I went to the Sugar Bowl this weekend in New Orleans. First, I drove to my brother's house in Georgia on Thursday. On Friday, we drove to N.O. and watched the Sugar Bowl. The game sucked as Bama got their butts handed to them.

In addition to that, we were tired after the game, so we just went back to the hotel room and crashed. No fun, no pictures....no WIN! On Saturday, we had some breakfast and then we drove back to Georgia.

The only saving grace for this whole trip is that I did manage to get some shots in a couple of places I don't go very often. This shot was taken at the Recycling Center in Auburn, Alabama. There were HUGE piles of wine bottles, beer bottles, beer cans, etc. As soon as I saw this, I thought, "Geeze, these people drink a lot."

It was nice to see so many people (or a few VERY serious drinkers) recycling so much. This was a great facility that made it easy for people to drop off their recyclable materials.

There are quite a few 'scavenger' people in Bangkok who specialise in collecting and recycling garbage.

Sustainable Systems and Green Materials

Sustainable Systems and Green Materials

1) Photovoltaic solar energy system

2) Grey water recycling system - takes water from the -bathroom sinks and showers, and the washing machine, filtering it and pumping it to the fruit trees in the garden

3) Rain water collection system

4) Passive Cooling - uses low windows on the windward side and high windows on the leeward side of the house. Cross ventilation is maximized by eliminating most of the interior walls and aligning windows and sliding glass doors. Ceiling fans are distributed across the ceiling to move the warm air out when there is no natural breeze.

5) In order to reduce the size of the house, we used efficient efficient custom storage system of movable shelves and cabinets runs through the length of the house. This allows for a smaller, but smarter building.

6) Natural Daylighting - uses interior clerestory windows and transoms to allow all of the rooms to borrow light from each other.

Materials

1) recycled flooring for the first structure, patched together and left roughly finished.

2) plywood floors for the second structure

3) Ceilings of both structures are plywood, cut into horizontal boards.

4) Composite decking made of recycled content.

5) All of the Interior doors are made of recycled flooring from the existing house

6) Poured in place concrete countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms, use recycled fly ash

8) Non VOC Paints and Stains

9) All plumbing fixtures are low-flow energy efficient

10) All electrical appliances are energy star rated

-LED and fluorescent lighting fixtures

11) Ductless Mini-Split HVAC system zoned for maximum efficiency

About Me - about.me/edwardconde

So far, our battery recycling program at work has collected nearly 500 batteries. :) This is from the latest batch.

This 1963 Wales + Edwards float was picking up waste paper in Shepherds Bush in June 1987. Probably ex-Unigate, it was last registered in 1989. Of the two cars, the Vauxhall Cavalier was on the road between 1985-98, the Renault 5 between 1985-2000.

I used to visit this area rather too often back then; I bought a Beseler enlarger which got through bulbs at an alarming rate and which were only available at a supplier on the Goldhawk Road. I soon cut my losses and went back to Durst...

This card was inspired by sneak peek #2 heroarts.com/blogs/club/2009/11/13/hero-arts-2010-catalog.... I love the tranquil, natural look of the peek and the gorgeous colours.

I must have been in recycling mode for this card! A while ago a friend gave me books of upholstery fabric samples so I used a couple of these fabrics on this card. The Happy Wishes image is stamped on a linen type fabric using distress inks and the bottom panel is a strip of faux suede. All of the buttons are recycled off old clothes and the twine is recycled too. I used the emboss resist technique on the top panel using white ep and shabby shutters and broken china distress ink. Finished off the card with some machine stitching.

This is one of the two 35m beasts out of three trucks which have been working in Hawkesbury since 2009. Seen here picking up in Richmond on a Tuesday morning with a body almost fully loaded with many 240Ls of recycling. Usual dark green Richards colour, but I found the council livery particularly striking when I first saw it.

Slightly Dangerous, but very beautiful Wall Art. These Angel Wings are not for wearing. The site has pictorial tutorial for the construction of these. Recycle those cans without driving to a junkyard.

A shot of a little courtyard garden in Holt. Pleased to see the old mangle is still in use if only for decoration.

There were two of these recycling trucks operating in Eurobodalla before the new contract commenced in October last year. Both of the Hinos were initially operated by Staples Waste, who was bought out by WSN Environmental Solutions, then SITA acquired WSN. You’ve got a Compaction Systems with the larger body capacity, also featuring the neat and little recycle hopper. Otherwise not the most exciting truck in terms of paintwork, quite a plain appearance really.

Today we recycled our old mountain bikes at a place called Recycle. This is a charity which recycles old bikes and send them out to Africa. My old Raleigh will be on it's way on Friday.

I really enjoy living in Portland. The city is quaint and quirky, and green, in some ways more than others. I am not going to go into too much depth here because I didn't feel like looking up a lot of facts and figures. I didn't feel like looking them up because if someone were to try just as hard in the other direction they could probably find figures and numbers to refute the ones I took all that time to look up.

So I am not going to talk about what percentage of Portlanders use mass transit, or how many bicycles per capita there are. How many green parks we have. Or how efficient our recycling system is. Portland definitely is a green city. Portland definitely also to a certain extent buys into her own hype.

But the truth is, even if the extent is arguable, that this city makes a certain collective effort to stay green. I appreciate that.

Mainly though I appreciate the little things about this city, such as walking down a neighborhood street and being able to stroll through the shadows of trees.

Being able to drive for less than 20 minutes to Forest Park where it is actually possible to walk several miles without hearing the sound of a car.

Being able browse through a farmer's market in downtown.

Bike lanes, I really really appreciate the bike lanes. Lots of them.

And these are just a few. Like I said, I really do not want this to ramble on for too long. In short, this city does a lot to stay green, to be eco-friendly. In short, there is a lot that could still be done. It is not enough to stand around glad-patting ourselves over our past achievements. And yes Portland does this to a certain extent, but it is also still very forward thinking regarding future eco-friendliness.

Honestly though, all that is sort of an aside, I just liked this photo and wanted to post it. I could not help adding a few wandering thoughts to go along with it. I actually saw this while shooting a wedding on a boat (have never done that before). As we were wrapping up I saw these dumpsters and the tree painted on the side of the building and just had to grab a shot of it. I made sure the trim the negatives off of the roll when they were developed as the rest was all wedding shots, and somehow I didn't think this would be a shot that they would have wanted for their album. Then again... maybe they would have.

Ok, dista mucho de los que están bien hechos, pero es un primer intento, aunque creo que no vaya a volver a hacer uno (mucho trabajo :D). Muchas gracias al tutorial de Stefanie.

Has taken a few months but finally finished the 11 large canvasses that will be taking up residence in various places around the UK. The idea with a touring gallery is that it brings art to people in the workplace who may not ordinarily have a chance to visit galleries, providing an alternative to corporate 'art'.

Apart from the paint, the materials used for this project are made from recyclables, plastic and paper, that have been upcycled into works of art.
