"PHOENIX, ARIZONA.- The Heard Museum presents today “John Hoover: Art and Life,” on view through June 15, 2003. One of the foremost Native sculptors, John Hoover eloquently depicts his Aleut heritage in his graceful forms. Nearly 75 works -- carved panels, free-standing bronzes and early paintings -- are featured in this traveling exhibition organized by the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. Featuring nearly 75 pieces by the prominent Alaskan artist John Hoover, Art and Life includes large and small carved panels, free standing bronzes, and some of Hoover’s earliest paintings. Hoover’s work as an Alaskan Native artist is unique because although he lived his early years in Cordova, Alaska, his work encompasses the many styles of other Native regions, both throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. His Aleut heritage is eloquently portrayed in the sinuous sea forms and birds that inhabit much of his artwork. The cedar Hoover uses in his carvings is 1700 to 2000 years old and comes from the forests of western Washington. Cedar flourishes along the rainforest coast of the Pacific Northwest with other conifers. Marine-oriented peoples of the Northwest Coast who lived in or near the great evergreen forests have held the supernatural cedar in the highest esteem. They believe the cedar gave itself to them to help sustain them. They used the wood of the cedar trees to build houses and boats, while the bark was used to weave baskets, mats, clothing, curtains and spiritual objects. The range of subject matter found in Hoover’s sculptures is seemingly endless, but some recurring characters such as birds, mammals, shamans, human figures, Salmon Woman and Volcano Woman can be seen to play key roles. He is fond of certain animals and supernatural beings, and they are central to his imagery. Red-throated Loon is the smallest of the world’s loons (divers), yet in a recurring theme (see my captions for Wilson’s Warbler www.flickr.com/photos/luminouscompositions/53051510458/in... and Green-winged Teal www.flickr.com/photos/luminouscompositions/53066254602/in... ) it is the species that breeds the farthest north. In North America, Red-throated Loon is found all the way up to the continent’s farthest north land on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada. This image shows the red throat and complementary red eye of a breeding adult. This individual was at Boot Lake in the town of Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada — even though it was early June, there was still ice on most of the lake except at the south end.

heath or heathland is a shrubland habitat found on mainly infertile acidic soils, characterised by open, low growing woody vegetation, often dominated by plants of the Ericaceae. It is similar to moorland, but is generally warmer and drier.

Heaths are widespread worldwide. They form extensive and highly diverse communities across Australia in humid and sub-humid areas. Fire regimes with recurring burning are required for the maintenance of the heathlands. Even more diverse though less widespread heath communities occur in Southern Africa. Extensive heath communities can also be found in California, New Caledonia, central Chile and along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to these extensive heath areas, the vegetation type is also found in scattered locations across all continents, except Antarctica.

This is one of the ways Camille tells us she is ready to come inside; she appears at one of several windows with a look like this. We think looking in the windows also contributed to her decision to bring her 4 kittens to our door; we caught "that tabby" staring into our house on at least 3 occasions before she came with family in tow.

The Metropolis Building was built in 1911, symbol of a new artery in Madrid: Gran Vía. Since then, it has been one of the most photographed corners of the capital, a recurring image of the city on postcards and pictures. It was the elegant and modern headquarters of the insurance company "La Unión y el Fénix". It stayed with that name thanks to the sculpture that topped its dome, the emblem of the company, despite what many believe, it is not the one that currently adorns the building.

In fact, what some point to as a phoenix is not. The building, built on the site left by another unique block called the "Casa del Coffin", changed its name and statue in 1972. The Metropolis insurance company bought it and the "Unión y el Fénix" took the figure, the work of the French René de Saint-Marceaux who crowned him until then. Since then, a statue of a "winged Victory" stands on top, however, many still see in it a representation of the mythological animal.

He has a profound interest in the definition of space. Architecture is his recurring frame of reference, while his training in craftsmanship acts both as a tool and an obstruction. Through sculptural means he explores the elements for creating space, which he simultaneously uses as a functional tool for the realized work.

** Exploring the Fairlands *** Fashion Show

Performance by Suoh Agency and Mahasiah Model Agency, a fashion show where each model will present a region through an original style. April 29, 2023

Pel de Gratain representing the region of GIRAPHORIA, Giraphoria ~ Sponsored by The Lost Unicorn Gallery.

Lilia Artis and Haveit Neox have created this region under the auspices of The Lost Unicorn Gallery. Many of the events will take place at Giraphoria, an expression of the ideas, feelings and tunes of Fairelands lovers. Images of thick and fast brushstrokes, with giraffes and butterflies as common threads that will extend through the regions that surround the sim. This sensitivity is so delicate and deep that it is only captured by walking around the sim for a while and noticing the small details scattered everywhere, telling us multiple stories...

Pel, our stylist, has recreated Giraphoria with a fantasy where the two main motifs of the sim, the giraffe and the butterfly, are evident. Butterflies are precisely going to be one of the recurring motifs that are the common thread of the Fairelands this year. Its symbolism of being reborn is very important to you as a Relay For Life support. Elements of !dM deviousMind and Naminoke complete this outfit.

This coast in Tenerife is very special with the specially formed lava flows. When looking closely, they are always like artistic patterns. Together with the moss and the ever-recurring waves awe-eyed. A challenge was to stay dry ;-) because the sea was very wild and the waves unpredictable.

Thanks for all your likes and comments, I'm always very happy about it!

Helen's tower, here I stand,

Dominant over sea and land.

Son's love built me, and I hold

Mother's love in letter'd gold.

Love is in and out of time,

I am mortal stone and lime.

Would my granite girth were strong

As either love, to last as long

I should wear my crown entire

To and thro' the Doomsday fire,

And be found of angel eyes

In earth's recurring Paradise.

A recurring conversation among some wildlife photographers is about doing our best not to cause undue alarm to our subjects.

During our visit to Badlands National Park, after some serious searching, we found four bighorn rams secluded in a shady spot near a hiking trail. One was grazing and the other three were relaxing. Soon, the grazer joined the others lying down and ruminating.

Though we were quite close to them, they were totally unconcerned with our presence. For proof, I offer this shot of one of the rams...dead to the world.

Not the most exciting shot, but I enjoy seeing wildlife resting. Life is challenging for wild critters, and rest is critical for their well-being.

One of the most fascinating aspects of meteorology is its interaction with landforms and geography in general.

A given flow, a given front, a given Low (pression) do not live on their own, but in the interaction they have with the earth's surface, loading themselves with moisture as they cross oceans, seas and large lakes and releasing it when they encounter barriers such as mountain ranges.

The mountain ranges create thermal contrasts and accumulate clouds on the windward slopes (stau), greatly increasing the rainfall on these slopes and limiting it (possible Foehn) on the leeward ones.

The higher and longer the chain, the more these phenomena are exacerbated.

Meteorology, in the interaction of tropospheric dynamics with the earth's surface, generates microclimates, i.e. particular and recurring meteorological trends over small areas which are markedly different (in rain-thermal terms) from the trend that should occur within the climatic belt to which the small area belongs and which differs from the others, even contiguous ones, according to the variations brought about by the orographic variables.

Meteorology is much, much more than the (complex and fascinating) weather forecasts, which "today" are computerized by powerful calculators which, starting from data taken in real time from weather stations all over the planet, issue a series of short and medium term projections on how the meteorological situation will evolve subsequently.

These song sparrows regularly recur along my walk, calling out from branches of just about any bush or vine. Gives me a chance to try different backgrounds! This was along the Willamette near downtown Portland.

I love it along here whatever the weather or time of day. Today was no exception, didn't start out till after lunch as we had an errand to run. Also Hubbie is nursing a recurring back problem so I went for a walk by myself. Not the holiday we had planned but we will make the most of it. Managed to dodge the showers and get back in time for tea. Hubbie had enjoyed pottering about with his new cooking hobby.

In the distance to the right, the little pimple is Win Hill which we climbed yesterday, and you may just make out a rainbow.

Pictures at an Exhibition (Russian: Картинки с выставки – Воспоминание о Викторе Гартмане, Kartínki s výstavki – Vospominániye o Víktore Gártmane, Pictures from an Exhibition – A Remembrance of Viktor Hartmann; French: Tableaux d'une exposition) is a suite in ten movements (plus a recurring, varied Promenade) composed for piano by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky in 1874.

The suite is Mussorgsky's most famous piano composition and has become a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. It has become further known through various orchestrations and arrangements produced by other musicians and composers, with Maurice Ravel's arrangement being the most recorded and performed.

The Haze is a recurring annual problem caused by illegal slash-and-burn agriculture on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.

This was edited for Smile on Saturday's #composite theme today, but I seem to have done it again... It doesn't quite match the criteria. It is a composite, but has the appearance of a double exposure rather than that of an actual 'fantastical' photo. So rather than adding to the group and begging forgiveness, I chose to let it stand on it's own merits. I quite like it...

I also appreciate that other countries have poppy fields and horses... but for me, these two images were representative of our lockdown walks in the lovely British countryside.

Anyway: I wish everyone a very Smiley Saturday, hoping this might raise a smile or two. Definitely worth taking a look at the group submissions today - lots of very talented people out there.

[Also, just a note that some of the group commented that they struggled with the concept of layers or didn't have the software to learn about them. For anyone interested in layers and going that step further, Affinity Photo (AP) is brilliant. A relatively cheap offering - with only one single purchase cost, rather than a recurring annual subscription. And so many brilliant tutorial videos out there... James Ritson is my hero. Never used Photoshop or Llghtroom, but I get the feeling AP is a bit more stripped back to the simple basics that you really need.]

Variations on a theme: Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) aberrations at Cuttle Pool NR

"An aberration is a variation in the wing pattern of a butterfly species which is different in some way to the normal pattern. This can occur as a genetic or environmentally induced variation of the usual form of the species. Aberrations are generally very rare. Some recur on a fairly regular basis and as a result, many have been specifically named."

My apologies for being MIA on Flickr lately. Our family has been struggling with some medical issues. Most were just recurring problems that rear their head periodically and must be addressed. But we also had two that were Covid-related. Things seem to be improving now so hopefully they will be under control by Christmas. Thanksgiving was a bit rocky.

INFINITE – ARSHAD

In memory of my friend Ian, who knew what it was to leave everything behind and start over in a new country with nothing but himself to rely on; whose glass was always half full. It is when we are emptied out and at our lowest ebb, when we find out who we are … even with leukaemia he still had a smile.

DEAR FRIEND

Nothing in this world makes sense

once you've seen what death can do

so many sitting on the fence

like lemmings they all follow you

topple over into mire

rites of passage; burned by fire

imaginings and fantasies

do not compare with what I've seen

eternal dreams; recurring themes

throwback memories; edited scenes

suppress some parts; cuts fall to floor

and slip between the cracks of time

eyes tight shut; toes tapping rhyme

rhythmic; endless echoes fight

within the stillness of the night

yet who will hear you when you cry

perhaps the elusive butterfly

whose wings unfold and flap deep in

the rainforest cacophony of life on earth

and who will hear you on this night

when eternity gives rise to birth

infinity or finite things

look through your glass so darkly

half empty or half full of stings

that cut and hollow out your soul

immortal; mortal; who can tell

the mournful toll of distant bells

maybe it will toll for you

or me or us and we may know

all the answers that we need

all the questions that can feed

our emptied minds; our fullest hearts

to justify our life on earth

too late; too little; I cannot say

for I survived another day …

Lengte trein: 18.48 meter

Bouwjaar: 1911

Vervaardiger: Werkspoor, Amsterdam

This locomotive, called "De Jumbo" appears on the track in 1911 under number SS731, and has been in service for more than half a century. In 1921 he gets the well-known number 3737.

This locomotive has driven approximately 3 million kilometres, making it one of the most successful steam locomotives in the Netherlands. The Jumbo regularly fills in for the newer diesel trains from the 1930s, which regularly do not run due to recurring defects.

The locomotive has twice as much power as its predecessor and is therefore very suitable for express train services.

Because of its size it is nicknamed 'Jumbo'.

The 3737 makes its last regular run on January 7, 1958:

from Geldermalsen to Het Spoorwegmuseum. This is also the last official steam train ride in the Netherlands.

Train length: 18.48 metres

Year built: 1911

Manufacturer: Werkspoor, Amsterdam
