Affectionately known as the "USS Neversail", USS Recruit (TDE-1) is a 2/3-sized landlocked, dummy warship located at the Naval Training Center San Diego. A Dealey-class destroyer mockup when commissioned in 1949 (the only landlocked ship holding that status in the US Navy), she trained over 50000 recruits a year for 18 years, providing training for shipboard drills and procedures, as well as basic deck and bridge gear. She was decommissioned in 1967 after the US Navy shifted to a computerized system and was unable to classify the vessel, however she was recommissioned in 1982 and converted to a mockup of an Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate. Her purpose finally ended with the closing of the Naval Training Center following BRAC In 1997. Since then she has sat abandoned, awaiting restoration while the Naval Training Center has been converted to a mixed-use development.
