Inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. Candid image looking down on a religious man inside the Church during a service.
The Church is considered extremely holy in Christianity being both the site where Jesus was crucified, and the location of Jesus's tomb.
Excerpt from Wikipedia:
The first religious building on the site of the present church was a Roman monument, perhaps a temple of Attis, whose worship was probably the cause of the Christian persecution in Lyon from 177. In the 5th century, according to tradition, Eucherius of Lyon, 19th bishop of Lyon, built on the ruins of the building a basilica to contain the relics of the martyrs in Lyon, tortured in 177. The church received the name "Church of Holy Apostles". In the 6th century, the bishops were buried in the church, particularly Nicetius of Lyon, the 28th bishop. The body of the latter attracted a crowd and his presumed great miracles led the church to take his name.
The church is mainly built in the Gothic style with a Renaissance portal. Among its particularities are:
A crypt.
Several side chapels.
The tomb of Pauline-Marie Jaricot.
Mosaics by Gaspard Poncet, representing the Virgin Mary and the 48 martyrs of Lyon.
A statue of the Virgin made by Antoine Coysevox.
A neogothic pulpit made after a design by Benoît.
The stale of the chapter of canons.
Stained glasses by Bégule, Gruber and Lavergne.
A 17th-century clock.
A plaque about the marriage of Frederic Ozanam.

Originally, the home for the Hieronymite religious order, was built by the Infante Henry the Navigator around 1459.The chapel that existed there, to the invocation of Santa Maria de Belém, was serviced by monks of the military-religious Order of Christ who provided assistance to pilgrims who transited the area. The small beach of Praia do Restelo was an advantage spot, with safe anchorage and protection from the winds, sought after by the ships that entered the Tagus. The Hermitage of Restelo (Portuguese: Ermida do Restelo), as it was known, was already a hermitage in disrepair, when Vasco da Gama and his men spent the night in prayer before departing on their expedition to the Orient in 1497.
The existing structure was started on the orders of Manuel I (1469–1521) at the courts of Montemor-o-Velho in 1495, as a final resting-place for members of the House of Aviz, in his belief that an Iberian dynastic kingdom would rule after his death. In 1496, King Manuel petitioned the Holy See for permission to construct a monastery at the entrance of Lisbon, along the margins of the Tagus River. It was after the arrival of Vasco da Gama, a year later, bringing with him samples of gold he discovered, that the monastery became a representation of Portuguese expansionism, and that the church became a house of prayer for seamen leaving or entering port.

rolled fondant covered first communion cake with crucifix topper. This has to be my favorite color palette of all times and I do love to do religious cakes though I am not very religious myself. ???
OK, all you viewers out there...WHO is looking at this cake? It is averaging 40 hits a day - more in one day than some of my other posts have in the entire time they've been up. Please comment - I'd love to know why this post is so popular. Thank you!
