Red-shouldered Hawk is a medium-sized buteo, smaller than Red-tailed Hawk but slightly larger than Broad-winged Hawk. In the East, they are found in riparian or swampy woodlands. In the West, they are found in oak woodlands, riparian areas, and suburban areas with large trees. Red-shouldered Hawks are shy and secretive in the East, but they are quite tame in the West and in Florida. The Red-shouldered Hawk is uncommon to fairly common as a breeder throughout the eastern part of its range, but declining in certain areas. In the West, they are expanding north into Washington, when once only found in California and southern Oregon. There are four subspecies: Eastern (B. l. lineatus), California (B. l. elegans), Florida (B. l. alleni), and Texas (B. l. extimus), but plumage overlap exists between Eastern, Florida, Texas, so not all individuals are identifiable to subspecies.
Eastern birds breed across the Midwest, New England, and into the Canadian border region. Northern populations are migratory, wintering mainly below the Canadian border and in the Southeast. Elsewhere the Red-shouldered Hawk is mainly resident. It is common in peninsular Florida and California. They often perch on pole tops and on roadside wires. They hunt primarily for amphibians, reptiles, mice, and some birds. Often noisy, Red-shouldered Hawks are frequently heard before seen, especially on the breeding grounds. Their call is a loud, descending, slightly nasal, repeated "keeyar-keeyar-keeyar!" A softer "kak-kak-kak" is heard during breeding as well.
I found this one along Joe Overstreet Road in Osceola County, Florida.
Sort of checking out the bird feeders and the area where the chipmunks and squirrels run.
One has to be careful using the internet as an authority. There are a wide variety of images claiming to be red-shouldered hawks.

Red-Shouldered Hawk, Buteo lineatus, maybe, sitting on the fence at the corner of the local schoolyard. I had to hold the camera over my head as high as I could reach to get this angle.

It's good to be back home. The butterflies are flitting and the birds are singing. Well, in this case they were all squawking which alerted me that something was up. Turns out that Elvis was sitting in oak three eyeballing the bluebird box before I started snapping. He didn't stick around long, knowing he was not likely to obtain a meal while I was out and the birds obviously knew he was there.
Prior to my leaving for DC, I noted that one of the five bluebirds eggs from the second brood had not hatched. Upon arrival home it had still not hatched. In addition, one baby blue was missing from the nest. The three remaining seem healthy. Their eyes are open and they are behaving as expected. The bad egg has been removed and hopefully all will be well.
Have a wonderful day and happy snapping.

A red shouldered hawk being harassed by a mockingbird, and dragonfly extra bonus.
I was outside doing yard work and happened to look up and saw this Red Shouldered hawk up in the very top of a Ponderosa Pine in my yard.
I ran inside really fast to grab my camera just hoping it wouldn't leave before I got back outside.
Luckily it hadn't. It sat on top of the tree for a while and I was lucky to get several shots of it before and then as it took off.
This was my favorite.
This is cropped quite a lot so I was happy with the detail that is still visible in spite of the crop. Nothing was done to this other than a tiny bit of dodging on its belly to bring out a bit more detail, the crop and adding my signature.

From this perch, the Hawk dropped down to the ground maybe 30 yards away, and then flew up into nearby trees with its prey.
A juvenile playing with a branch. Perhaps thinking that one day she will be breaking some off to build a nest...

7 Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

As indicated, this is a "neighborhood" hawk that is not shy about perching in conspicuous areas around the homes. I think it may have been looking over a backyard bird feeder here. It appears this guy is looking back at me and ready to say "You lookin at me?"
The Red-shouldered Hawks at Brazos Bend State Park have been busier than ever for the past couple of weeks hunting like crazy; I’m guessing there are some babies to feed. Whatever the case is, they are so busy hunting that they hardly pay any attention to the people walking the trails. The result is some pretty great photography opportunities. They really are beautiful birds!

Young Elvis stopped by today to survey the yard. I was out when he arrived but had to go back for the camera. We had a short discussion about the rules for visiting the yard. Then after taking a few snaps, I went on about my business. Elvis stayed until he was discovered by the Mockingbirds and Blue Jays. They quickly escorted him off the property.
Hawk Rules:
1. If you visit my yard, you must allow me to take photos.
2. Songbirds visiting the yard are not on the menu, especially the blue ones. But you are welcome to all of the frogs, lizards, and snakes you desire.
Have a wonderful day and happy snapping.

I almost had a nice shot of this Hawk right over my head. Unortunately a tree branch and a power line interfered with that image : (
Red-winged Blackbirds are fearless and will harass any raptor in their territory to convince them to move to a calmer neighborhood. Here’s one successfully convincing this beautiful Red-shouldered to skedaddle. I waited for quite a while for this Hawk to take flight. Since these birds often lift up (leading to clipped wings) I tried to anticipate this. Naturally, this bird decides to dropped down in front of me. Vegatation kept me from capturing an image while it was on the ground.
Butterfly Hawk - This Red-shouldered Hawk's flight pattern reminded me of a dainty butterfly. The most beautifully patterned and cooperative individual of this species I have observed to date.
