I can't resist showing one more picture of this magnificent building. This one makes me recall what it was like to visit on the day we did. My first impression was one of peacefulness. Although we were not alone by a long shot, the place didn't feel at all crowded. The fact that it was a Tuesday and not the weekend probably helped. Also, I remember that there were very few foreign tourists at the time of our visit. I can imagine that the ambiance would have been quite different had there been busloads of westerners with a bunch of loud-speaking guides. It felt much more authentic to see colourful sarees float in the wind (instead of blue jeans and sneakers) and Indian families relaxing and enjoying themselves.

Dedicated to my Flickr friends David and Sheree. They came to our home as un-met friends and left as family members whom we can't wait to see again. For those of you who also have them as contacts you should know that they're the real thing. Vibrant, caring and passionate about photography and life.

We miss you two already.

This image was captured on an early morning shoot with David. Beyond the reflecting pool is of course the Washington Monument and in the distance you can see the Capitol.

The Masjid-i Jomeh at Isfahan (9th century, 11th and 12th century): An early hypostyle Abbasid mosque with cylindrical, brick piers to which the Seljuqs added two monumental and extraordinary domes, one on the qibla side (built by Nizam al-Mulk between 1072 and 1075) and one on the northern side (1088-89), and four iwans with pishtaks in the centers of its four porticoes overlooking the courtyard built in the early 12th century. It is the most cited example of the transformation from hypostyle plan to four-iwan plan.

The colour, beauty and atmosphere of the unique, but threatened, cork oak forests of Portugal are captured and reflected in this thoughtful formal garden. The ancient cork oaks are represented by the curved, sculptural stacks of bark forming the entrance, and by the simple Cinnamon-orange sculpture, inscribed with a beautiful and evocative poem - Ɓrvores - by Antonio Ramos Rosa.

Young cork oaks are planted to structure the space. The area is enclosed by a backdrop of tall waving grasses fronted by a vibrant tapestry of dark red and lime green flowering plants. The old and young are reflected in the dark waters of the central pool. Hinting at the bubbling source of life and its darker, stiller conclusion, the pool gives cause for reflection and reflections.

Echoes of the cork oak landscape can be seen not only in the dry grasses but also in the stone of the boulders and the reclaimed granite of the benches and pool. Playful use of lynx footprints may amuse visitors but they also point to the potentially haunting loss of this beautiful animal should the cork oak forests disappear.

The ancient Greeks so revered cork oak trees as symbols of liberty and honour, that according to Pliny the Elder, only priests were allowed to cut them down.

Today cork oaks are again protected by law. More uses for cork are being discovered all the time and it is to be hoped that the unique landscape of the cork oak forests will survive and thrive for generations to come. We hope that our interpretation of this beautiful and unique landscape can help in some small way to safeguard this unique heritage, since, in the words of Jorge Paiva: ā€œThe cork oak forests of Portugal are Europe’s Amazon forestsā€.

For various reasons, I haven't been especially active on Flickr for a bit. But.. I'm baaaack. :)

Taken Feb 5, 2011 in Washington DC. I live 12 miles away from this, but I'd never dragged myself out at night to capture it. That's going to change.

The twin reflecting pools are almost an acre in size each and features the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools are actually on the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood symbolizing the void left by the 9/11/2001 attack.

The 3D TORONTO sign in Nathan Phillips park runs through a series of color combinations.

This is the Lincoln Memorial with the Reflecting Pool in front of it. I took this on a very pleasant summer evening when the humidity was low and the tourists were plentiful. Some of the glow on the Lincoln Memorial is the constant camera flashes going off while my shutter is open. And some of the glow is that they just light that sucker up. (DC is really a lovely place to drive around in the dark because all the white stone is beautiful in the lights; plus, less traffic).
