The Whitman / Christen Refractor, "The Pearl" Mount Byers Series II

This is the first scope ever mounted on the 2000 Byers Series II. This was the first day we got it mounted on the new Aluminum Portable Pier and mount.

"Influenced by the rich cultural traditions of Los Angeles muralists, sign lettering, graffiti and calligraphy, artists Siner, Fishe and Dreye will be exhibiting works in a variety of mediums. In addition to the three featured artists work on display will be pieces from the SURVIVE campaign and original large-scale mural collaborations. REFRACTION balances the distinctively raw aesthetics, but complementary works of each artist. What emerges is a continuous visual identity that both provokes and subdues the senses. The result is unfiltered and illuminated"

In Awe of the Straw

This photo is an example of how multiple complex physics phenomena are exhibited in the most seemingly simple situations. At the top of the water where the straw breaks the surface, the water around the straw dips down creating a dented ring around the straw. This dent is due to the high surface tension of water. The water adheres weakly to the straw and strongly to itself because water has very strong intermolecular forces between the water molecules.

At the point on the straw that it enters the water media, the light rays leaves the air and enters a new media, it begin diffracting creating an illusion that the straw is actually bending. Near the surface of the water, only a slight bend is visible, but as the straw is deeper in the water and farther from the viewer’s eye, its diffracted appearance increases until it seems completely split from the original straw. This distortion can be explained by Snell’s Law: n1sinø1 = n2sinø2, where n represents the refractive index. Water has a refractive index of 1.33 and air has a refractive index of 1.00. The greater the difference between two refractive indexes, the greater the angle of diffraction that is exhibited as light travels from one media to the other.

The final concept of physics exhibited here is the magnifying capability of water. The portion of the straw that appears split from the original straw is noticeably enlarged. This magnification illusion can also be understood by comparing the refractive indexes of water and air with Snell’s Law. Because the refractive index of water is 1.33 and of air is 1.00, the maximum possible magnification of the object in water-air interface is about 33%. The degree of magnification in water also depends on the angel at which light rays enter the water media in relation to the viewer’s eye.
