An aggressive Sharp-tailed Grouse chases a Greater Sage-grouse across the Ecotour Road in Grasslands National Park.
The story: The Greater Sage-grouse is endangered in Canada, where only remnant populations remain in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. I had not seen one for four or five years. In early December, I slowed my car for a large group of sharpies along the main park road, and noticed one that was much larger... could it be a Sage-grouse? Yes indeed!
I stopped. Some of the sharpies flew, while the remainder ran off to the snowy margins. But the Sage-grouse remained. Wow, what luck! I shot from the car, despite the slightly downward angle, but realized that this would produce only second rate images, so eventually I opened the driver side door and slipped out. Lying flat in the middle of the road - winter traffic in this park is rare - I had a better POV, and my chubby little subject seemed accept me. In fact, it was moving toward me along the road margin.
Then, along came a sharpie that seemed to think this park wasn't big enough for both of them. Although much smaller, it chased the Sage-grouse in a sudden, aggressive rush. Moments later they both settled down, and I kept shooting. But it made me wonder if timidity or lack of aggression is one of the biological factors that place this species at risk. Apparently US populations are doing much better than those north of the 49th parallel, but there are concerns. It's a long story. Here, park managers restrict access to their leks or dancing grounds in the spring, to reduce pressures in the hope that they can rebound in a protected place, but it may be too little, too late.

Sadly it is difficult becoming to find scenes like this in the Five Points neighborhood of Denver, which is basically the north end of downtown. So much seems to have been, or is being ripped down and replaced by expensive, large contemporary style condo and apartment buildings.

"Figbirds are part of a worldwide family that includes the orioles, of which Australia has two other members (the Yellow and Olive-backed Orioles). Males have bare, red skin around the eye, contrasting against a black crown and grey neck and throat. The remainder of the body is olive-green, except for a white under-tail area. Females have grey skin around the eye and lack distinctive head markings.
The Figbird lives in rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests, but is often found in urban parks and gardens, particularly those with figs and other fruit-producing trees."
While most people were out enjoying the remainder of their holiday weekend, railroads still needing to move traffic. With 3 SD40-2s howling in dynamic braking, the train crosses the Newaygo River Bridge in downtown Newaygo. In just a short ways the brakes will be knocked off and the engineer will begin the hard pull up the steep Newaygo hill. River-goers enjoy the nice warm July afternoon while the train crew still has a ways to go down to Turner St. where they will tie down for the next crew.

From his time working as a distillery tour guide, Brian knows that in order to fully appreciate a fine whisky, one must carefully consider not just its flavour, but its aroma, generally referred to as the nose. A tulip-style glass is ideal for this purpose - the shape channels the aromas upward where they are trapped by the narrow neck. Swirling the glass gently helps to release the aromas and you can get your nose right into the glass and savour the various 'notes' of the whisky, such as fruity, floral, spicy and smoky. Every whisky will have a characteristic nose that is a complex combination of all its various notes.
For Macro Mondays theme 'Smell'.
Snails have a keen sense of smell due to olfactory sense cells concentrated around the mouth and lower tentacles, but olfactory sense cells are also dispersed throughout the remainder of the body surface. Snails are able to find food (and whisky) at a considerable distance without being able to see it.
No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph and at no time was the snail allowed to come into contact with the whisky.
- Keefer Lake, Ontario, Canada -
A little something just to prove that winter has arrived at Keefer Lake. It was late in coming this year and it has been quite mild to-date (I should note that mild is a relative term - it's -31C right now and with the wind chill factored in it's -39C.) I hope I am not tempting Mother Nature to 'even things up' for the remainder of winter. We had a very severe winter last year so I think it's only fair to have a gentle one in compensation.

Shot for Saturday Self Challenge 24/10/2020 ---Texture
Well this week's challenge ended up a bit tricky with three possible shots but none I was entirely happy with , from a tin mine model of mine captured in macro and placed over an existing engine house of the same proportions in it's surroundings , a macro into a geode and a flint wall .
However , a morning out to Bushy Park where I took a shot of a tree the previous week and a tool closer capture of it with texture in mind , but still not good enough for what I was after .
And then !! Saw one of the famous free roaming deer of the Park who obliged with shots through the ferns and then when I was a bit closer the deer then just sat down to take things easy and this shot was on the card . Fading Ferns , Fur & Antlers - and there were three different textures in one shot !!
Bushy Park in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is the second largest of London's Royal Parks, at 445 hectares (1,100 acres) in area, after Richmond Park. The park, most of which is open to the public, is immediately north of Hampton Court Palace and Hampton Court Park and is a few minutes' walk from the west side of Kingston Bridge. It is surrounded by Teddington, Hampton, Hampton Hill and Hampton Wick and is mainly within the post towns of Hampton and Teddington, those of East Molesey and Kingston upon Thames taking the remainder.

The pied stilt (Himantopus leucocephalus), also known as the white-headed stilt, is a shorebird in the family Recurvirostridae. It is widely distributed with a large total population size and apparently stable population trend, occurring in Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines, Brunei, Christmas Island, Indonesia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It is sometimes considered a subspecies of the black-winged stilt (H. himantopus). The pied stilt grows to a length of about 36 cm with a wingspan of about 67 cm. The back of the head and neck, the back and the upper surfaces of the wings are glossy greenish-black. The undersides of the wings are plain black and the remainder of the plumage is white, apart from the tail feathers which are tinged with grey. The long, thin legs are pink and the toes have black claws. The long slender beak is black and the irises and the eyelids are red. The pied stilt is resident in southern Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and most of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. There are non-breeding populations in Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Brunei, Palau, South Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, East Timor and New Guinea. This bird is a vagrant to Japan and Christmas Island. The pied stilt is a waterbird and feeds in shallow water, probing into the sediment with its beak. It is gregarious, and in New Zealand sometimes forms mixed flocks with the black stilt (Himantopus novaezelandiae). It feeds largely on aquatic insects and on small molluscs. It emits a repeated yelping cry as it flies, and the legs trail behind it, tending to sway from side-to-side. 15834
I started this guy a while back when the SDCC trailer came out, and I think he turned out great.
Parts of the hair, his Eye of Aggamotto, and the little pendant od hisbelt were all made with Procreate.
The cloak, robes, and the chain and tassel on the belt were made from various Lego capes and skirts.
The wrist things, and remainder of the belt is electrical tape.
The hair was inspired by Sean's awesome Strange figure.

The crypt of San AntolÃn, located under the current cathedral of Palencia (Spain), is the only remainder of the primitive Visigothic cathedral built in the second half of the 7th century, later Romanesque elements were added. The crypt is dedicated to Saint Antolin, martyr, patron of Palencia. His remains are preserved in this place to which he has given his name.
In the site where the crypt and the Cathedral of Palencia are now, a temple of pagan worship existed in antiquity to which, according to historians Juan Agapito y Revilla, Francisco Simón Nieto and others, a paleo-Christian one from Roman times would have happened. which seems to agree with the Roman footprints existing outside, at the same level. In front of the pre-Romanesque temple is the old Visigothic chapel from the mid-7th century, built during the reign of Wamba to preserve the remains of the martyr Saint Antolin (Antonin de Pamiers), a Gallo-Visigothic nobleman brought from Narbonne to Hispania in 672 or 673 by Wamba himself. These are the only remains of the Visigoth cathedral in Palencia1. Thus, the oldest vestige of worship that is preserved today is the bottom of the crypt, a building dating from the mid-7th century. The remains of Antolin, a Gallo-Visigothic nobleman, saint and martyr, would have arrived in the procession of King Wamba from Narbonne in the year 673. Would Wamba himself order the construction of the burial? Some historians investigate to answer this question.
An off-center arch connects the Visigothic underground space with the Romanesque extension, leading to the center of the apse. For some authors, such as Helmut Schlunk, the Crypt is the martyrium (Latin word that means martyrdom and also burial of the martyr). Therefore it is believed that it is the place that keeps the relics of San AntolÃn, but other historians doubt it.
Imber is an uninhabited village in a remote part of the British Army’s main trining ground – Salisbury Plain.
Historically, the village was always one of the most isolated settlements in the county – at its peak, there were 450 inhabitants in the mid 19th century – but by 1940, this had declined to circa 150 when the Ministry of Defence purchased the land on which it stood.
In 1943, the MoD informed the villagers they would all need to leave within 50 days as the village was to be used for training troops in street fighting as part of the preparation for D-Day.
The promise to allow them to return after the war was never met, and today, the village remains closed to the public except for just a few days each year and continues to be used for urban warfare training.
A small number of the original budlings remain – the pub, manor house and a handful of farm buildings – the remainder were demolished by the army, replacing them instead with purpose-built constructions more suitable for military training.
Kincraig Bridge, is a Late 19th century, 8-span plate girder wooden bridge; 2 rubble piers, remainder of solid wood with iron cutwaters; simple post and rail parapet. Rubble abutments.
Kincraig Bridge is a very simple timber and steel structure spanning the River Spey at Kincraig. Its historic name of Boat of Insh suggests that the bridge replaced a long established ferry-boat service at the same spot.

Another dust-up of winter left a few more inches of snow to greet us this morning, but with temps in the 60s forecast for the weekend it will quickly become history, providing a bit of moisture for the long-awaited commencement of spring. April showers of a different ilk...
Quite a gusty day, and pilot John Romain had to make some sharp manoeuvres to bring his Spitfire safely home.
This reconnaissance aircraft is Spitfire PR.Mk XI PL983, built in 1944 and spent the remainder of the war taking aerial photographs over Europe. The black and white stripes commemorate those applied to all Allied aircraft just before D-Day to help reduce 'friendly fire' incidents. Although they are painted very neatly on this Spitfire, in many cases in 1944, they were hastily applied with a standard issue RAF broom....
I was very happy to capture the full 'prop circle' as this plane came into land.
Taken shortly after arrival. The sun then rapidly disappeared with the remainder of the morning grey and fully overcast.

One of the very few remaining buildings in this once thriving gold mining town found up a dry and dusty gravel road near Tonapah. There appear to be a couple of occupied houses, one of which sported MAGA signs. We didn't stay long.
The Giant's Causeway (Irish: Clochán an Aifir) is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills.
It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 and a national nature reserve by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland in 1987. In a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Giant's Causeway was named the fourth-greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom.
The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although some have four, five, seven, or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places.
Much of the Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site is owned and managed by the National Trust. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland, receiving over 998,000 visitors in 2019. Access to the Giant's Causeway is free of charge: it is not necessary to go via the visitor centre, which charges a fee. The remainder of the site is owned by the Crown Estate and several private landowners. Wikipedia
The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Wilfrid, commonly known as Ripon Cathedral, and until 1836 known as Ripon Minster, is a cathedral in Ripon, North Yorkshire, England. Founded as a monastery by monks of the Irish tradition in the 660s, it was refounded as a Benedictine monastery by St Wilfrid in 672. The church became collegiate in the tenth century, and acted as a mother church within the large Diocese of York for the remainder of the Middle Ages. The present church is the fourth, and was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. In 1836 the church became the cathedral for the Diocese of Ripon. In 2014 the Diocese was incorporated into the new Diocese of Leeds, and the church became one of three co-equal cathedrals of the Bishop of Leeds.
The cathedral is notable architecturally for its gothic west front in the Early English style, considered one of the best of its type, as well as the Geometric east window. The seventh-century crypt of Wilfrid's church is a significant example of early Christian architecture in England. The cathedral has Grade I listed building status. Wikipedia
