest and last remaining California Condor in the wild from the original 22 birds taken into captivity in the mid-1980s has another story to tell. He was released back into the wild after 30 years of captive breeding in 2015. The following year he fathered a wild chick born in the same area he was born in in Santa Barbara County almost 40 years ago. Well, earlier this year an untagged juvenile showed up that AC-4 was observed hanging out with. This would have been normal if it were not for the fact that shortly after AC-4 paired off with female #654 last year (and an egg was confirmed between them) #654 was assumed deceased after a loss of tracking signal. Condors split duty between father and mother incubating eggs and feeding newborn chicks. In order for this untagged juvenile to be the offspring of AC-4 that meant AC-4 would have had several weeks of incubating the egg and many months of supplying food to the youngster by himself. A task that was deemed impossible. And here's the "well". Well, DNA results are in ... AC-4 is the father. So what was thought impossible, was not impossible at all, at least not for AC-4. The fact that we have California Condors still here today is an accomplishment of not only the hard work of the dedicated biologists, handlers, Rangers, DNA experts, surgeons, veterinarians and hunters who have switched to non-lead ammunition ... but also because of the incredible will to survive and adapt of these birds. If you're in Ventura or Santa Barbara County and happen to see a Condor with an orange tag with the black numbers 20 on it, tip your hat, you're seeing something legends are made of. Way to go AC-4.
A number of ex-Magicbus Tridents have made their way south in recent months to see off the remaining Olympians, however their use will be short lived as they are not DDA complaint so will not survive beyond the end of December 2016. This explains why they have not been repainted into fleet livery.
Still carrying the rather attractive Magicbus livery, Stagecoach East Kent 17658 V158 DFT is seen turning off of Ashford Road and into Magpie Hall Road, Kingsnorth whilst working route 2A. Friday 8th July 2016.

Like all of the 917's at this years 74th Members Meeting, there is a fascinating history behind this eye catching purple and green liveried car.
Chassis 021 was one of the original 25 cars built for FIA homologation in April 1969. The car sat for 12 months unused until it was sold to Antti Aarnio Wihuri from Finland who was planning to run the 917K in the World Championship of Makes.
Antti Aarnio Wihuri used the proven Porsche 908 for the first part of 1970 at Daytona, Sebring and Brands Hatch. For the faster tracks of Monza and Spa the 917-021 was put to use. An accident at Monza meant the car finished 11th after driver Laine hit the barriers that required 2 further pit-stops. At a damp Spa the 917K was competitive and the fight was on for a fourth place finish until a pit stop cost the team time. They did finish in fifth place beating the Porsche works entries.
Laine was then tragically killed at the Nurburgring race, where the Porsche 908 he was driving took off and somersaulted, landing upside down and trapping Laine who perished in the flames.
As a result of this tragic accident, the team withdrew the remaining cars from the race. With one driver and the Porsche 917-021, the team took over the David Piper entry for Le Mans, meaning that Piper joined van Lennep in the driver lineup. Unfortunately the car was damaged beyond repair after suffering a puncture due to a bent chassis.
At this point, the car was rebuilt by stripping it down and putting the components onto chassis 012 that had been damaged at Daytona in 1969. Chassis 012 was renumbered 021 without the team being informed. The car was repainted in a white and yellow livery with red sills ready for the Interserie championship.
Van Lennep finished second behind Neuhaus driving the Gesipa entered 917 at the first race. At Hockenheim, the next round of the Interserie, 917-021 was raced in a new purple and green livery based on the paint scheme of the Le Mans 917LH Hippy car.
The car took its first victory in the Interserie round at Keimola, wearing the same psychedelic livery only now in yellow with red swirls. At Zandvoort, van Lennep won adding another success to 021 score sheet. The last round of the Interserie was held at Hockenheim and van Lennep finished 3rd in the race and 2nd overall in the 1970 Interserie series, taking the Porsche Cup prize.
The Porsche 917-021 was subsequently returned to Porsche and was stripped of its engine, wheels and suspension that were required to build the 917 spyder that went on to win the 1971 Interserie.
The chassis was then converted to road use by the German Joachim Grossmann, who had to find an engine, gearbox and suspension to return the car to an operational state. In 1977 chassis 021 became a white road registered car with licence plate CW-K-917.
In 1983, American Don Marsh bought the car and returned it back to its original specification. In 1999, 021 was repainted in the purple and green psychedelic livery. In 2004, a new Championship for Historic Sports Cars called the Classic Endurance Racing Series was created, reuniting many Group 5 cars with classic tracks from the period including Monza, Spa, Silverstone and the Nürburgring. Juan Barazi took ownership of 021 taking the car to 3 wins and a second place, winning the Championship. The car was last seen at the Goodwood Festival Of Speed in 2006 before being retired.
In 2008, Vincent Gaye bought 021 and performed a complete restoration of the car that took over 3 years to complete.

After the tornadoes in south central Nebraska that afternoon. Storms were still percolating and still severe enough to produce what I'm looking for... That wouldn't happen again that day... Oh the structure on those severe storms were truly photogenic. Some of the best Nebraska outflow boundaries of 2018 were in my viewfinder that day.
Though sick as a dog, I proceeded east and stayed ahead of these cells in case they produced again. These storm cells wouldn't give me any more Naders that afternoon, but it sure was fun to follow these remaining storm cells.

This round barn is one of only 10 remaining round barns in Washington State. The Steinke Round Barn was built in 1916 by Max Steinke and has 12 sides to the barn.
The round design with 60 foot high ceiling dome was built for housing draft horses that were used to work the fields until the mid 1930's when mechanized farm machinery replaced horse power.
The land this barn is situated on has been owned and farmed by the Dechenne family since 1935.
I've heard that the owners are generally friendly and have in the past allowed visitors on property.
However, the increasing pressure of photography tourism has soured the locals a bit, and many no-trespassing signs were evident in my many travels during my stay there.
Respecting the property, I remained on the main road and used a telephoto lens to capture this beautiful and historic barn.

As I was waiting for the UBHF to grind uphill out of Thurmont, nary a vehicle passed on Maryland Route 550.
As the sound of the EMDs grew louder, a few cars passed by but the road mostly remained empty.
Then as the lead SD40M-2 slowly ground into view, a solidary vehicle appeared and rolled right into the frame as I hammered down the shutter.
Hooray.
Next to old Simplex "Retrofriction" shifters, these remain my second favorite shifters of all time.
It was not easy finding a simple clamp-on downtube band to accept these Suntour Sprint (LD-4850) shift levers from the late 1980s - probably the last produced before all others were changed for Indexed shifting.
For various reasons, old bands from Campagnolo, Simplex, Shimano, Huret and even earlier Suntour's own "Power Shifter" bands (from the mid 1970s) would not work for these basic shift levers which were designed for simple brazed-on downtube bosses.
I finally opted for a modified Huret band offered by a seller on eBay. For $20 he was selling hand modified bands. These have the simple cylindrical shifter posts milled with flats on the ends like Campagnolo or Shimano braze-on bosses. The threads were also re-tapped to accept the now standard 5mm. mounting screws used on most any levers. The same seller had already sold nearly 100 of his modified bands so it would seem I'm not the only person now seeking bands for older bikes which had never come with brazed-on posts. The modifications work perfectly!
These Suntour shift levers were the basis from which Rivendell's shifters were re-manufactured by Dia-Compe (the final patent owner for this design), now branded for Rivendell as their "Silver" marque. The last generation of Suntour's "Power Shifters" (circa 1986) these offer a smooth action and a very light touch yet the ratchet cam will prevent the levers from slipping out of gear under pressure from the pull of the derailleur return springs. During the past 30 years, after indexed sifting was adopted by virtually all manufacturers, that no longer was an issue. But, slipping gears or excessively tight levers had always been an annoyance during earlier days when "pure friction-shifting" was the norm.
Despite the hardships of travel, Omar remained steadfast, driven not by worldly desires, but by his ever-present need to gird his loins. To Omar, this phrase was a metaphor for more than just preparation for battle—it was a reminder to fortify his spirit before every challenge, whether that meant physically tightening his belt or mentally steeling himself for what lay ahead. Each day, Omar would pause at dawn, adjusting his armor and reassuring Hamid that they were ready for whatever trials lay in their path.

Ranthambore National Park (Hindi: रणथंभौर राष्ट्रीय उद्यान ) or Ranthambhore is one of the largest national parks in northern India. It is situated in Sawai Madhopur district of southeastern Rajasthan, about 110 km northeast of Kota and 160 km southeast of Jaipur, which is also the nearest airport. The nearest town and railway station is at Sawai Madhopur, about 11 km away; Kota is another convenient station as all trains stop here. RIDCOR operates a mega highway between Kota and Ranthambhore.
Ranthambhore was established as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955 by the Government of India and was declared one of the Project Tiger reserves in 1973. Ranthambore became a national park in 1980. In 1984, the adjacent forests were declared the Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuary, and in 1991 the tiger reserve was enlarged to include the Sawai Man Singh and Keladevi sanctuaries.
Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary is known for its tigers and is one of the best places in India to see these majestic predators in the jungle. Tigers can be easily spotted even during the daytime. A good time to visit Ranthambore National Park is in November and May when the nature of the dry deciduous forests makes sightings common. Its deciduous forests were once a part of the magnificent jungles of Central India.
The park lies at the edge of a plateau and is bounded to the north by the Banas River and to the south by the Chambal River. There are several lakes in the park. It is named for the historic Ranthambhore fortress, which lies within the national park. The park covers an area of 392 km². It is known for its tiger population and is one of India's Project Tiger reserves. Other major wild animals include leopard, nilgai, wild boar, sambar, hyena, sloth bear and chital. It is home to wide variety of trees, plants, birds and reptiles. Ranthambore is the site of one of the largest banyan trees in India.
So much rain, but the water drops looked beautiful on the trees with some of the leaves remaining from last year's fall season.

With 10 days left in 2024 I will be posting my favorite photo from March. March takes us over Raton Pass and into remote New Mexico to see the blade fall over the Amtrak Southwest Chief at West Levy. Wheeler Walz and I made an impromptu trip to see the few remaining Santa Fe century old semaphore signals before they inevitably fall for good.
