My Brother-in-law had to put his dog to sleep this morning, rough gig. He and my wife's sister live down in Cincy so we don't get to see them that often but we just got to see the whole family over the 4th weekend, including newborn and the old timer dog. Dante was 11 and lived a full, happy life.

He was a Shepherd mix, full of life and zest, hence his name. Liam and Dante hooked up while he was in college still, much like me and my mutt. Liam and Dante had a very similar bond as I do with my dog. My mutt came with the name Dacoda, but he could have easily been a Dante - he's kinda crazy too.

I had the afternoon off from work and my wife called me to prep me for the email that awaited my inbox that her sister had just sent the family letting us know - My wife knew I would take it rough. And she was right; I blubbered, cried, wheezed, and snorted like a child in a way that I have not done in probably more than a decade. My face was soaked. It was an uncontrolable reaction. We see death on tv daily, we've become numb to it. We attend funerals more often than we would like. I stay strong, I am that post for people to lean on, and I stay strong. But whenever a dog is involved, I loose it. My wife can attest but she pretends she doesn't notice to help me feel like I'm macho or something. I tear up everytime. I also refuse to go see "Marley and Me" for that reason - I'm living with my own Marley. But this hit close to home for me, my mutt is seven, not very far from 11. I wailed like a little boy.

Katie and Liam just welcomed a new baby boy into their lives a month ago, and 'ol Dante was great with the little guy. He was slow and confused and not real sure what to make of all this new attention, but he dealt. The family was able to get away to Michigan for a week and brought Dante as long as he had a good shaving first (father-in-law is allergic). He's a slow dog already - and he's deathly affraid of fireworks like so many other pups, so his skittish and lethargic behavior was par for course for the week as all the neighbors sounded off explosives almost all week. When the trip home to Cincy brought continued lethargy, no eating and drinking, and heavy breathing they took him in to the vet yesterday and to their horror they found a very large mass on his liver and/or spleen - most likely cancerous, and due to his age more than likely would not survive treatment. They brought him home and decided to have one last happy night with him where he could be with the family, and avoid the cruel and painful treatments that always follow. This morning, Liam took him in and said Goodbye - and laid him to rest in their backyard.

Life moves fast with your dogs. They can't tell you that they don't feel right. They can only show you through behavior. Please keep an eye on them, pay attention to the little things, take them in if something is strange, and most importantly, love your pup - they may not always be there to follow you around the corner in the house, they may not always be there laying down in the hallway while you're getting ready for work and you inadvertanly kick them in the head every morning when they lift their head as you step over them, and they may not always be there to make you laugh out loud.

Dante was a good boy. I'm really glad I had the privilege of playing with him over the weekend.

You'll be missed Dante - now you can eat all the broccoli stems you wish, you goofy dog.

twice a year - whether you need it or not.
