this was palma during semana santa. not the polished view from postcards, but the moments in between – when the procession pauses, when a glance escapes the robe, when the mask slips just a bit. behind every tradition are people, gestures, breath. i wandered, asked, waited. sometimes they noticed, sometimes they didn’t. but i felt the weight of ritual brushing against the mundane.

Unveiling and Blessing of Statue of Welcoming Christ by Father Lucas Ng

The Welcoming Christ Statue initial idea was in the original architect's design of the Costantini Centre which was built in 2012 at St. Ignatius Church, but it was never executed due to budget constrain. Under refurbishment project undertaken by SIC Building Committee in 2013, the idea of the Welcoming Christ statue was revisited.

The design inspiration came from the bronze statue of Christ in Mount Teide, Tenerife, Spain. The marble statue was sculptured by Wu Shi Qing, Cui Yun Guang and Wang Ling Mei from Linyi Joy Garden Co, Ltd., Shandong Province, China.

The sculpture was first modelled with clay (1.1 meters tall, 1:4 ratio), and many revisions were made to the facial expression and other details before being replicated on 5 solid blocks of Beijing Masa white Marble from Beijing. It took approximately 8 months from clay model design to completion of the marble carving.

The entire statue measures 4.52 meters tall, 3.76 meters wide and weighs 11.8 tons. The statue is made up of 5 separate parts; pedestral, mid, top and two palms.

The backdrop of the statue is locally fabricated with a polystyrene foam core and finished with plaster and glass mosaic tiles.

To illuminate the statue, the latest LED lighting system with the flexible to change the colors according to the liturgical colors were installed.

in the dim stillness of la misericòrdia in palma, where the grand processions of semana santa begin their solemn march, i stood quietly in the corner. the scent of incense clung to the air. a hooded figure, faceless and serene, emerged from the shadows, clutching a towering cross adorned in gold. this wasn’t just ritual – it was reverence in motion. tradition whispered through every fold of his robe, through every echoing footstep in the courtyard. i didn’t ask for permission. i witnessed. i remembered.
