The genus Polylepis contains about twenty species that are distributed across the Andes. It is in the rose family, Rosaceae. The genus belongs to the tribe Sanguisorbeae, which mainly comprises herbs and small shrubs. Although the relationship of Polylepis to other genera of Sanguisorbeae is largely unknown, the analysis of Torsten Eriksson et al. (2003) showed evidence of a close relationship between Polylepis and Acaena, which shows tendencies towards having fused stipular sheaths, reddish, flaking-off bark, and axillary, somewhat pendant inflorescences, features otherwise characteristic of Polylepis. There are several characteristics that are important taxonomically to distinguish between species of Polylepis, for example: 1) The amount of leaf congestion, 2) presence or absence of spurs and their size and vestiture, 3) presence or absence and type of trichomes, (4) size, shape, thickness and vestiture of leaflets. The most important taxonomic character, however, is the leaflets.

Studies suggest that repeated fragmentation and reconnection of páramo vegetation, caused by the Pleistocene climatic fluctuations, had a strong influence on the evolution and speed of speciation in the genus Polylepis as well as the páramo biota as a whole.

Amazing reconnection between future, present and the past in the city of psychoanalysis :)

Finding solace in nature through hiking along rustic trails and escaping the chaos of crowded urban areas can be a truly transformative experience. Hiking allows you to establish a deep connection with the natural world, where every step taken becomes a deliberate movement towards inner peace and reconnection.

As you tread along rustic roads, each pathway unveils a unique tapestry of flora, fauna, and landscapes. The simplicity of these unpaved trails stands in contrast to the complexities of daily life, offering a chance to strip away the unnecessary and focus on the essence of existence. The crunch of gravel beneath your feet, the scent of earth and foliage, and the symphony of birdsong create a harmonious symphony that resonates with your senses.

The absence of crowds grants you the privilege of unspoiled beauty. The uncrowded trails offer a sanctuary where you can immerse yourself fully in the surroundings, uninterrupted by the noise and distractions of modernity. This seclusion is not a detachment from society, but rather an opportunity to cleanse the mind and nurture the soul, allowing you to return to the world with renewed vitality.

Being far from the maddening crowd while hiking empowers you to reflect on life's intricacies. Amidst the stillness, thoughts are free to wander, and creativity finds fertile ground. It's a chance to sort through thoughts, aspirations, and challenges while finding inspiration in the natural world's balance and resilience.

Ultimately, hiking along rustic roads in uncrowded spaces is an act of communion with nature, a reminder of the world's beauty, and an avenue to reconnect with your inner self. The journey becomes a metaphorical path leading you back to the essentials, teaching you to appreciate simplicity, and offering a refuge of serenity that can be carried with you long after you've left the trail.

This shot of Pesaro in one form or another has gotten me through many a long cold winter here in Canada, just staring at it transports me back to probably one of our most favorite beach experiences since starting to travel to Italy. Where else in the world can you drink superb wine by the mezza which means half in Italian (0.5l) for around 5 euro while gazing at the sea, not many I think, but to top it all off most beaches usually have an espresso guy pushing around a coffee cart. For me this shot also reminds me that though I am forever keen to take as many pictures as humanly possible while I am travelling you have to also make room for opportunities of rest, relaxation and reconnection.

Sunspots are temporary spots on the Sun's surface that are darker than the surrounding area. They are regions of reduced surface temperature caused by concentrations of magnetic flux that inhibit convection. Sunspots appear within active regions, usually in pairs of opposite magnetic polarity. Their number varies according to the approximately 11-year solar cycle.

Indicating intense magnetic activity, sunspots accompany other active region phenomena such as coronal loops, prominences, and reconnection events. Most solar flares and coronal mass ejections originate in these magnetically active regions around visible sunspot groupings.

A mesmerising stainless steel kinetic sculpture, Shovin Bhattacharjee’s Cosmic Eye can seem like an eye, the sun, a wheel, a globe or even the cosmos, depending on where you stand. A rotating wheel at its core grounds the work, evoking notions of natural cycles and the continuous movement of planets and stars in the universe. Signifying hope, harmony and progress through a meditative and spiritual artistic vocabulary, the sculpture encourages a moment of contemplation and reconnection with our life-force in the midst of the hustle and bustle of life.

THE BLOSSOMING LAKEVIEW

The mural concept is to create an abstracted timeline that incorporates the history and iconography that represents and honours native Mississauga. The mural begins with a green abstracted forest to show the landscape of the area, and transitions to water – flowing across the hoarding and forming into a river. The momentum of the flowing water represents our desire to reconnect with our natural environment. The mural explores humanity’s connection to large bodies of water and the calming effect we feel when we are near them. In almost every culture, water is deeply connected to life; the timeline represents the long journey to reconnect people to Mississauga’s waterfront. The mural features an eagle soaring across the water and acts as a reconnection to the land and water, inspired by one of the native translations of Mississauga: “the eagle clan”. The eagle is a predominant totem and is viewed as a great messenger. In the mural, the eagle is a messenger, soaring across time and reconnecting us to leadership and ideas on the protection of land and water.

Milky Way rising over Troodos Mountains.

This is a location I spotted almost two years ago at the top-roof of Cyprus, at 1900 meters. Last Saturday it was the right moment for this shot - the moon was still in its third quarter but rising at 23:00. The first moonlight was exactly what was needed to illuminate the foreground and this beautiful Juniper tree (Juniperus foetidissima) that proudly stands on the ophiolitic rocks of the mountain.

Geomagnetic Storms

Sometimes during the solar magnetic events, solar explosions hurl clouds of magnetized particles into space. Traveling more than a million miles per hour, these coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, made up of hot material called plasma take up to three days to reach Earth. Spacecraft and satellites in the path of CMEs can experience glitches as these plasma clouds pass by. In near-Earth space, magnetic reconnection incites explosions of energy driving charged solar particles to collide with atoms in Earth’s upper atmosphere. We see these collisions near Earth’s polar regions as the aurora.

The prevalence of specific gases in the atmosphere determines the color of the aurora. For example, if charged particles strike oxygen atoms, the aurora will appear green. Excited nitrogen closer to 60 miles above Earth’s surface will produce a blood red color. Three spacecraft from NASA’s Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) mission, observe these outbursts known as substorms. Substorms can intensify aurora’s near Earth’s poles.

Ahhhh. So many reconnections....albeit little conversations and comments; but more are coming. The Flickr part of my brain is reengaging. What a treat and joy just to hear from people again. Many of you here on Flickr for a few years were such a part of my life...some of the best parts. Making good times better and tough times easier. Sharing joys and hardships made this world better for me.

Working on writing a little "what the heck have I been doing for the last 3 plus years" for an update. The short version is I took a job traveling for a few weeks at a pop - making more money than I ever had for a few months and things lined up (God called) and I ended up in the inner city of Buffalo, NY working at a Ministry for nearly 3 years. It was supposed to be for 6-12 months but God really had other plans.

Back in Central Florida now...years ago I said I would never shovel snow again after I moved to Florida from NY; Never say Never!!!

From the photo archives, I think this one is “of the times”, reflecting social distancing and comfort in our reconnection with nature. Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, near Stovepipe Wells, Inyo County, Death Valley National Park, California circa April 2010

Space appears calm, but it’s not always so.

Sometimes mighty magnetic explosions, just a fraction of a second long, can fling millions of electrons at supersonic speeds. NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale mission has been watching these explosions, called magnetic reconnection, around Earth, and it recently saw such an event behind Earth, away from the Sun.

There, magnetic reconnection was found to fling particles symmetrically, unlike how it does on the dayside. Learning about reconnection around Earth also helps us understand reconnection in faraway places across the universe where it’s impossible to measure directly.

March 12 Launch; Mission

A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket launches NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. The Magnetospheric Multiscale mission uses four identical spacecraft, variably spaced in Earth orbit, to make three-dimensional measurements of magnetospheric boundary regions and examine the process of magnetic reconnection. The rocket flies in the 421 vehicle configuration with a four-meter fairing, two solid rocket boosters and a single-engine Centaur upper stage.

I reviewed my night shoot from March 12 and I noticed a blue cloud that was odd and not moving with the wind. I discovered that it was a rocket firing a booster or a satellite venting gas

Today's story and sketch by me #1284 is about the Badipian named Grrr, you see who crash landed here on the Tropical Volcanic Planet we call Budahunga. Grrr has had a very eventful last two weeks stuck in an endless loop, though many dimensions, thru unknown Galaxies, and deep dark black holes. To finally be spun and spit out of a Stargate between the two Budahunga Banana Palm's you see in today's sketch. The "MCPPOTG" Man Cave Posse Protectors Of The Galaxy, search and rescue team will be on site in a few minutes to evaluate Grrr's mental condition, and if necessary zap him with a Sedation Laser, and transport him or her, to the "BIFTTI", Budahunga Institute For The Temporarily Insane, for memory reconnection with reality therapy. But that exciting story will have to a tale for another time, until then Tata the Rod Blog.

More info:

Two NASA sounding rockets successfully flew over the Norwegian Sea early in the morning of Dec. 8, carrying an experiment to study the electrodynamics of the polar cusp.

The Twin Rockets to Investigate Cusp Electrodynamics or TRICE-2 were launched at 3:26 and 3:28 a.m. EST from the Andoya Space Center in Andenes, Norway. The first rocket flew to an altitude 646 miles and the second flew to 469 miles.

Preliminary data show that the two four-stage Black Brant XII rockets performed nominally and good science data was received from both flights.

TRICE-2, from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, is exploring magnetic reconnection, the explosive process that allows charged particles from space to stream into Earth’s atmosphere. The results promise to shed light on the fundamental process of magnetic reconnection and, in the long run, help us better predict how and when Earth’s magnetic shield can suddenly become porous and let outside particles in.

Excerpt from www.labspacestudio.com: Passage is a collection of projects that respond to the challenges we face connecting to our lakefront in an increasingly urbanized landscape. Embracing the canoe as a cultural and historic icon for exploration, these projects suggest a call to action — a fierce reclamation and reconnection to Toronto’s waterfront and waterways.

Cross sections of a canoe are scattered and divided, immovable and sunken into a concrete scene, mirroring the state of Toronto’s historic portage route that once connected Lake Ontario with the northern Great Lakes.

I didn’t speak aloud. You wouldn’t have heard me from all the way across the pages. But I watched the ducks move like gentle punctuation marks, and in my mind, you were nearby. Just far enough to miss the hush, but close enough for me to write it down for you.

The swan kept gliding past the birdhouse, unbothered, elegant, as if trained in the choreography of quiet evenings. And I thought of you-twilight felt like a soft promise kept.

My hand rested on the arm of the chair, fingers tracing the old scratch in the wood. You’d tease me about things like that-you always notice the smallest things. You'd say it looks like a heart someone gave up on carving all the way through.

I imagine you in that cafe booth you like best, sipping something warm and too sweet, already tangled in tomorrow’s ideas. You're probably wearing that slightly wrinkled shirt that makes you feel romantic, even when you say you're not.

I send you soft goodnights. In the air between this pond and wherever you're tucked away.

I don’t know if you’ll dream about me tonight, but I’ll dream about you - your laugh as punctuation, your breath as narration. I’ll let the evening wind itself down and fold the silence like a note in your pocket.

Happenstance Love Shack

Last Saturday at the Carmel Farmer's Market, the need to reconnect was obvious. There were hardly any masks and there was a sense of joy and happiness in old and young alike. The kids danced to the music and many of the older folks simply sat on the sidelines and took it all in. The reconnection process is underway in some areas much more than others. In suburban areas like Carmel, it's game on. In the central cores of major cities like Indianapolis, not so much. In tiny rural areas, there's often not much opportunity to reconnect. However, humanity has a long track record of resiliency when resiliency seems impossible. I think we'll be okay.

This sculpture is in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and was created byTwin Cities-based artist Angela Two Stars, It is titled Okciyapi (Help Each Other). This sculpture was created in response to an earlier sculpture, Gallows, that was intended to call attention to several public hangings in the United States including 38 Dakota men in Mankato, Minnesota in 1862. The latter became the source of the controversy with many residents finding it a cause of anguish. The original art was dismantled and ceremoniously buried with full cooperation of the artist.

Okciyapi (Help Each Other) is simultaneously a sculptural form, a gathering space, and a participatory work that provides a site for visitors to engage with Dakota language. The sculpture’s ringed configuration of seating elements made from custom-cast concrete makes reference to a rippling drop of water. Inspired by the legacy of her grandfather, Orsen Bernard, and all those working in Dakota language revitalization, the ripple effect represents Dakota language knowledge spreading across generations of speakers. The water vessel in the center serves as a reminder that the name Minnesota is derived from the Dakota phrase; Mni Sota Makoce, the land where the water reflects the clouds. The work incorporates audio, text, and medicinal plants native to the state, which represent a healing reconnection with Dakota language and culture. Navigation of the space represents the artist’s language journey and offers an invitation for the audience to join. Two Stars has conceived of the work in seven sections, representing the Oceti Sakowin, meaning People of Seven Council Fires, known also as the Great Sioux Nation. This group, which includes speakers of the Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota dialects, is made up of the Wahpekute, Wahpetunwan, Sisistunwan, Bdwakantunwan, Ihanktunwan, Ihanktunwanna, and Titunwan. Members of the Oceti Sakowin nations live primarily in areas now known as Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, as well as in Saskatchewan and Manitoba in Canada. Let this be my farewell picture after 15 months in the United States, a time of reconnection with family and friends, a time of work under unforeseen circumstances, in the shadow of a White House lost in "fire and fury", but also a time of discovering jewels of nature and awe-inspiring landscapes through the lens of my camera.
