After the cancellation of the 2013 Folkestone Air Show, it was good to hear that the Red Arrows had been booked to blast around the sky for 20 mins or so.
I took some photos whilst we soaked in the rays down the seafront.
Silverstone was originally a World War 2 RAF bomber station and, appropriately, on the day of the British Grand Prix each year it became the busiest airport in the UK, and on at least one occasion, in 1999, the busiest airport in the world. Recent changes to the circuit have meant that there is now no runway for aircraft, though helicopters are able to land there. When there was still a runway there the major historic car meetings used to attract a few aircraft visitors and there were flying displays, such as this one at the 1999 Coys International Historic Festival meeting when they had a visit from the Red Arrows, though it was a rather overcast day.
Went on own for a cruise (with Solent & Wightline Cruises) from Gunwharf Quays to Cowes to see the Red Arrows and the fireworks. Annual show at end of Cowes Week,
On Saturday, we watched the wonderful Red Arrows display along with tens of thousands of other Spectators at the Bournemouth Air Festival. Tragically, while returning to the airfield after their display, Flight Lieutenant John Egging was killed when his plane crashed.
It is believed that he heroically stayed in his cockpit rather than ejecting, in order to protect nearby houses.
