Anchorage Dive Center's large motor cat, the "Miser's Dream", visible in silhouette above the reefscape with a spotted moray in the foreground. This is one of my favorite shots of the trip.
Manta means carpet or blanket and they are just as magical as a flying carpet. Manta rays can grow up to 7 m in wing span and they have the largest brain to body mass of all fish. This manta was getting cleaned at a cleaning station on the reef. She would hover over the cleaning station and then make a loop to come back for another clean. Every time she made a loop she came over to me, either going past, above or under me, just decimeters away.
12/26/11 - The waters off the shore of Vamizi present an outstanding reefscape - mountains, valleys, plateaux and cliffs- teeming with a bewildering amount of sea life, from the endangered bump-head parrotfish, barracuda, turtles and reef sharks to gregorian corals and giant clams. Simply put, there is equally as much paradise beneath the surface at Vamizi as there is on the pristine beaches. Over the course of the trip I made 6 dives and Molly made 5. The scuba diving at Vamizi is some of the best on earth and words can't explain how unbelievable it truly was to experience it first hand.
