This poster was illustrated by James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960). By the age of 14 Flagg was already a contributing artist for Life Magazine. He studied fine art in London and Paris then returned to the United States, where he produced illustrations for books, magazines covers, advertising and political and humorous cartoons.
This poster, now famous, was inspired by a British recruitment poster showing Lord Kitchener in a similar post. Over 4 million of the poster were printed during World War I, and it was later adapted for World War II . Flagg used his own face for that of Uncle Sam, adding age and a white goatee.
