The Red Tail Hawk was back in the sky today. Haven't seen one for quite a while. I don't think that they stay here all winter, so I guess this one will be heading south soon.
I have never been able to get one of these birds to settle long enough for a photograph. In this case the bird was keenly observing a nearby field, so I grabbed a few shots and then we left it to its business.
So I'm sitting at my desk when I glance out the window and see this red-tailed hawk devouring what I assume is what's left of a pigeon. The neighbors have told me from time to time that a hawk has swooped down and taken a pigeon from the park across the street - but this is the first time I've seen anything like this. Naturally, I grab my camera and start taking pictures. I have to take the screen off the window and open it, and it's cold. At one point it even starts snowing. I'm freezing. Then I get the bright idea of taping this, and as I'm running the video, I notice that a squirrel is climbing up the light pole. He goes all the way up to about 3 feet from the hawk, they look at each other, then the squirrel backs off. Because I was going back and forth from video to photos, you get the worst of both worlds here.

Driving back from Berlin Reservoir with Mike Bader, Mike spotted this hawk hunting from some hay bales. He pulled over as I rolled down the window and fired off a few shots. Little soft on the hawk but I liked the colors.
This fella didn't seem to mind me very much as most hawks do. Usually, they'll fly away at first movement. I was able to circle around him and get about 45 feet away and he never moved, only giving me an occasional glance.
For a bird newbie like me, the highly polymorphic Red-tailed Hawk can throw me off. I believe this is an adult light-morph Harlan's classification. Please comment if you know differently! Matt? :)
