. . . in Haleakalā National Park on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
The drive up to the Visitors Center provided no hint as to the surreal landscape we encountered as we entered the Haleakalā ‘crater’ . . . the ‘moonscape’ was dotted with colourful cinder cones, the result of volcanic vents that had erupted. The scene was a blend of greys, greens and browns with yellow sulfur and red Iron oxide accents.

"Yin & Yang" pendants: Hand-built w/ white clay, kiln-fired (to cone 6) edges glazed w/ "Ali Black", yin & yang hand-painted w/ white & black underglazes.
I've been working with red iron oxide this week and surface decoration using plants. This is a close up photo of a tile I've made featuring the impression of a fern.
These tiles are a different clay body than the rest, one white stoneware and one speckled stoneware.
