(Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) Svalbard reindeer are wild animals, not herded. I think they look very cute! I liked the setting of this small group who had managed to find the only bit of ground not covered in snow in the whole area of the fjord that I could see!
We did manage to see several herds of reindeer while travelling through northern Norway - - this pic is a roadside Reindeer near the village of Honningsvag, Norway.

Reindeer, called caribou in North America , species of deer found in the Arctic tundra and adjacent boreal forests of Greenland, Scandinavia, Russia, Alaska, and Canada.
Reindeer have been domesticated in Europe.
There are two varieties, or ecotypes: tundra reindeer migrate between tundra and forest in huge herds numbering up to half a million in an annual cycle covering as much as 5,000 km (3,000 miles) and forest reindeer are much less numerous.
"Once upon a time, the Reindeer took a running leap and jumped over the Northern Lights. But he jumped too low, and the long fur of his beautiful flowing tail got singed by the rainbow fires of the aurora. To this day the reindeer has no tail to speak of. But he is too busy pulling the Important Sleigh to notice what is lost. And he certainly doesn’t complain. What's your excuse?"

After a year’s absence because of COVID the parade of light in our small city finally returned. Little by little, normalcy seems to be returning. Such a wonderful feeling.
Svalbard, Norway
From Wikipedia:
"The Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) is a small subspecies or species of reindeer found on the Svalbard archipelago of Norway. Males average 65–90 kg (143–198 lb) in weight, females 53–70 kg (117–154 lb), while for other reindeer generally body mass is 159–182 kg (351–401 lb) for males and 80–120 kg (180–260 lb) for females
The species is endemic to the islands of Svalbard, where it has lived for at least 5,000 years and has become well adapted to the harsh climate, being found on nearly all non-glaciated areas of the archipelago. By 1925 they had almost gone extinct due to over-hunting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over recent decades, their population has increased. As of 2019, the total population across the archipelago is approximately 22,000. They are the only large grazing mammal in the European High Arctic, and this makes them exceptional for studies concerning the introduction of pollutants to changing ecosystems. During the short Arctic summer, Svalbard reindeer feed on a lush tundra vegetation of vascular plants, including grasses, herbs, sedges and deciduous shrubs in the lowland plains and valleys, to accumulate fat for the winter. The fur of Svalbard reindeer contains elements and chemicals picked up from the vegetation they digest. They are relatively sedentary, and are thus highly vulnerable to changes in local conditions.
Compared to other reindeer, they are short-legged and have a small, rounded head. Their fur is also lighter in color and thicker during winter. The thickness of the coat contributes to the short-legged appearance and makes even starved animals appear fat in the winter. The males develop large antlers during the period from April to July and shed the velvet during August–September. Males lose their antlers in early winter. Females develop antlers starting in June and they are usually retained for a whole year. "

Reindeer are magical animals. During my stay in Sweden I was lucky enough to shoot some portraits of them. To celebrate Christmas I decided to share my favorites pictures.
This one is a portrait of the bigest Reindeer I have never seen...
Taken Cairngorm National Park, Scottish Highlands. The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd is Britain’s only free-ranging herd of reindeer found in the Cairngorm mountains in Scotland. There are about 150 within the herd that roams freely over a vast area.
Seasons greetings to all friends and contacts on Flickr, thank you for all the comments on my photography. I am always so inspired by the amazing wildlife images I have seen throughout the past year and look forward to 2025
check out this amazing sim with soft touches of white. silver and beiges pops of Christmas colors red and green throughout, hints of flakes of gold. perfect for any friends or family photography needs,
With love and blessings to all at Yule.
Since early Neolithic times, the female reindeer has been worshipped in the North. Unique to other deer species in that female Reindeer grow antlers, they were considered to be the “Life-Giving Mother” the leader of the herds, depended on for survival, milk, food, clothing & shelter.
Across the North, these attributes are part of the mythology and spirituality of the shamanistic peoples who tell a story of how at the winter solstice the Deer Mother Goddess flew through the sky in order to help the dying midwinter sun find its way back and begin the process of the returning light.
All throughout Europe, she was revered as the spiritual figure of Winter Solstice & Yuletide. The symbol of fertility, motherhood, regeneration & rebirth of the Sun, her antlers depicted as the tree of life carrying birds, the Sun, Moon & stars.
If you'd like to know more about the Northern European shamanic Winter Solstice traditions surrounding the Deer Mother and her flying Reindeer (hmmm...sound familiar?) this article is a good introduction: jocelynmercado.com/blog/deer-mother-winter-solstice
This magnificently antlered reindeer (rangifer tarandus) was roaming the tundra in the Tromso area of Norway. Both genders grow antlers but, as is the case here, male's tend to grow larger sets of antlers. This species is known as caribou in North America.
I took this when we were on holiday in the Cairngorms in Scotland. We were driving up a very high road when we spotted an entire herd of them. They had 'escaped' from a local reindeer centre further down the mountain. Whilst I was photographing them, a ranger turned up to check out where they were (the leader wears a GPS tracker). They were very much smaller than I realised

Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), aka caribou in North America, is a species of deer with circumpolar distribution, native to Arctic, sub-Arctic, tundra, boreal, and mountainous regions of northern Europe, Siberia, and North America. Both male and female reindeer grown antlers yearly, the males typically shed them after rut in the fall while the female retain their antlers through spring until the calves are born in May.
