My annual weekend trip to London, which gives me Saturday afternoon, evening and Sunday morning out and about wandering where ever I want to go. My daughters (and a coach load of ladies) are on the trip so I do have some other commitments on Saturday evening. Travelling at the beginning of November we were earlier than previous years so, although the decorations were in place, London wasn't as colourful as previous visits. I had decided to walk across to Little Venice as it isn't far from our hotel at Marble Arch and I hadn't been before. Having walked along the canal at home all summer chasing wildlife I wasn't impressed by a canal in London, it was windy so no reflections in the water and I left fairly soon. I'd seen Paddington Rail Station on the map not far away so I headed there. I got my camera out for the first time, it was fairly quiet and there weren't any restrictions on cameras (as far as I could see) I made eye contact with quite a few of the staff and smiled and nodded, as I would back home, and got quite a pleasant reception, no worries about me and my backpack and camera. I was pleasantly surprised at how clean the station was. I did a nine mile circle taking in Hyde Park , Piccadilly, Regent Street and Oxford Street. The London to Brighton run was on the following day so Regent Street was shut with many of the cars and loads of other transport related stuff on display. It was busy and the light was going so I didn't bother taking many photos. The cars were leaving Hyde Park just down the road from our hotel at dawn on Sunday but I couldn't muster enough enthusiasm to walk down even though I was up early. I grabbed some window and people shots on Oxford Street. Some of the Christmas displays were already in place, most notably Selfridge's, some of the displays were behind temporary work barriers as a new pavement was being laid and I couldn't get to the window, I decided to go back on Sunday morning and climb over them-which I did, Oxford street was very quiet just after 8.00 am and I got my shots.
On Sunday I walked a ten mile circle out to the Thames South Bank, on to the Shard and Tower Bridge. I went across in to The City and wound my way back to Hyde Park. We had really good journeys both ways and the coach driver did the journey home without a break, he was able to get back to the depot and park up inside his 4 1/2 hours driving time which I think is a first in 16 years. I walked home from Slaithwaite and rounded my weekend mileage to twenty miles, this is the furthest I've walked since I had reconstructive surgery on my right foot at the end of February. I wasn't particularly fired up for the trip after one of the most difficult years I can remember-and that's saying something-so I struggled to find something to get enthused about which is probably why I didn't take any photos at Little Venice and very few at Regents Street.
This is a photograph from the second running of the Athlone Flatline Half Marathon ("The Flatline") was held at Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Saturday 14th September 2013 at 11:00. There was beautiful weather for the event which started and finished at St. Aloysius College near the Canal Banks area of the town just slightly west of the River Shannon. This event was professionally organised and the very flat course meant that many runners both seasoned and new to the scene achieved season or personal bests. Almost 1,000 participants successfully completed the event in the beautiful September sunshine. Everyone involved must be congratulated for the flawless running of the event. This event is sure to go from strength to strength over the coming years. The "Flatline" also included an option for a full marathon which was fully supported by the Marathon Club of Ireland and the East of Ireland Marathon Series. This allowed participants to run the Flatline twice for the qualifying marathon distance. About 80 people took part.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: Such is the popularity of the race this year that registration closed for the race in mid-August 2013. There were well over 1,000 participants who took to the start line.
Weather: The weather on the day was almost perfect for running. The runners were bathed in warm September sunshine for the duration of the race and into the early afternoon. In the sections of the race out towards Clonown and around the Bord na Mona areas there was a stiff breeze but nothing major.
Course: "The Flatline" ceratinly lived up to its name. It is as flat a course as one is likely to find. A garmin connect gps trace of the route is provided here [connect.garmin.com/activity/199678412] Geographically the course spends much of the race in County Roscommon with only the first and last kilometers actually in County Westmeath. This gives geographically inclined runners the novel opportunity to race in two Irish provinces in one race. The course had distance markers at every kilometre and mile along the way. There were official pacers provided by the race organisers.

Refreshments: An Alkohol Frei bottle of Erdinger was provided to every finisher as they crossed the line. Light refreshments were served.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. Anti-War March from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square
Soldiers and military families were among 5,000 protesters in London demonstrating against UK military operations in Afghanistan.
The Stop the War Coalition says it was the first march against the Afghan war since the conflict began in 2001.
L/Cpl Joe Glenton, of York, who faces a court martial for refusing to return to Afghanistan, led the protest march.
The government said Afghanistan must become "stable and secure" before Nato forces could pull out.
'Disobeying orders'
The death of British corporal James Oakland, of the Royal Military Police, in a blast on Thursday took the number of UK personnel killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 222.
The protesters gathered at Speakers' Corner, in Hyde Park. They then set off for Trafalgar Square, where speakers including MP George Galloway and campaigner Tariq Ali addressed the crowd.
The Metropolitan Police estimated that 5,000 people took part.
Some of the crowds chanted "Gordon Brown, terrorist" while others sang "What do we want? Troops out".
L/Cpl Glenton told the BBC it had been "touch and go" whether he would be arrested by military police for taking part.

His court martial for refusing to return to Afghanistan is due to be held next month. At the moment he is confined to barracks on weekdays.
Defending his appearance at the demonstration, he said: "This is my choice.
"Somewhere down the line it's all going to come apart and people are going to be prosecuted for these things."
'It's scary stuff'
L/Cpl Glenton said people who believed he had brought disgrace upon the British Army were "entitled to their opinion".
He said: "I think what I am doing is in the British interest. I take my duty very seriously."
The soldier could be sent to prison for going absent without leave in 2007, something he said he was not looking forward to.
He said: "It's scary stuff, I have a wife and a family.

"I don't want to [go to prison] but if I gone back [to Afghanistan] and been involved in that and caused the deaths of innocent people then I would never be able to shrug that off, I would never had been free.
"The fact that I said no is fairly liberating, I can assure you."
Another speaker in Trafalgar Square was Peter Brierley whose son, L/Cpl Shaun Brierley, was killed in Iraq.
Mr Brierley, from Batley in West Yorkshire, confronted former Prime Minister Tony Blair at a memorial service at London's St Paul's Cathedral, telling him: "You have my son's blood on your hands."
Speaking at the demonstration, he said: "They [the military] are not doing any good while they are over there.
"They need to leave the country to sort itself out. While the British troops are there they are actually bringing in insurgents who are coming in to fight."
'Key to security'
Meanwhile, a survey suggests that public support for the war has fallen further. The YouGov survey for Channel 4 News found that 62% of those questioned wanted British troops withdrawn in the coming year at the latest.
Of 2,042 adults polled, 6% said that British troops were winning the war, compared with 36% who said they were not winning yet but eventual victory was possible, and 48% who said that victory was not possible.
A similar survey in 2007 found that 36% thought that victory was impossible.
A spokesman for the MoD said on Friday: "It is vital to the UK that Afghanistan becomes a stable and secure state that is able to suppress violent extremism within its borders.
"Britain's own security is at risk if we again allow Afghanistan to become a safe haven for terrorists, and that would be the result if Nato forces were to pull out of the country immediately."
In February 2003, an estimated one million took part in a march in London against the Iraq war.

this was made during a photoworkshop about migration and asylum with resa, wastl and charlie of my class
I found this fastener on the ground at the Port of Tacoma, which was littered with all sorts of odds and ends. It seems as if there is a preponderance of careless activity at the Port, one of the products of which is a plethora of interesting objects littering the place.
Warning - "Don't be a jerk", from a top-secret downtown Sunnyvale restaurant.
I like how the "we" part is bolded as if they were going to originally make the sign say "you" or something else, and then realised that probably wouldn't work.
