Pauline Boty was almost a forgotten artist, but recently the historian Simon Schama shed light on her life and career in his TV series The Story of Us. She was a fine Pop Artist and a wonderful person. Essentially she sacrificed her life to save her unborn child, refusing cancer treatment during her pregnancy. She died aged 28.
Fortunately there's an article about her on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauline_Boty
When I looked her up I discovered that there'd been an exhibition of her work at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery in 2013 and I'd missed it, which was very disappointing because such exhibitions are rare and apparently none is planned for 2025.
Today the Hereios of the We’re Here! Group are visiting Freethinkers.
This is a photograph from the "Lock Up The Year" Royal Canal Trail Marathon which was held along on the banks of the Royal Canal from Moyvalley, Co. Kildare to Leixlip, Co. Kildare on Wednesday 31st December 2014 at 09:00. The race started at Furey's Pub at Moyvalley and proceeded westwards to Blackshade bridge where the race turned around and then the route was direct back to Leixlip. The running route followed the Royal Canal Way from start to finish. There was also the option of a 1/2 marathon (from Cloncurry Bridge near Enfield) and a 10KM distance from The Maws at Kilcock. This event is made possible through the cooperation of East Of Ireland Marathons and Jarlath B. Hynes and Brendan Murphy from Leixlip, Co. Kildare (see a Facebook group page here www.facebook.com/groups/524790427539290/?fref=ts). The key aspect of this run is that they are three races are informal and self supported runs along on the Royal Canal Way trail. There is no chip timing, water stops, marshals, massages, t-shirts or prizes. But it is an enjoyable run along the Royal Canal and a chance to meet up with fellow runners during the race and then after it at the Le Cheile clubhouse in Leixlip. There are some nice numbers for the race today. 26.2 miles, 2 counties, 5 traversals in and out of Meath and Kildare, crossing 6 roads, and passing under 5 bridges before the finish outside the Leixlip amenities center. The marathon today is supported by the East of Ireland Marathon Series. Thanks is also extended to the Le Cheile AC who made some of their facilities available today after the race(s).
Heavy rain before Christmas and some grazing cattle the canal towpath (particularly between Cloncurry and Kilcock) was very wet and muddy and proved difficult and testing terrain for all of the runners. However despite a strong breeze at a few sections the weather was bright and dry and made for good running conditions. The frosty weather of the last two days made other grassy underfoot conditions firm.
This photograph is part of a larger set of photographs taken of the event(s) today. They are all available for viewing in this Flickr set. www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157647714256973/
The Royal Canal is a very special piece of Irish Heritage. It's waterway channel and it's banks have seen much history with both the rise and subsequent decline in railway and canal travel and transportation. Our run on the Royal Canal is made possible by the incredible hard and dilligent work by the Inland Waterways of Ireland and countless volunteer individuals who turned their vision of a restored Royal Canal into reality.

We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs
We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?
The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.
Creative Commons aims to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!

English Comedic Genius And Hero Jeremy Hardy Refuses Point Blank To Give Up His Seat On The Train To Old Fascist Warmonger.
********************
Interviewed after his ordeal Jeremy was asked if he had been scared. Jeremy said:
" Scared? No. I wasn't scared but it was rather unpleasant. I just adopted my stiff upper lip pose and looked straight forward. It is the little things that matter in the fight for freedom. The dirty look, the barely concealed tut-tut of disapprobation, the harsh word, the hard stare, the refusal to bow the head, the slight snigger of derision at unjust authority...THESE are the things that start revolutions and change the world. I suppose I was just doing my bit.
Look on me as the male Rosa Parks in the battle against injustice and tyranny. I mean it has come to something when an Englishman can't sit on a train without being accosted and discommoded by some fascist upstart with a fucking sink plunger coming out of his domed head. I take it that IS its fucking head. Anyway, what does it need a fucking seat for? The stupid cunt can't even fucking sit down. Misuse and abuse of unelected and therefore undemocratic authority is what I call it. "
A similar planning application was refused a year ago. The reasons given by the council for their refusal were as follows :
1. The proposed development would be overbearing and dominant and result in a
shadowing effect upon the rear garden and rear elevation resulting in a loss of outlook on the neighbouring residents, particularly those living at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 Spring Bank Crescent by reason of its size and siting and is contrary to Policies GP5, BD5, N12 and N13 of the Unitary Development Plan (Review 2006) and the Neighbourhoods For Living SPG.
2. The proposed development would result in over looking and a loss of privacy on the neighbouring residents particularly those living at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 Spring Bank Crescent by reason of its height and the proximity to the common boundary with these dwellings and is contrary to Policies GP5, BD5, N12 and N13 of the Unitary Development Plan (Review 2006) and the Neighbourhoods For Living SPG.
3. The proposed development would due to its size, siting, height and mass result in an overly dominant form of development that would be seriously detrimental to the setting of the Listed Buildings, Springbank and Springbank Cottage. Furthermore due to the elevated ground level of the proposal in comparison to the Listed Buildings the proposal would cause further planning harm and have a detrimental effect upon the spatial settings of the Listed Buildings. As such the proposal is contrary to Policies BD5, N12, N13, N19 of the Unitary Development Plan (Review 2006).
4. The proposed development would due to its size, height, mass and proximity to the boundary with Headingley Lane result in an incongruous addition to the street scene that is out of character with the plan form of the area and not in keeping with the character and appearance of the Headingley conservation area. As such the proposal is contrary to adopted UDP Policies N12, N13 and N19 of the Unitary Development Plan (Review 2006).
5. The Local Planning Authority considers that the proposed development would
represent overdevelopment of the site, such that the extra car parking spaces are required and the need for bins and cycle parking, plus the loss of planting/landscaping would result in significant harm to the setting of the existing Listed Buildings. This is contrary to Policies GP5, N19, LD1, N12 and N13 of the Unitary Development Plan (Review 2006) and the guidance contained within Planning Policy Statement 1 and Planning Policy Guidance 15.
6. The Local Planning Authority considers that the development is without adequate
provision of green space to the detriment of future occupants’ residential amenity and appropriate access to the hierarchy of spaces identified within Policy N2, thereby being contrary to Leeds Unitary Development Plan (Review 2006) Policies N2, N4 and GP5.
7. The proposed development is considered to be contrary to Policy H15 of the
Unitary Development Plan (Review) 2006 by reason of being out of scale and character with its surroundings. The proposal also fails to improve the quality of accommodation available for students by reason of unsatisfactory levels of light and outlook to habitable room windows.

This is where Guru Gobind Singh Ji's two youngest sons, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh Ji and Sahibzada Fateh Singh Ji were bricked alive by the Mughals after refusing to convert to Islam.
The Guru Granth Sahib is placed within the perimeter of the wall, if I remember correctly.
--
Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib is a complex consisting of several important shrines or Gurdwaras linked to the younger sahibzadas (younger sons) of Guru Gobind Singh. It is located about 5 km north of Sirhind (30°37'N, 76°23'E) and marks the sad site of the execution in 1705 of the two younger sons of the tenth Sikh master at the behest of Wazir Khan of Kunjpura, the faujdar of Sirhind.
The main entrance to the Gurdwara complex was built by Maharaja Yadvindra Singh of Patiala in 1952. The historical wall where the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh were bricked has been preserved in this Gurdwara. The sanctuary containing the historic wall in known as Gurdwara Bhora Sahib.
Gurdwara Burj Mata Gujri and Gurdwara Shahid Ganj are also located in the main complex of Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib. It was at the site of Gurdwara Burj Mata Gujri that the two younger sons Fateh Singh and Zorawar Singh of tenth Guru and the Guru's mother Mata Gujri were kept in confinement by Wazir Khan.
The place were the three were confined is known as `THANDA BURJ' which was considered a cool place during the summer. But it was a punishment for Guru's sons and his mother to kept here in extreme winter when the "burj" would be extreme cold. It was at this place that Mata Gujri collapsed on hearing the news of the martyrdom of her grandsons. Later on, Gurdwara Mata Gujri was constructed at this location to honour Mata ji.
1949 Gillette Milord w Case and Blades
RICHARDS RAZORS; MAKE ME AN OFFER I CAN'T REFUSE!
Vintage 1949 Gillette "TTO" Gold "MILORD" Safety Razor, with original case that is in "VERY GOOD"
vintage condition. The outside of the box has a small amount of scuffing on it, which can be seen
in the pictures. On the inside backing it has "Gillette Milord". It has a mark where the razor
was bumping against it. The razor is very clean with just a small bit of plate loss on the edges
of the head. It has no rust or major scratches. It has a notched blade bar which dates it to
1949. The doors open and close smoothly and close tight. There is some loss of plating on the top
of the razor. Also included is a container of Gillette Blue Blades. It has been cleaned, even though
there is a spot inside the handle of the razor that I missed,
and sanitized with Barbacide and antibacterial soap; cleaned, oiled and is shave ready. Please be sure to
check the pictures as they are part of the description. Please ask questions; I will try to
answer them to the best of my ability.
Thanks for looking, I'm certain you will enjoy your purchase, as this item is "VERY" highly
collectible and are getting much much harder to find. In this "Brave New World" of throw away
razors (such as Bic and modern day Gillette's) safety razors such as this will unfortunatly never
be seen again.
MY OPINION:
Have you ever considered that modern plastic "razors" (if you want to call them that, personally
I think they should NOT be called razors but "hair removal devices) are made from oil; a quickly
diminishing natural resource, as you can easily see by the steadily rising gasoline prices. Can
you imagine the number of plastic objects that end up in our landfills and oceans; I say "DOWN
WITH THE PLASTIC HAIR REMOVAL DEVICES"; "UP WITH THE PAST REUSEABLE RAZORS".

When I describe an object as 'VINTAGE' or 'ANTIQUE' they will have the typical wear and tear you

expected as opposed to a NEW condition. If an item is in MINT condition I will say so. If an item
has any major issues - dents, deep marks, stains or heavy scratches etc. I will bring these to your
attention in my description.

Page from my altered book art journal. Quote reads, "We can lift ourselves and others as well, when we refuse to remain in the realm of negative thought and cultivate within our hearts an attitude of gratitude." -Pres. Thomas S. Monson
These bold, crumpled red forms rising against the blue sky aren’t industrial offcuts—they’re Rock Strangers, an iconic public artwork by Belgian artist Arne Quinze, installed on Oostende’s promenade. The name says it all: they’re meant to feel unfamiliar, even out of place—interrupting the everyday, much like strangers do.
Quinze plays with contrast here: natural seafront meets alien forms; organic setting meets manmade distortion. The vivid red is a deliberate visual jolt, compelling us to pause, question, and engage. Are they remnants of something? Are they watching us? In a town defined by waves, wind, and history, these sculptures ask: what happens when something refuses to blend in?
I made my peace with their visual disruption a long time ago.
