"This telescope is focused on Keck I and Keck II at the summit of Mauna Kea

"(Please do not move or attempt to refocus the telescope)

"On a clear day through the eyepiece of this telescope you can see atop Mauna Kea the twin domes of the Keck telescopes, the world's largest. Keck I and II, unlike this telescope, do not have eyepieces. They collect information about our universe using solid-state detectors (SSDs), some of which are similar to--but much more sensitive than--those in your video camera. Various SSDs, which are sensitive to ultraviolet, visible or infrared light, together with a number of specialized instruments that attach to the telescope, and a complex system of computer hardware and software, combine to "see" into the outer regions of space. Astronomers spend their nights sitting in front of a bank of computer monitors because the SSDs gather data in digital form via computer control.

"The telescope you are looking through is a Newtonian reflector. Isaac Newton designed and constructed the first reflecting telescope in 1672, using a spherical mirror instead of lenses used in earlier refracting telescopes; however, the resulting spherical aberration (the same aberration that plagued the Hubble telescope in its early days) made it unusable. In 1723, John Hadley improve the technology by using a parabolic mirror, which alleviated the spherical aberration, and the reflector telescope became the most popular type telescope used. Today, each of the Keck telescopes uses a very large mirror (10 m wide) comprised of 36 mirror segments, which work together with the instruments and their SSDs, to gather astronomers' data."

My water was tasting warmer than the air, which, as I've pointed out, was reasonably warm today. Plus, I had a tailwind all the way up from the Bridge, which I'm normally not opposed to enjoying, but in this case it meant not much convection cooling was occurring. So, I eased it into the liquor store and bought an icey gatorade and some "high energy" fruit mix. Resoaked my cap and tried to cool down a bit.

The stack originally consisted of 9 frames, but for this demo I've picked out the first, middle, and last. My Mighty MeiKe 85mm f/2.8 was carefully manually refocused at f/8 for each successive shot. I tried using my rail but it seemed not to have the necessary reach so I switched to refocusing. It's harder to do without moving the camera, but I like this one.

Scouts and snipers of the Winchester-based 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Virginia Army National Guard conduct a platoon attack exercise during their 10-day eXportable Combat Training Center rotation June 25, 2014, at Fort Pickett, Va. The brigade-wide XCTC was designed to train and validate platoons on tasks that support offensive and defensive operations under daylight and hours of limited visibility. Units will concentrate on training selected mission essential tasks in a realistic field environment to refocus junior leaders on tactical field craft. The Army National Guard’s XCTC program provides an experience similar to a Combat Training Center to Guard Soldiers at a home station training center, minimizing cost and time away from home and jobs. XCTC is an instrumented field training exercise designed to certify unit proficiency in coordination with First Army. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Sgt. JoAnna Greene/Released)

As part of my decision to refocus my astronaut autograph collection (again), I decided I would get (mostly) signed photo of astronauts I have met. I didn't do that when I met Retired Air Force Col. R. Michael Mullane, but thankfully, he has a website with info on how people can get an autographed picture. (Unfortunately, the photo took a hit in its return, but you can't tell from the scan.)

Mullane mistakenly signed the sleeve, then crossed it out and signed the photo.

And if the photo looks familiar - it's from the STS-27R collection available online. I haven't been able to find high-res pictures from Mullane's other two flights, STS-41D or STS-36.

Mullane also appears at Kennedy Space Center's Astronaut Encounter - but the photo of him they use is suprisingly pixelated.

Alberta’s Minister of Health Adriana LaGrange provided, from Edmonton on Monday, November 18, 2024, an update on the government’s work to refocus the health care system.

Alberta’s government continues to make progress refocusing the health care system to ensure all Albertans get the care they need.

Albertans deserve a health care system that is focused on what matters – better services, improved outcomes, enhanced local decision-making and more support for Alberta’s front-line workers. To ensure these goals are met, Alberta’s government committed to refocus the health care system to give Albertans the health care system they need, without disrupting the services they rely on.

Since announcing plans to refocus Alberta’s health care system in November 2023, significant progress has been made in several key areas.

Under Alberta’s refocused health care system, four fully integrated provincial health agencies are being created to oversee the priority sectors of primary care, acute care, continuing care, and mental health and addiction. Two of the provincial health agencies, Recovery Alberta and Primary Care Alberta, have been established with input from more than 30,000 health care professionals and Albertans.

Additionally, it was recently announced that Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon would become the sector minister for the new continuing care provincial health agency. He has now taken on this role and will oversee continuing care as the government works toward standing up the new continuing care agency. (photography by Chris Schwarz/Government of Alberta)

Trying my best to refocus the hours I'd spend on social media onto my old hobbies. I haven't done any editing in months, and I definitely havent done any of the editing I promised I'd do over a year ago now! Just trying to create a space where I look forward to spending time on it again! Doesnt really help with reducing my screen time, but I'm accomplishing something and that's deffo better for my mental health!

Also buzz cut the sides of my hair again, and painted my nail this morning (well, afternoon probably, I slept in really really late XD) and they immediately got wrecked washing up but aaah weeeeell XD

The Brookings Institution and Boston University School of Law co-sponsored a forum to explore the current state and future prospects of the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) system. The system, established during the Great Depression 90 years ago, is a government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) with nearly $1 trillion in assets and is one of the largest and most frequent debt issuers in the world. Its original and continued goal is to support mortgage lending and related community investment. Its role in the modern housing finance system has been questioned and its regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), has announced a strategic review of the system.

We introduced a number of different viewpoints to help formulate the policy discussion surrounding the FHFA’s review. The opening question was, “Is the FHLB system fine just the way it is?” as has been argued by some of its proponents.

Alternatively, some speakers pressed the case that the best way forward for the FHLB system is to refocus on its core mission of providing mortgage finance to households. Additionally, the case was made for radically expanding the FHLBs’ mission – perhaps expanding into broader infrastructure, industrial (re-)development, or clean energy finance. Alternatively, some scholars have advocated for abolishing this significant GSE entirely. Overarching all of these approaches is the question of what the FHFA can do on its own as a matter of administrative law and what courses of action can only be pursued with congressional authorization.

While many businesses are contracting during the COVID-19 economic downturn, this could be a good time to step up your marketing.  It’s an opportunity to reach people with your message when there’s less “noise” from a variety of competing messages. In addition, while people are spending more time at home, your direct mail package may […]

I will refocus foreign aid dollars to where they’re needed most. I will cut aid to wealthy countries like Russia, Italy, and China, to put money back in the pockets of Canadians. It’s time for you to get ahead.
