I have a problem. Even if I use a continuous shutter to capture motion, when the noise of the shutter (even on muted, which isn't much mute) stops, birds must know that and off they fly! I lose my chance at getting a bird in flight.
I know all of you expert birders don't stop that shutter finger at key moments, but how do you pause to refocus? I miss key motion shots after trying for... I won't even disclose for how many years ;-)

Always wanted to get a Macro of these little guys (Fire Beetles) and along the Canal off Kaiser Augusta Allee there was a load running amok; must say they are a nightmare to capture as they walk and manoeuvre in this sort of bizarre and clumsy fashion, that they sort of go off in one direction so you set yourself up and then suddenly they veer off course, and are completely off in this other direction so now you have to reposition and refocus over and over again, but this came OK methinks.

Mid-June late spring wildflowers partway up Steptoe Butte - with The Palouse below. Loving the light, cloud shadows, & colors!
Steptoe Butte is a thimble-shaped, 3,612-foot tall quartzite mountain in southeast Washington State, USA. Atop the butte, the natural eye has 200 miles to view Idaho and Oregon as well as surrounding mountains, including the Blue and Bitterroot mountains. This entire area was originally home to the Palus People who are said to have described Steptoe Butte as having a view that’s a 10 day ride in all directions.
Today, The Palouse encompasses the top wheat producing county & the 2nd highest barley producer in the US - & is dotted also lately with bright yellow canola fields.

Another journey into the world of manual focus — this time with the TTArtisan 100mm f/2.8 Macro X2 lens on the Canon EOS R7. Handheld shot, using natural light.
Aperture f/5.6, shutter speed 1/320 s.
The star: likely Hycleus polymorphus, exploring a flower dusted with pollen — like a child smeared with biscuits. A second beetle peeks from the top right, but neither was in the mood for a double portrait. 😉
Technical challenges:
Even the lightest breeze can nudge the subject out of focus.
Nature is always moving — insects don’t pose for long.
Distance estimation must be done instantly — no time for refocus.
Aperture selection is crucial to balance sharpness and dreamy blur.
Despite all this, the experience was excellent. The lens feels solid in hand, responds well to light, manual settings are intuitive, and the images are sharp. In tandem with the R7, this manual lens has become my go-to companion for walks in nature.
About the location:
Last night I was lazing around the house, not really motivated to do anything. At around 2:00am I realized that sunrise was only a couple of hours away so I checked the Yahoo weather map conveniently located in the titlebar in Flickr, and it was showing a thin cloud layer to the west moving around 5 mph in my direction. This location is only 35 minutes from my house so I decided that I would stay up through the night and get a super early start. I always face a difficult choice on my way up into the mountains. If I head west on Hwy 138 then I have only this view without any backup locations, but if I head east I have several other options but no view that includes the city, so I have to feel pretty confident about the cloud coverage to head west but I could feel the light coming on this morning. This is a view over Lone Pine Canyon road, the city in the distance, because of the angle looks like one but is actually 3 cities, San Bernardino, Redlands and Beaumont blending together and leading up to Mount San Jacinto in the background.
About the shot:
This was shot using a technique in which you trick the camera into thinking something it's not seeing. I first set the camera to spot metering and metered the sky. Then it set the camera to underexpose by 2 stops switch to manual focus and refocus on the city lights, then I light painted the foreground with a couple of lights at a WB of 5000k.

It is always fun photographing the plover chicks, they are tiny, fast and blend perfectly in the sand. On this occasion I was constantly trying to recompose and refocus the bird due to their run, stop and snatch behavior. I managed to click a few right before the chick started making another run.

It is strange how just holding a smooth wooden ball, may have dramatic effect on us, bringing a calmness, stress, relief, refocus.... It's not magic but there is a mystery about the Peace that it brings.....
For a few days I have been eyeing the Purple Coneflowers in my neighbours garden right beside our house. Many of my Flickr friends have taken wonderful images of these flowers and I have quite a few I took in the last years. So I was not feeling overly inspired. Yesterday, a Yellow Swallowtail butterfly dropped in to drink from the blossoms. Just my luck, the wind was really blowing. The butterfly was riding the blustery gusts like a rollercoaster ride. Not only did I refocus my attention to the photobomber on the flowers, but I literally had to refocus my camera on the subject several times before pressing the shutter. In this moment, the wind was still for a few seconds. Then it blew the butterflies rear end up in the air again. Gosh, that creature held on tight. I managed a few good shots that day. I like this one because it shows the habitat nicely and a side profile of the butterfly.

Needed to slow down even further with some frustration on lack of inspiration. Using Intrepid 8x10, was able to refocus a bit toward a in the moment mindset. The pressures of today sometimes are best met with time to compose, create, and moving on. Thankfully colleagues in the photography world can relate.

You can find the rusty remains of this old vehicle out near Samuelson's Rocks in Joshua Tree National Park. A few images were used for the foreground, blended to optimize lighting and focus. The sky was captured using a higher ISO and refocus... all while hoping the wind and human error didn't nudge the tripod out of position!
This Mournful Thyris was a tough one to catch. It was constantly on the move, I had to be quick to refocus between stops. :)
Took a little jaunt through Mexicantown today since they were having their Cinco de Mayo celebration a little early and took this shot for Jon's group re:focus Michigan . There are many reasons why I love living here and I like the idea of documenting the positive things that Michigan has to offer.

I just wanted to say a quick thank you for your patience — I decided to take a well-needed break from social media lately. Life has been pretty chaotic between photography sessions, work, and my dogs, so I needed some time to reset and refocus. 💛
Here's a recent photo of Helix up on Darwen Moors — one of our favourite peaceful spots. 🌿 It's quiet, no dogs around, and it gives us the perfect space to train, explore, and unwind.
I'll be getting back into sharing more of my work and updates soon, so thank you to everyone who’s stuck around and supported me. It really means the world! 🐾
Last October, we hiked up to Indian Head via the less travelled trail in the national park. It meant clambering over rocks and crevices so I opted to leave my tripod behind and use both my hiking poles. The day was sunny and bright which made the very windy day tolerable for temperatures. Yet, those are not ideal conditions to take pictures of this spot……unless you refocus on your perspective. I bumped up my ISO to freeze the action of the waves and splashes that were rolling and jumping onto the shoreline. I took down the exposure to watch for excessive highlights. I was not prepared for this shot but I did trial and error anyways. What prompted me to shoot this scene was the turmoil of colours brewing away in this big pot called Georgian Bay. Many ships have been lost to the fury of the waves in this bay around this point of the Bruce Peninsula. We have been here many times and this is a different view I was able to catch of this wildly beautiful spot close to home.
A full-frame image of the wood shed at the cabin at Crooked Lake, Oconto County, Wisconsin USA, stacked by yours truly - BUT with a bit of digital manipulation. My digits were quite sore after all that ;-)

Day three of our time in Norway was going to be split with the first half of the day at a place in Rondane called Peer Gynt hytta, before we'd head off in the car to Jotunheimen for the afternoon.
I'm starting off with this picture which sort of turned out to be my last picture. At least my last picture with my 70-200mm lens before it died on me. The rotten luck! Soon after this photo was taken I was trying to frame another composition when the lens stopped focusing. Nothing I could do would make it work :( I discovered I could still focus manually whilst using the camera's screen to zoom in on my focus point. However the lens would then "drift" out of focus quite quickly meaning, at best, I could take two photos before needing to refocus. All a tad annoying when you're on a five day photo trip to an amazing place! So that was my knee and now my lens that had packed up on me lol.
Once I got back to Sweden I sent the lens off for repair and I must say the small private company Tamron uses here in Sweden for repairs was top notch. Turned out the auto focus motor and some electronics packed in but have been fixed now so all's good! Still wasn't cheap and the timing of it was the worst but hey ho...
This was my second attempt at photographing this area at night.I thought I had everything setup with the lens focused to infinity and taped before I left to go out but when I started shooting the pics were soft again. I may have made an error setting the infinity but regardless I had a powerful flashlight and managed to refocus with live view.
It was low tide and I was going to do some light painting but the tripod was barely balancing on three slippery rocks and I struggled getting good lighting effects and in addition to that, my used 11-16 gets lens flare from streetlights like the one on the left.
Will have to rethink, an try a different lens.
Having said all that, this one came out "acceptably well" for me. I'll need to go full frame some day methinks. :)
Studies show that taking a weed break allows your mind to rest, recharge and refocus, which can directly improve your productivity for the rest of the day, at least for katydids ツ゚
I quite like this photo, but the seagull on the man's head is something of a distraction, so I did something to try and refocus the photo. The next photo is the result.
Hello friends! Some time ago I wanted to take a photo like this, although it didn't turn out exactly as I had imagined, it looked pretty good and I decided to publish it! The main idea was to be with the mask on, in a dark room and illuminate only the face with a concentrated light... I will tell you a little "how it was done" so that you can understand it better.
I told my little son, I want to do this in a dark room, you will have the camera on a tripod and you will only have to focus and frame, once done, you turn off the light and I will be sitting at a certain distance, without moving, with a remote control in my hand to shoot, please son, once focused, don't touch the camera at all, because if you do, you'll have to reframe and refocus! OK Daddy! So, once focused and framed, he turned off the light... then it was my turn, I didn't move, with the remote control in my hand and a light in the other... I had to illuminate my face and shoot... .then after about 10/15 minutes and several attempts, we ended the session!
I recognize that we spend some fun moments with my son!
When I saw the results and worked a little on photography I realized that I already have... a great substitute, he did great!

Last night (12 Aug) at 9:30 pm I received a phone call that Tidda was running at full speed on this bridge, trying to get home! There are big logging trucks going over this narrow bridge and even at night there are trucks and traffic with gaps only just long enough for a dog to run across at high speed. It was a bold and daring move but her only possible way home.
Unfortunately, once again people trying to catch her drove her to turn around and disappear into the bushes on the wrong side of the river again. I was there within 10 minutes - I was in such a rush that I even forgot my phone - but could not find her. I called her and walked around and then later sat near where she disappeared until almost 5 a.m.
Still no Tidda, but this new sighting is very good news. She is well. She is remaining in the area. She is trying to get home. She still has her leash on.
I can refocus my strategies and am really, really hoping for a reunion in the near future!!

Hitchhiker. Unfortunately I was initially focused on composition. Once I realised he had a hitchhiker on his wing it was too late to refocus, the moment was gone.

I generally don't like making new year's resolutions. However, I remembered while driving the other day how much I like photographing landscapes.
My rythm of life has made it harder to get out of the city for long periods of time. This has led to my photography shifting towards everyday street-city photography, which I actually enjoy a lot.
Despite that, a change I would like to implement is to get out of the city more, spend time in the beautiful beaches and mountains of Cyprus, and refocus my photography into landscapes.
