This work was primarily inspired by Donna Haraway’s Staying with the Trouble Making Kin in the Chtulecene. I considered the fluidity that all life has, I was specifically interested in the notion of tentacular thinking: embracing the muddled curiosity entangled in the natural world. A phoenix is mythological yet recognizable, what happens when we disrupt the narrative of a phoenix rising from the ashes? This project was an exploration of recontextualizing elements, blurring the boundaries between nature and humans. I froze these elemental cocktails consisting of: beet juice, chlorophyll, photo fragments, dead roses, laundry detergent, cigarette ashes, lettuce, leaves, cloud ear fungus, and water of course. I allowed for chance, and individual agency to guide the forms of these forms and mixtures that would never naturally occur, an exaggeration of nature's capacity, frozen yet fleeting in the inevitable ephemeral conditions of ice. These phoenix vessels, that are amorphous and could be interpreted as many other creatures, are tropes of Haraway’s concept of ecological narratives, that are filled with nuance, imagination and unpredictable futures. Haraway’s text is concerned with grappling with what it means to live in the present. Working with ice felt like a natural response to capturing the impossible quest of attaining the present, while letting the present exist authentically, the idea of being earthbound.

This is a process photo of one of the iterations of the ice phoenix upon being removed from the silicone mould I created.

The pilot stage of Actors of Urban Change has come to an end, and yet it is the beginning of a beautiful friendship since Actors has already become a vivid network of commited people.

From May 8 to 11, the Participants of the first generation and local guest from the participating cities came again to Berlin to celebrate and show their achievements during the Closing Ceremony in the representative office of the Robert Bosch Stiftung.

This was following in depth workshops, evaluating the respective developments within the teams, projects and the program, which were carried out on the premises of the ZKU - Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik.

Getting back to real urban challenges, May10, was filled with three field trips in different districts of the city to recontextualize the Berlin experience.

Because binary is the linguistic vehicle of the digital, a hunger for aesthetic knowledge has developed leading to a new enlightenment, a post-neocolonialism, and a new art movement: Binary Primitivism. The desire to understand the world has revealed that we have understood the world. And this enlightenment is the lost original, the “primitive.” It must, therefore, be reconstructed and recontextualized with the self-imposed aesthetic of “primitives.” The goal is the identification of isolated target groups and an aesthetic “exploitation” through infiltration and colonization of their digital habitats and communications networks.

Leonard Reidelbach’s installation cruising into becoming is a material, spiritual and social exploration of embodiment. Through an emphasis on touch and intimacy, this work urges you to cruise toward your own recessed desires. The images resting on the surface of these materials build a poetic texture to an alternate world. If you look closely, a pattern emerges which transports the past and recontextualizes itself across time, space and body. These reconfigurations of a moment are colorful pronunciations of an evolving physical reality.

Whaam!, completed in 1963 by American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, is an acrylic and oil diptych on canvas.

Adapted from a 1962 DC Comics panel by Irv Novick, the two-canvas composition depicts an American fighter plane firing a missile into an enemy aircraft, which explodes in a burst of yellow, red, and white, punctuated by the bold text WHAAM! Lichtenstein replicated the style of mass-printed comics through Ben-Day dots, heavy outlines, and flat primary colors, but elevated the image to monumental scale. By appropriating a disposable, commercial image and recontextualizing it in fine art, he explored themes of war, heroism, and spectacle with ironic detachment. Painted at the height of the Vietnam War, the work has been read both as a parody of militaristic bravado and as a commentary on the absurdity of violence.

Tate Modern, housed in the former Bankside Power Station on the South Bank of the Thames, opened in 2000 as London’s principal museum of modern and contemporary art. The building was originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1947 and was transformed for museum use by Herzog & de Meuron. Its vast Turbine Hall and multi-level galleries showcase international art from 1900 to the present, spanning movements from Cubism and Surrealism to Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, Conceptual Art, and contemporary installation.

“Video: Recycled”

Produced by FAR (Foundation for Art Resources)

Feb. 5 – Feb 28, 2011

Opening Reception Feb. 12, 6pm-9pm

D-Block Projects 218 N Promenade, Long Beach, CA 90802

“Video: Recycled” is an exhibition of contemporary video work from artists who find ways to recycle video, film, and printed material that was presumably made for a different intention. The artists in “Video: Recycled” appropriate moving images, recontextualize content, re-examine the aesthetics of video, and address different methods of presentation.

History:

Long Beach, California has a long history of video art, highlighted by the Long Beach Museum of Art that formerly housed one of the largest video art collections in the world. Historically, FAR (Foundation for Art Resources) often collaborated with the museum to contribute to the presentation and creation of video art in Long Beach. FAR would support video art programs such as the “Video Night Series” and other video and film based events. The exhibition “Video: Recycled” continues FAR’s tradition of presenting contemporary and experimental video art.
