Indian food edition! Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Love That Fiesta is just a big bunch of enablers! Ever since I saw someone with these cute little trays, I've been lusting after them.

I have always enjoyed collecting these little trays. The Fiesta relish trays compliment place settings, which I use to serve condiments for Mexican food like limes, cilantro, chopped onion or jalapeno.

 

Not to be confused with the greatly more ambitious vintage relish trays.

Heinz Vinegar Pickled Eggs - Ah, the lost art of making pickled eggs. Like pipe cleaner crafts and public hangings, some things should be allowed to die out.

Assembling a vintage Fiesta relish tray can be a lot of fun for the collector. These remarkable trays were produced for eleven years by Homer Laughlin. The most desirable colors are red and blue.

Nuts, coconut, candied fruit.... is that chutney?

Among other things, she had the relish tray with the original inserts in mint condition. Her mother, way back in the day, bought it brand new.

For the Mad Men party, I brought a dish that met two criteria: simplicity and WASPy-ness. Hence, the relish tray.

 

I picked the brains of my mom and aunt, who said that some items were essential: different types of olives, little pickles, and radish roses. I added small chicken salad sandwiches (cut into triangles) on pumpernickel bread, held together with toothpicks and a green olive. I also added pimento cheese spread (which is the least Jewish or otherwise ethnic thing I can imagine) and melba toast (Betty's only source of nutrients besides pineapple during her pregnancy, apparently).

 

I couldn't find pickled watermelon rind, however, which my Aunt Ann says would have been the piece de resistance for the relish tray.

 

I got way too drunk on gin gimlets to take pictures myself, though, so I have to rely on Jadrian's photo, taken after most of the food had been devoured, for visual evidence of my contribution to the party. It looked so pretty at first, though.

We always had a relish tray for Thanksgiving growing up. This big antipasto tray works great for showcasing a variety of olives, pickled vegetables, vegetables and more. Read Sarah's Cucina Bella.

My Midwestern boss at EDF is getting married this weekend. I made a relish tray for the celebration in honor of her Kansas heritage.

If you're going to be crazy, YOU HAD BETTER DO IT RIGHT!

Kosher dill center, black olive 3 o'clock; green olive 6 o'clock; pickled carrots (family recipe) 9 o'clock; sweet gherkins 12 o'clock.
