Why look far when everything good is so near ?
It starts now with the second Corona wave. Not only, but also, the desire to travel is responsible for this. Can't one give up travelling for a year? Everywhere in everyone's surroundings there are wonderful excursion destinations.

Missing trees badly today, so here is another shot from my favourite sunrise spot on the outskirts of the mega city. Sugar palm trees lining rice fields in Pathum Thani province just north of Bangkok.

..ohne Reisefrust !
Fast keine Wartezeiten,
Wishing you all a happy festive season!!!
New beginning 5:44 am. Magic sunrise in Pathum Thani just north of Bangkok. Sugar palm trees lining the rice fields are reflected in the flooded fields, ready for the new crop to grow.

The Taj at sunrise seen through the Iwan main portal of Kau Ban mosque. The mosque provides the place of worship near the mausoleum the Taj is, as required according to Islamic law. Built in red sandstone with white marble inlay it is a spectacularly beautiful building in it's own right, enhancing the splendour of the Taj Mahal complex.

Sunset afterglow surrounding Wat Arun, the 'Temple of Dawn', on the bank of Chao Phraya river.
Single exposure 0.6 sec. Classic iconic view of Bangkok, on a colourful evening way back in 2013. The skyline in the background will have changed a bit by now, and the temple looks different (in close up detail view) too after multi year restorations. Back then i had a drink in the roof bar and a tripod was ok :)

Along the mighty Mekong river in Stung Treng, northern Cambodia. He and his 2 friends on similar vehicles were driving up and down the whole length of the Mekong in Cambodia, up on one side, down on the other, selling and stocking up as they go.
Their ingenuity and perseverance is really impressive, in a country with very few opportunities.
I had met his companions the day prior, an hour or two down river in Kratie. Here is a shot of his friend on a similar bike. The following day shooting along the river front in Stung Treng at sunset time they suddenly appeared. No time to adjust settings i just shot; this one here on iso6400 and a bit too slow at 1/125. My first trial of Adobe's newish AI supported noise reduction tool and the results are much better than what i managed at a previous attempt :)

Monks sweeping in front of Bayon temple's Southern side just after sunrise. A nostalgic post, shot in 2010 on a modest Nikon D300, but sadly the digital beginner that i was back then used iso 800 hence it's noisy and soft, but i rather like the timing and composition ... and what a moment :)
Here is also a slightly different composition from just a minute later that i published previously.

If you follow me you will know by now that i love reflections and trees (who does not?), not bad for a 2 minute stop along the road ;)

Not a bad lookout at sunset time i'suppose.

Fishing on the Mekong river near Strung Treng in northern Cambodia. Love these skies in rainy season :)
Here is also a slightly earlier shot of a different boat published previously.

Wooden longtail boat resting on a white shell beach somewhere in the Phi Phi archipelago in Krabi province, Thailand. These are my summer holiday happy colours in the Andaman Sea. Here is also a horizontal frame shot some 20 minutes earlier, that I published previously.

The moment when the setting sun meets the horizon, seemingly melting into the Andaman sea. A special evening on Phuket island, with longtail boats out fishing off shore.
Technically not perfect, i wish it was a bit sharper and lost a slightly more "melting" shot a few seconds later due to blur, but i am lucky to get some useable frames thanks to VR lens, all handheld @300mm on ISO 100 and 1/200 or 1/320 speed :)

In a mangrove forest, where at high tide the salt water from the Andaman Sea and the fresh water from the mountain forests mix in a small stream, a little biodiversity hotspot in the jungle - and a refreshing visual spectacle.

Dream beach somewhere in the Phi Phi archipelago.
A couple swimming next to a longtail boat anchored in the coral waters of a secluded bay, surrounded by overgrown limestone cliffs. i love the vibrant turquoise and greens of sea and vegetation in the intense tropical light. Fantastic day trip :)

Fishermen joking and relaxing after a day's work on the banks of the Mekong river, Luang Prabang, Laos.
I visited in 2009 as part of my ongoing journey 'along the Mekong' in stages; this section starting from the golden triangle in the north to Luang Prabang during the Buddhist new year in April (more pics to follow).
One thing I had been told before travelling was that Laos people are friendly and very relaxed. VERY relaxed. And true to that I experienced only kind and gentle hospitality (and occasionally a little curiosity), but whatever they were doing working or else they certainly always were ready to stop for a laugh and joke.

The sun setting in a giant orange fire ball behind skyscrapers in Wong Wian Yai district. In this particular view here the recently completed new giant Buddha really makes this a superb vista.
What a fantastic crazy place this is. This time of year the rising heat and pollution help to create spectacular sunsets, hence i've been busy chasing the sun around town over the last 2 weeks or so .... more pics to follow shortly :)

Sublime beauty just after sunrise on a fresh misty December day. The mountains of Loei province, looking roughly in a Southwestern direction from Chiang Khan, a small historic trading town on the Mekong river, the border between Laos and Thailand.

Mushroom rocks in Pha Thaem National Park along the Mekong river in Ubon Ratchathani province. A fascinating natural and cultural landscape, inhabited since prehistoric times with cave paintings nearby.

A day like a dream, looking from Koh Chang island towards the main land in the distance. The sea was calm at high tide and reflects the sky like a mirror with just a few gentle ripples near the shore.

another shot from one of my favourite places, the 'Two Water' mangrove forest in Krabi.
Quite a unique little biosphere, where at high tide saltwater from the Andaman Sea and fresh water from the mountain forests mix in a small stream. The constant exchange of nutrients combined with shelter from the mangrove trees create an ideal nursery for everything that thrives in this climate. An incredibly rich little biodiversity hotspot, besides providing a visual spectacle.
Please feel free to check my Thailand album for some other views from this same place published previously, e.g. a close up of a tree reflected and one of the magnificent palms that grow in the surrounding wetlands.

This place in the heart of Chinatown served a variety of curries on rice, inexpensive and fast, seating provided along the small road, with free drinking water, local news and advertisements. Sadly the place is no more, the street kitchen moved, the house with the nice wall has been restored and the corner now looks modern and clean, a bit generic and lifeless like the new 7/11 and Starbucks that opened around the opposite corner.
Change and gentrification have gathered pace the last few years with the arrival of the MRT underground line. Street food will always be available in Chinatown, but somehow the charme of old and something "authentic" and unique becomes harder to find. Their curries were nice and where else do you get yummy food on pink UFO shaped plates for a bit more than $1 drink included?
It was not easy to get a good shot across the busy little road, this here probably the best moment I got. But 1/60 at iso3600 make it a bit too soft. On the other hand i quite like how the slow shutter retains a feeling of the dynamic and movements :)
How do you think?

On one of the myriad little arms and canals in the Mekong delta, Can Tho, southern Vietnam. A little busy floating market early morning on a grey rainy day along the tree-lined gardens and paddies. Normal life here ;)
I love how the boats advertise their main fare like the water melon family in the foreground with a fruit on the pole visible from further away; a smaller pineapple trader and cooked food vendors chatting and laughing in the background and others just passing through on their morning errands and trade.

A ferry connecting a permanently inhabited island in the river near the small provincial capital Kratie.
Mekong skies are fabulous. Here towards the end of dry season a wall of clouds is building over the mighty river, culminating in short but fierce thunderstorms later afternoon; an early sign of the changing monsoon and rainy season to come.

2.5 sec. long exposure in blue hour looking down onto Sathon district. This shot is from 2015, about a year prior the inauguration of the then tallest skyscraper Mahanakhon in the distance on the right. Back then is was still under construction with a crane on the top.
Here is also another scene from this windy spot high up, a zoom view on the highway curving into the distance on the left.

Traffic in Wong Wian Yai in the west of Bangkok just before sunset. The air quality is very bad at present, but at least the pollution contributes to spectacular light and colour. That's one reason why i've been busy chasing the sun around town the last 2 weeks or so .... more pics to follow shortly :)

Early morning in front of the royal palace. The low sun was blasting already at 7:30. You can tell as both monks are covering their head for shadow, one with his robe and the other using a booklet in his hand. And I still remember dripping under my hat even 10 years later. But besides the beautiful architecture I liked the many pigeons on the beautiful (Thai inspired) roof and had to wait in this precise spot without shadow for some time to catch a good moment. Hope you like it and it was worth the wait :)

Along the Mekong, Luang Prabang 2009. A Fisherman at work with a scoop net mounted on a fork of 2 approx 4m long bamboo handles. I came across this scene just after sunrise, so he will have been working in the river since dawn.
Handling the net alone is impressive enough, but also how he was navigating the river, moving forth and back into deeper areas at times. You can tell from the surface the Mekong was a proper, wild and untamed river back then. There are turbulences and currents, rocks and pools and the river gets real deep in certain areas. And the river is/was rich in fish and other creatures (both real and imagined!), an ecosystem second in biodiversity only to the Amazon.
But a scene like this may be a thing of the past now. From what I read a dam built further downstream in the last years has led to an increase of water levels of around 2m in Luang Prabang. Life in and along the river has changed. I don't know if fishing like this is still happening in the UNESCO World Heritage town, just a few meters down the embankment from the historic temples.
Shot on a modest quality (by today's standards anyway) Nikon D300 and iso 800. On the other hand it was raining that morning, so the noise is partly natural :)

Wild surf in monsoon season in mid July 2012, a few million light years ago it feels. Looking south along the shore, the blue mountains in the distance are on Phuket island. Not easy to see in smallish size, but the areas of sand above the surf are full of quite large crabs.

The wonderful, incomparable Taj from the back across the river Yamuna, the last sunlight warming the top of the domes and towers. You will have read all the superlatives about sophisticated architecture and crafts and the romantic interesting history, but in reality it is far far more beautiful than anything you hear or an image can convey. The side buildings in red sandstone, a guest house on the left and a mosque on the right, are no less impressive.
I actually had in mind to get closer, hoping for some people working along the river or perhaps try a shot with a reflection, but a small company of Indian soldiers guarded the point from where I shot and they were not shy to posture with their machine pistols to prevent people from exploring the area.
