Calcium carbonate and bagasse waste, by-products of the sugar-refining process at Tate & Lyle, can be transformed and scaled-up into an architectural wall prototype. The material and form offers important thermal and accoustic properties for indoor spaces. The complex surface was produced by self-generative computer designs and digitial crevices could be occupied by plants and wildlife, helping them to thrive within an urban environment.

Waste Age: What can design do?
(October 2021 – February 2022)
We all know waste is a big problem. So how are we going to fix it?
A new generation of designers is rethinking our relationship to everyday things. From fashion to food, electronics to construction, even packaging - finding the lost value in our trash and imagining a future of clean materials and a circular economy could point the way out of the Waste Age.
Explore major new exhibits that capture the devastating impact of waste including a large-scale art installation by Ibrahim Mahama made from e-waste in Ghana.
The exhibition showcases some of the visionary designers who are reinventing our relationship with waste, including Formafantasma, Stella McCartney, The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Lacaton & Vassal, Fernando Laposse, Bethany Williams, Phoebe English and Natsai Audrey Chieza.
'We must face the problem of waste – we can no longer ignore what happens to things when we get rid of them. Instead of thinking of objects as things that have an end life, they can have many lives. This is not just an exhibition it is a campaign, and we all have an active part in our future.' Gemma Curtin, Curator.

With the model complete, I now had the task of figuring a way to generate custom textures for the scene. Using a combination of filters, noise application, blurs, and wind rendering, I was able to produce several textures that were suitable. I was particularly fond of the outcome for the arch brick texture. I then created 'Grey-scale' variations for the bump mapping I had intended for the scene. This concludes the visual diary.

We were initially given a basic scene set for us to modify. I began my ensuring that the front of the train was visible when viewing the perspective from the front. This was achieved by simply rotating the scene. Secondly I ensured all basic naming conventions were in order and within a decent hierarchy Next, I extruded the nose of the train from the boiler face, and as the reference displayed a subtle increase in size at the end, I ensured this too was pronounced. Next I used the 'Flare' deformer to squash and stretch a sphere into the correct shape for the bolts. I used soft select to create the indent. I positioned this bolt in an accurate position and used 'Duplicate Special' at a 45 degree angle to the pivot, which I had positioned in the centre of the boiler cylinder. By selecting 8 duplicates, this perfectly formed the extra bolts around the boiler. I duplicated these for the remaining bolts. This concludes this section of the diary..

I continued refining my reflection feature in my camera program. I got vertical and four-way reflection working for still images. (Vertical reflection still doesn't work for live images but four-way reflection does...)
I am still tracking down the pesky bug that leaves lines in the middle and edges of the image. I thought it was related to the dimensions of the image so I changed all the images to have even dimensions but that didn't have any noticeable effect, unfortunately. Also, unfortunately, it's a "non-trivial" task (as one of my professors from long ago said) to debug a Metal kernel on an iPhone.
Four-way reflection takes one of the quadrants of the image (upper-left, upper-right, lower-right, or lower-left) and reflects it to the other three quadrants. The result is usually rather queasy...

Poor Norio is still in my program as a test image... This is from a couple of weeks ago when I took his picture on the floor in the living room.
