Water taxi on the Spree, at the heart of Berlin's government district. The buildings are, from left to right: 1) the Jakob-Kaiser-Haus, a parliamentary building named after Jakob Kaiser (1888 - 1961), a member of the Zentrumspartei, Christian trade unionist, and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime. 2) The Reichstagspräsidentenpalais which, until 1919, was solely used as a residence for the respective president of the German Reichstag. During the Weimarer Republik democratic panels were held there. Nowadays, it houses the Deutsche Parlamentarische Gesellschaft (German parliamentary society), a non-party association of members of the German Bundestag, the German state parliaments, and the European Parliament. 3), of course, is the Reichstag building, the seat of the German government. Hoisted up on the roof of the Reichstag building are the German national flag and also the flag of Europe (on the left, unfortunately, you can't see the wreath of stars here).

Processing-wise, I did a lot with Lightroom's new masking tool. I have mentioned it earlier, whenever I think that I'm done with the subscription and am finally ready to cancel it, Adobe comes up with something good that makes me "stay". The new (auto) masking tools in LR are such a "good something", they make it so easy and convenient to process different parts of an image with different adjustments. Since it's (Sliders) Sunday, I didn't leave it at LR adjustments, of course. I also went into Color Efex and applied several filters (please don't ask me which, I can't remember) for that "over-processed Sunday look" ;).

HSS, everyone, have a nice week ahead, and take care!

View down the central funnel inside of the Reichstag dome on top of the Reichstag building, the seat of the German parliament (the Bundestag). The funnel is a so-called "light-diverting element" with mirrors that guides diffuse daylight into the plenary hall of the German Bundestag ten meters below and also serves as an exhaust "pipe" that deflects used air from the plenary hall through the 10-meter-wide central opening at the apex of the dome (which you can't see here).

For whatever reason the checked "pattern" of the reflective windows on the funnel's base (theoretically one could take a look into the plenary hall) always reminds me of a gambling table at a casino, hence the title which I've borrowed from one of the best James Bond movies (and I also like the 1967 parody). But of course, there's nothing "royale" or "gambling-ish" about this profoundly democratic place (which, as you know, it hasn't always been). Surrounding the funnel's base you can find the permanent exhibition "From the Reichstag to the Bundestag" which tells the eventful history of the Reichstag building from its beginnings to the present day.

Happy Window Wednesday, Everyone :)

Weekend postcard for Sliders Sunday and the first boat(s) for 2023 :) Taken last May on a nice and sunny walk along the Spree at Berlin's government district. The lady in blue is magrit k..

The historical building on the left is the Reichstag building (the seat of the German government) with Norman Foster's modern dome peeking out between the Flags of Europe and Germany, and the modern building center-right is the Paul-Löbe-Haus that houses offices for the members of the German Bundestag (parliament).

I do not recall any of my sliding/processing steps, because this photo has been waiting patiently in my "Flickr coming soon" desktop folder for a few months. Ever since I put that folder on my desktop, unmissable, so to say, I am actually posting from it. I had said folder on drive D before which meant that I never ever opened it – out of sight, out of mind, I guess ;)

Have a nice weekend, and HSS, Everyone!

More boats and still more Berlin government district. I know, you've seen quite many boats on my stream this year (so finally it is a stream in the true sense), and a few more might follow. This is a view from the Kronprinzenbrücke (Crown Prince Bridge), so it's probably about time to also upload a photo of that bridge (which was designed by internationally renowned architect Santiago Calatrava and of which you can see one of its rusty "elbows" resting in the water of the Spree in the lower right corner of my photo) soon. And maybe it's also about time to go on another boat trip :) The two governmental buildings connected by the double bridge across the Spree are the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (MELH) on the left, and the Paul-Löbe-Haus (PLH) on the right. You can also see a little bit of the Reichstag building, the seat of the German government, behind the PLH.

Processing-wise I applied this and that mostly in Color Efex. What I remember of "this and that" is the Reflector Efex filter (Gold) to brighten the foreground, and the Tonal Contrast filter. Nik Collection's new version now also has control points for each filter, which is very convenient, so I also applied the Polarization filter, but only on the boat in the foreground, as it didn't look nice in the sky at all.

Happy Sliders Sunday, and enjoy your weekend, dear Flickr friends!

Bootsparade

Play of sunlight and shadow on a detail of the Reichstag Building Berlin.

2021. Dec..02.

Today the Federal Republic of Germany is bidding farewell to our long-time Chancellor Angela Merkel with all due honor. She set a milestone because she was the first woman to hold this position in Germany. I think she did a good job of treating all the heads of state in the world with great diplomacy. Respect and thanks for 16 years of her life in which she served our country and is now going into well-deserved retirement!

I left one little suitcase in Berlin

I keep it there for when I ever dream

of joys gone by then

I'll always find them

in that dear suitcase safely guarded in Berlin.

I left one little suitcase in Berlin

I leave with there if eerie it may seem

For when my longing,

nostalgic longing

and desires haunt me

I feel welcome to return...

The Reichstag Building in Berlin, Germany has a mirrored cone in the center of its glass dome that reflects natural light into the building's legislative chamber. The mirrors allow visitors to see the Bundestag, Germany's parliament, in action, and increase the building's energy efficiency. HSoS!

(Smile on Saturday Theme: Mirror or Mirror Glass)

The current Reichstag dome is a glass dome, constructed on top of the rebuilt Reichstag building in Berlin. It was designed by architect Norman Foster and built to symbolize the reunification of Germany. The distinctive appearance of the dome has made it a prominent landmark in Berlin.

I am back from the most amazing weekend in Berlin. My first trip outside the UK in the best part of ten years. Whilst I probably should be working, I was desperate to have a quick look at my photos and this one stood out.

For those who don't know, this is the Reichstag building (German Parliament). Well actually, its the central dome in the central part of the building, designed by British architect Sir Norman Foster.

This is SOOC, the slight warp comes from using a fisheye.

More to follow ... (must get back to work) :-)

Norman Foster has successfully connected new and old, past and present with the epic new Reichstag Dome.

Walking up to the top of the Reichstag Dome, the curves and edges of this interesting piece of architecture make for a difficult, if not interesting, composition.

Looking down from the spiral walkway, the central mirror system looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.

Detail of the Reichstag building in Berlin with the famous sign "Dem deutschen Volke" (To the German People).

The term Reichstag, when used to connote a diet, dates back to the Holy Roman Empire. The building was built for the Diet of the German Empire, which was succeeded by the Reichstag of the Weimar Republic. The latter would become the Reichstag of Nazi Germany, which left the building (and ceased to act as a parliament) after the 1933 fire and never returned; the term Reichstag has not been used by German parliaments since World War II. In today's usage, the German word Reichstag (Imperial Diet Building) refers mainly to the building, while Bundestag (Federal Diet) refers to the institution.

Finally I took this photograph.

Maybe I'll process it in DPP4 at some day …

The futuristic and transparent design of the Reichstag dome makes it a unique landmark, and symbolizes Berlin's attempt to move away from a past of Nazism and instead towards a future with a heavier emphasis on a united democratic Germany
