Jamie and I are back from the Philippines and I have a lot to process. Besides our familiar haunts, we went to Anilao to see something different and one thing I noticed was the crazy amount of Redtooth Triggerfish on the reefs. At times it felt like we were swimming through a locust invasion, only cooler.
Lose yourself in the vibrant wonders that exist above and below the waters surrounding the coral reef. Enjoy a unique, up-close-and-personal opportunity to reach beyond the exotic and mysterious air that surrounds these graceful, gentle, fascinating creatures.
Early morning and a group of white spotted surgeonfish - Acanthurus guttatus patrol the reef, periodically swooping down to graze algae.
In the middle of the pack are two bright yellow chinese trumpetfish - Aulostomus chinensis - on the look out for small fish or crustaceans. This fish has three different colour variations - plain brown to green, mottled brown to green, or uniformly bright yellow. The yellow form seems to be the least common in Mauritius and we rarely see two yellow ones together.
maximum length chinese trumpetfish 80cm
white spotted surgeonfish 25cm
From left to right, a bipinnate sea plume, pillar coral (background), red encrusting sponge (foreground), azure vase sponge and lettuce encrusting coral. A wide mesh sea fan is top right, and two red boring sponges are beneath the lettuce coral. Note the tiny fish on the azure vase sponge (bridled goby?) and the sharp nosed pufferfish just to the left of the red encrusting sponge.
I am intrigued by azure vase sponges, which seem to emanate light. My identification book explains that some of them fluoresce, and perhaps that has something to do with their eerie hue.
San Rafael Reef. The "reef" is a huge monocline of steeply dipping sediments extending for 75 miles along the eastern flank of the San Rafael Swell. It posed an impassible barrier for early settlers. This view is looking to the west at the dip slope of the reef. The units exposed here, all of Jurassic age, include the Carmel Formation which forms the triangular flatirons at the base of the reef. The Carmel rests atop the highly resistent Navajo Sandstone, which forms most of the prominent light-colored cliffs. The Navajo rests atop the Wingate Sandstone, the red unit seen here along the crest of the reef. The San Rafael Swell was produced by several surges of uplift during the Laramide Orogeny beginning in this area about 60 million years ago. Grand County, Utah.

Capitol Reef National Park is in Utah's south-central desert. It surrounds a long wrinkle in the earth known as the Waterpocket Fold, with layers of golden sandstone, canyons and striking rock formations. Among the park's sights are the Chimney Rock pillar, the Hickman Bridge arch, and Capitol Reef, known for its white sandstone domes. In the north are the towering monoliths of Cathedral Valley.

This is an old model. The folding techniques are a combination of flat and 3D folds. I am refolding this to obtain the CP. The only way to fold this is precrease, collapse and shape. I will need to improve on the design to minimise the "hollow parts".
