The city was kind and thoughtful enough to open a bottle-filling station for us just north of Comiskey.
Refresh April with Chris McClelland
"Start."
Everybody has the ability to start something. To some it may seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. This talk will be a frank discussion about ways to start and deliver successful products.
Building mobile apps provides a unique perspective into the challenges of creating successful products. An app can have different users, business goals, design, development and marketing challenges. Based on experiences and insights Chris will share some real world examples, you will hear about what worked, and what doesn’t, tales of starting from nothing, to thinking and delivering big.
Monday 16th April, 7pm
The Black Box
About Chris
Chris runs Belfast-based mobile user-experience company Ecliptic Labs, which acts as an incubator to excellent products such as Performa Sports. Since 2009 he has worked with over 60 companies from startups to global brands delivering mobile apps.
About Refresh
Refresh is a bi-monthly event for the designers and developers of Belfast's web community to get together to share stories, discuss ideas, talk about principles and debate technique. Each Refresh is centred around a short talk and, of course, there's plenty of beer and conversation to be had too.

My friend Cara has started a new business called Refreshed. She takes clothes and revamps, and refreshes them, adding lovely detail and quirky add ons! Very creative!
I took the photos, and helped with the logo design.
Sarah, Cara's friend, modelled for us.

Over the last two decades, this store has underwent many names, starting as a Lucky in 1966, eventually becoming Albertsons in 1999, being divested to Haggen in 2015, and then being dumped to Smart & Final after their short fiasco.
For a majority of its life, this store was a Lucky supermarket, built by them, and generally remained unchanged with the exception of maybe some smaller remodels/refreshes until after it was acquired by Albertsons.
Albertsons performed a heavy remodel after the acquired it in 1999, and it was one of the few Albertsons to remodel to their upscale decor at the time. All Albertsons that have received this decor at this point have closed or were sold off since, but this Smart & Final still leaves traces of it. Part of the remodel included the wood beams and re-doing of the ceilings in the front and sides of the store, while the center store held onto its original Lucky ceiling with Lucky lighting.
This store was divested in 2015 to Haggen, since Albertsons chose to keep the nearby Vons instead. It was the second San Pedro Albertsons divested, with the other one eventually ending back up in Albertsons hands. This one, however, was one of the several bought by Smart & Final.
While Smart & Final has left many remnants of the Albertsons that once was held in this building, a lot has changed to where not much remains. All of the service departments were either walled over or covered with additional refrigerators/shelving to block them off. In early 2024, Smart & Final also renovated the exterior facade of the store, but the interior still remains the same as when they took it over.
