Pigeons Recognize Human Faces. If you shoo a pigeon, that bird is likely to remember you and know to stay out of your way the next time you cross paths, according to a new study. Researchers found that wild, untrained pigeons can recognize individual people's faces and are not fooled by a change of clothes.
Bear Rocks are a widely recognized symbol of West Virginia wilderness and among the most frequently photographed places in the state. They are a well-known landmark on the eastern edge of the plateau that includes the Dolly Sods Wilderness. They sit in a high-elevation heathland punctuated with wind-carved sandstone outcrops and is home to more than a dozen rare plant and animal species. Situated on the crest of the Allegheny Front, Bear Rocks afford vistas over the South Branch Potomac River. Visibility can extend eastward to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.
The Bear Rocks Preserve is a 477-acre (1.93 km2) tract that is owned and preserved by The Nature Conservancy. Bear Rocks' natural heathlands and open grass balds were originally recorded in 1746 by a survey party that included Peter Jefferson, father of Thomas Jefferson.
Bear Rocks is a remarkably scenic, windswept summit atop one of West Virginia's highest mountains. It is perched on a ridge of sandstone cliffs and is a rock outcropping on the Allegheny Front with a 2,000 to 3,000-foot (600 to 1,000 m) drop below that forms the Eastern Continental Divide. To the east, looking out over the South Branch of the Potomac River, which drains into the Atlantic Ocean via the Chesapeake Bay, there are breathtaking 35-mile (56 km) views where seven mountain ridges are visible on a clear day extending into Virginia. On the clearest days you can see Hawksbill Mountain and Stony Man, the highest peaks in Shenandoah National Park. To the west, water drains into Dolly Sods towards Red Creek, which eventually flows to the Gulf of Mexico via the Dry Fork River, Black Fork, Cheat, Mongahela, Ohio and Mississippi River. Farther north along the ridge of the Front are two more salients, Stack Rocks and Haystack Rocks. - Wikipedia
I'm sure many will! This is a full metal 100% reproduction of that same famous plate. I only wish I had the car! It had a 390 c.i. 325 h.p. V-8 in it with a 4-speed trans. Finding out anything about the carburation has eluded me.
O.K. it appears that I've forgotten most of you were not even born in 1968 when the original license plate appeared in film on the Mustang Steve McQueen drove in the movie "Bullitt". Actually, there were two identical Mustangs in the film. One was used for the very rough driving through the San Francisco streets which included some airborne stunts and minor accidents. That Mustang was thoroughly thrashed by the end of the movie and no one knows what happened to it. The other Mustang, which still exists in all its glory, was salvageable and was restored. That was the one used for most of the high speed open-road scenes.

Recognizing the need for security, Odge ventured into Hweg Shul to the local droid merchant. Though there were many astro-mechs to choose from, an extra set of eyes is what Odge needed, so a protocol droid was what appealed to Odge.
With only a few to choose from, Odge conversed with a TC unit who seemed rather alert and much less uppity than a 3PO-series droid. TC-33 agreed to come to the A-wing build and assist.

Because of You,
~Kelly Clarkson
I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself
Cause my heart so much misery
I will not break the way you did,
You fell so hard
I've learned the hard way
To never let it get that far
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid
I lose my way
And it's not too long before you point it out
I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
I'm forced to fake
A smile, a laugh everyday of my life
My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid
I watched you die
I heard you cry every night in your sleep
I was so young
You should have known better than to lean on me
You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your pain
And now I cry in the middle of the night
For the same damn thing
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I try my hardest just to forget everything
Because of you
I don't know how to let anyone else in
Because of you
I'm ashamed of my life because it's empty
Because of you
I am afraid
Because of you
Because of you
Pick your sauce! National Spaghetti Day on January 4 recognizes that long, thin cylindrical pasta of Italian and Sicilian origin. Usually made from semolina flour, this pasta has been a worldwide favorite for ages and loved by millions.
There are a variety of different pasta dishes that are based on spaghetti from spaghetti ala Carbonara or garlic and oil to spaghetti with tomato sauce, meat sauce, bolognese, Alfredo sauce, clam sauce or other sauces. Spaghetti dishes are traditionally served topped with grated hard cheeses such as Pecorino Romano, Parmesan and Grana Padano.
The word spaghetti is plural for the Italian word spaghetto, which is a diminutive of spago, meaning “thin string” or “twine.”
American restaurants offered Spaghetti around the end of the 19th century as Spaghetti Italienne (which is believed to have consisted of noodles cooked past al dente and a mild tomato sauce flavored with easily found spices and vegetables such as cloves, bay leaves and garlic). Decades later, oregano and basil were added to many recipes.
There is significant debate on the origin of spaghetti. However, we do know that pasta has been consumed for many, many years.
Sung to the tune of “On Top of Old Smoky,” the fun children’s song, “On Top of Spaghetti” was written and originally sung by folk singer Tom Glazer with the Do-Re-Mi Children’s Chorus in 1963.
“On top of spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.
It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door.”
“pain and love have no borders,
even if we raise walls not to see the pain
and we put boundaries to not recognize love.”
(Enzo Bianchi)
“il dolore e l'amore non hanno frontiere,
anche se noi alziamo muri per non vedere il dolore
e mettiamo confini per non riconoscere l'amore.”
(Enzo Bianchi)

All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina (Sicily);
I made photos related to "street photography";
I made portraits of people I did not know, this certainly thanks to their sympathy and availability, I thank them very much;
I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...
For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production.
---------------------------------------------------------
Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate nella cittadina di Taormina (Sicilia);
ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;
ho realizzato dei ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, questo certamente grazie alla loro simpatia e disponibilità, li ringrazio davvero molto;

The Persistence of Memory is a 1931 painting by artist Salvador Dalí and one of the most recognizable works of Surrealism. First shown at the Julien Levy Gallery in 1932, since 1934 the painting has been in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, which received it from an anonymous donor. It is widely recognized and frequently referred to in popular culture, and sometimes referred to by more descriptive titles, such as "The Melting Clocks", "The Soft Watches" or "The Melting Watches".
The well-known surrealist piece introduced the image of the soft melting pocket watch. It epitomizes Dalí's theory of "softness" and "hardness", which was central to his thinking at the time. As Dawn Adès wrote, "The soft watches are an unconscious symbol of the relativity of space and time, a Surrealist meditation on the collapse of our notions of a fixed cosmic order". This interpretation suggests that Dalí was incorporating an understanding of the world introduced by Albert Einstein's theory of special relativity. Asked by Ilya Prigogine whether this was the case, Dalí replied that the soft watches were not inspired by the theory of relativity, but by the surrealist perception of a Camembert melting in the sun.
The year prior to painting the Persistence of Memory, Dali developed his "paranoiac-critical method," deliberately inducing psychotic hallucinations to inspire his art. He remarked, "The difference between a madman and me is that I am not mad." This quote highlights Dali's awareness of his mental state. Despite his engagement in activities that could be seen as insane, Dali maintained that he was not actually mad.
It is possible to recognize a human figure in the middle of the composition, in the strange "monster" (with much texture near its face, and much contrast and tone in the picture) that Dalí used in several contemporary pieces to represent himself – the abstract form becoming something of a self-portrait, reappearing frequently in his work. The creature seems to be based on a figure from the Paradise section of Hieronymus Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights, which Dalí had studied. It can be read as a "fading" creature, one that often appears in dreams where the dreamer cannot pinpoint the creature's exact form and composition. The creature has one closed eye with several eyelashes, suggesting that it is also in a dream state. The iconography may refer to a dream that Dalí himself had experienced, and the clocks may symbolize the passing of time as one experiences it in sleep or the persistence of time in the eyes of the dreamer.
The orange watch at the bottom left of the painting is covered in ants; Dalí often used ants in his paintings as a symbol of decay. A fly sits on the watch next to the orange watch. The fly appears to be casting a human shadow as the sun hits it. The Persistence of Memory employs "the exactitude of realist painting techniques" to depict imagery more likely to be found in dreams than in waking consciousness.
The craggy rocks to the right represent the tip of Cap de Creus peninsula in north-eastern Catalonia. Many of Dalí's paintings were inspired by the landscapes of his life in Catalonia. The strange and foreboding shadow in the foreground of this painting is a reference to Puig Pení, a mountain in the northeast corner of Catalonia.

Perhaps recognizing the photographer from earlier, the conductor of a northbound KCS manifest comes out and gives a friendly wave as his train approaches the State Highway EE bridge at Lanagan, Missouri. The train is powered by five KCS GP30s: 103, 107, 11-, 100, & 111. Today, much of this scene has changed as the second track no longer exists, with a defect detector roughly where the lead GP30 is. The code-line poles have been replaced by mature hardwood trees and the small pond is now a grass field. The photographer and date are unknown. Although, based on the context of the group of negatives, my guess is the late 1960s. Photo was scanned from a medium format negative.

The Ruby-crowned Kinglet, one of North America's smallest songbirds, has a loud, complex song and, with up to 12 eggs, lays the largest clutch of any North American passerine for its size. Males and females are nearly identical in plumage -- olive green-gray on the upperparts with two strong white wing-bars and a broken, white eye-ring. The male has a scarlet crown patch, which is usually concealed unless agitated.
During migration and winter, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet occupies a variety of habitats and is often recognized by its constant wing-flicking. As a breeder, it inhabits spruce-fir forests of the northern and mountainous western United States and Canada. Its nest is hidden, often near the trunk and up to 30 meters above the ground, making reproductive data difficult to gather. Much remains to be learned about the breeding biology and behavior of this species.
The most recognizable landmark in Yosemite, the rock formation was created when glaciers sheared off the valley face. It is however neither a dome nor only half present, instead being a very thin flat formation when viewed in profile.
Half Dome is extremely popular with hikers and rock climbers, and hiking the famed Cable route up the back end had more than 50,000 climbers annually. It has been limited by permit to 400 a day. During the winter, the cables are removed due to the danger. Half Dome is frequently engulfed in clouds.
To the left is the 2000m North Dome.
This photo was taken in the fall, when most of the creeks run dry. The fall colors do appear in Yosemite though, and they add a certain vibrance to the landscape.

The ring-tailed lemur is an easily recognized primate native to Madagascar, characterized by its long, black and white striped tail, gray fur with a white belly, and distinctive "ringed" face with dark triangular eye patches. They are social, diurnal (active during the day) animals that live in troops and use vocalizations to communicate. Unlike most other lemurs, they are semi-terrestrial, spending a significant amount of time on the ground. Their diet consists of fruits, leaves, flowers, and insects, while males compete for mates during breeding season with "stink fights".
Appearance
Tail: Famous for its distinctive black and white striped tail, which is longer than the lemur's body.
Face: White faces with black "ringed" features and dark, triangular eye patches.
Body: Cat-sized with dense gray fur and a white underbelly.
Eyes: Often described as having bright orange eyes.
Habitat and Diet
Habitat: Native to the arid forests and scrublands of southwestern Madagascar.
Diet: Omnivorous, with a diet mainly of fruit, leaves, flowers, bark, sap, and insects.
Behavior and Social Life
Social Structure: Live in social groups called troops.
Communication: Highly vocal, using a range of calls including grunts and howls for communication and to warn of danger.
Grooming: Spend time grooming each other to strengthen social bonds.
Sunbathing: Often seen sunbathing in the mornings with arms outstretched, which is thought to warm their less dense belly fur.
Terrestrial Lifestyle: Spend more time on the ground than other lemur species, moving on all fours.
Unique Behaviors
Stink Fights: During the breeding season, males rub scent glands on their wrists onto their tails and wave them at rivals to assert dominance and compete for females.
Tail Signaling: They raise their tails in the air when on the ground to maintain visibility of the group members.
The firebug, Pyrrhocoris apterus, is a common insect of the family Pyrrhocoridae. Easily recognizable due to its striking red and black coloration, but may be confused with the similarly coloured though unrelated Corizus hyoscyami (cinnamon bug, squash bug) (see comparison). Pyrrhocoris apterus is distributed throughout the Palaearctic from the Atlantic coast of Europe to northwest China. It has also been reported from the US, Central America and India. It has been reported as recently expanding its distribution northwards into mainland UK and eastward on to the coast of the Mediterranean sea. [3They are frequently observed to form aggregations, especially as immature forms, with from tens to perhaps a hundred individuals.

My second attempt at a custom paint-job (sorry for the poor detail quality again). I'm going for a LED-array mask sorta look. My first try at this using a color gradient to black looked a lot better but I realized that Lego is limited to specific colors. They have to use thatching and dot-arrays to create gradients, and I can only think of a few parts in which even those are used (one is actually the purple torso here which uses cross-thatching to add wear to the look without including a new color to print).
So my second attempt used black dots over even-sized dark-red dots to obscure them and force a gradient. Since this is not my final attempt, you can assume I was unhappy with the result.
My third attempt (pictured) shrinks the dots as you move away from the lit portion. This keeps the LED-array look while also adjusting effective brightness. I believe I was able to keep the dots large enough to be printable so I likely won't do a fourth iteration with this specific design. The look may come out better with blue or green though.
Oh, and look, my first minifigure-scaled (ish) car!
Castle Dyck (German: Schloss Dyck) is a moated castle in the Rhineland region of Germany. It is located in the municipality of Jüchen in Rhein-Kreis Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia, between Grevenbroich and Mönchengladbach.
The history of the castle began in 1094 when the knight Hermannus de Disco was mentioned in a record of the Archbishop of Cologne as the lord of a simple fortification. Over time the site was converted into a fortified moated castle. In 1383 the castle was besieged by the cities of Aachen and Cologne, as well as by the archbishop Friedrich III von Saarwerden and Duke William I of Guelders and Jülich. They accused Lord Gerard van Dyck of being a robber knight. When Gerard van Dyck died without male offspring, the castle was inherited by Johann V von Reifferscheidt, the ancestor of the counts and princes of Salm-Reifferscheid. This family owned the castle for more than 900 years until it became the Centre for Garden Art and Landscape Design in 1999. The last heiress of the family, Countess Marie Christine Wolff Metternich, turned it over to a foundation to secure the future of the castle.
The castle is the center of Salm-Reifferscheid-Dyck, a former independent territory located between the Electorate of Cologne, Guelders and Jülich. The small territory was called "Dycker Ländchen" and is still recognizable for its unique cultural landscape.

With a picture of him in the back of my mind, I searched the market stalls with garlic, onions and vegetables - and discovered him promptly and without a doubt. In the photo archive of my smartphone I found the picture from 2016 and showed it to him. Except for gestures to the photo, we found no common language. He seemed embarrassed, but behind it, I hope, there was also special joy.
On an isolated gravel road, the occasional car probably passes this scene by without the people in it giving a second glance. But an old farm veteran quickly spots a trio of items he recognizes from years ago, an old pickup, a glimpse of a red outbuilding in the back corner and a tree that used to welcome visitors turning into the short land but now cut down. As we age, the path of our memories are strewn with reminders that mean little to those who are younger.
While most will possibly recognize this building as the building shown as the headquarters for the special task force portrayed in the TV series Hawaii Five-0, the Ali'iōlani Hale is actually a significant building in the history of Hawaii as the place of the reading of the declaration of the Provisional Government of the Hawaiian Island during the Revolution of 1893. This declaration marked the overthrow of the traditional Hawaiian monarchy and the beginning of government by American interests which eventually led to statehood for Hawaii. The Ali'iōlani Hale is also significant as a fine example of monarchy period architecture but, unfortunately, is not actually the Five-0 Headquarters as shown on TV.
The Aliʻiōlani Hale was designed by Australian Thomas Rowe in an Italian Renaissance Revival as the royal palace for King Kamehameha V. In the Hawaiian language, Aliʻiōlani Hale means "House of Heavenly Kings". The name "Aliʻiōlani" was also one of the given names of Kamehameha V. It was built between 1871 and 1874 and was constructed of concrete block that were cast and fitted to resemble cut stone; a coral foundation supports the concrete block walls. The structure is two stories with a four story central clock tower and has a asymmetrical plan. The structure features lanais with Ionic columns and an arched entrance and arched windows. The interior features a two-story open rotunda with a balcony surrounding it on all sides; the interior has been extensively altered since its original construction.
Aliʻiōlani Hale is currently used as the home of the Hawaii State Supreme Court. It is the former seat of government of the Kingdom of Hawaii and the Republic of Hawaii. Located in the building's courtyard is the famed gold-leaf statue of Kamehameha the Great, who founded the Kingdom of Hawaii.
Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

Lighthouse Haut-Font-Prince is a recognized federal heritage building. The 25.3- meter high tower was built in 1964 on a shoal, which is considered one of the most dangerous in the St. Lawrence River. At this point, the river is about 23 km wide. The building consists of a conical base in the form of a platform, on which is erected a cylindrical tower. It is marked with horizontal stripes red and white.
Its design was chosen because, at this point, the high tide has about 6 m of amplitude. The lighthouse produces every 2.5 seconds a flash of white light visible at a distance of 18 nautical miles. - Wikipedia (I donated; Luv the Wik)

Beaune is a walled town at the center of the Burgundy winemaking region in France. Surrounded by the Côte d'Or vineyards, the cobbled town is renowned for an annual wine auction held at the Hôtel-Dieu (Hospices de Beaune). Recognized by its colorful, geometric-patterned tile roof, this 15th-century former hospital is now the Hôtel-Dieu Museum
Vulnerable identity
The impressive photos of Rineke Dijkstra, often frontal portraits of growing young people and young adults, put the vulnerability and strength of people in development. Her approach results in pictures showing both the social background and the self-image of the portrayed. That can be a boy who joins the Aliens Legion (Olivier, 2000-2003), a girl who strives to perfect her ballet performance (Marianna [The Fairy Doll], 2014), the insecurity and branie of deceased pubs during a club Evening (The Buzz Club, Liverpool, UK / Mystery World, Zaandam, NL, 1995-1996) or just women who experience feelings of pain and happiness at the same time (Tia, 1994, July, 1994, Tecla, 1994 and Saskia, 1994) .
The magistrally composed portraits are a manifestation of universally recognizable truths about humankind as a social being, with all (s) of certainty and life experience. The work of Rineke Dijkstra is known for its beauty and its virtuosity: her striking compositions are created by balancing attitude, detail and coincidence. The photos of Dijkstra are characterized by their technical workmanship and combine the objective view of portrait photography, such as August Sander's, with a striking emotional dimension.
Recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the Watchtower was constructed in 1932. Architect Mary Colter’s design takes its influences from the architecture of the Ancestral Puebloan people of the Colorado Plateau. This particular tower was patterned after those found at Hovenweep and the Round Tower of Mesa Verde. Colter indicated that it was not a copy of any that she had seen, but rather modeled from several.
The view from the Watchtower provides a unique perspective of the eastern portion of Grand Canyon. From here, looking to the northeast offers a distant glimpse of the Colorado River's transition from the relatively narrow Marble Canyon to the north into the much wider, broader expanse of Grand Canyon.
Back Bay Historic District: Back Bay is an officially recognized neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. It is most famous for its rows of Victorian brownstone homes — considered one of the best preserved examples of 19th-century urban design in the United States — as well as numerous architecturally significant individual buildings, and cultural institutions such as the Boston Public Library. It is also a fashionable shopping destination (especially Newbury and Boylston Streets, and the adjacent Prudential Center and Copley Place malls) and home to some of Boston's tallest office buildings, the Hynes Convention Center, and numerous major hotels. The Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay considers the neighborhood's bounds to be "Charles River on the North; Arlington Street to Park Square on the East; Columbus Avenue to the New York New Haven and Hartford right-of-way (South of Stuart Street and Copley Place), Huntington Avenue, Dalton Street, and the Massachusetts Turnpike on the South; Charlesgate East on the West." Prior to a colossal 19th-century filling project, Back Bay was a literal bay. Today, along with neighboring Beacon Hill, it is one of Boston's two most expensive residential neighborhoods.

Boston is the capital city and most populous municipality of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States. It is also the seat of Suffolk County, although the county government was disbanded on July 1, 1999. The city proper covers 48 square miles with an estimated population of 673,184 in 2016, making it the largest city in New England and the 22nd most populous city in the United States. The city is the economic and cultural anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area known as Greater Boston, a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) home to a census-estimated 4.8 million people in 2016 and ranking as the tenth-largest such area in the country. Alternately, as a combined statistical area (CSA), this wider commuting region is home to some 8.2 million people, making it the sixth-largest in the United States. Boston is one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan settlers from England. It was the scene of several key events of the American Revolution, such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston. Upon U.S. independence from Great Britain, it continued to be an important port and manufacturing hub as well as a center for education and culture. The city has expanded beyond the original peninsula through land reclamation and municipal annexation. Its rich history attracts many tourists, with Faneuil Hall alone drawing more than 20 million visitors per year. Boston's many firsts include the United States' first public school (Boston Latin School, 1635), first subway system (Tremont Street Subway, 1897), and first public park (Boston Common, 1634). The Boston area's many colleges and universities make it an international center of higher education, including law, medicine, engineering, and business, and the city is considered to be a world leader in innovation and entrepreneurship, with nearly 2,000 start-ups. Boston's economic base also includes finance, professional and business services, biotechnology, information technology, and government activities. Households in the city claim the highest average rate of philanthropy in the United States; businesses and institutions rank among the top in the country for environmental sustainability and investment. The city has one of the highest costs of living in the United States as it has undergone gentrification, though it remains high on world livability rankings.

I'd recognize those shoes anywhere! They belong to none other than my dear friend and partner in photography adventures, Anita! LOL She insisted the shower cap was not a shower cap but raingear because it came with some other camera stuff she bought. I maintain that it is nothing more than a shower cap. But then, at the end of the day, her hair was dry and mine was not! She never did fully explain those bright blue gloves though. No matter where we go or what we see, I can always depend on this lady to add the Sparkle to our adventures! :D Oh and I confess, when we were sitting in the atrium just outside the Orchid room, I introduced her to an employee as my friend from France. He seemed quite impressed and politely enquired of her how she was enjoying her visit..... yes, I did eventually set him straight! LOL Only he knows what he was thinking at this point!!
The most recognizable part of the gondola is the intricate “ferro”, or prow decoration. It has a complicated symbolism, beginning with the “S” shape which represents the sinuous Canal Grande. The six teeth under the main blade symbolize Venice’s six “sestieri” neighborhoods, and the single tooth jutting out backwards, the island of Giudecca. The curved top signifies the traditional hat once worn by Venice’s “doge”, or governor, and the semi-circular break between the curved top and the six teeth symbolizes the Rialto Bridge. Some “ferri” also have three friezes between the six prongs, for the islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello.
Grote Bonte Specht jong 040617(1*) - Juvenile Great Spotted Woodpeckers can be recognized by the large red cap; adult males have a smaller red cap and adult females do not have such caps. This one fled the nest only a couple of weeks ago.
North Shore Silverliner 740, perhaps someone recognizes the location?
Original slide in my collection, photographer unknown.
Recognize these? Yep...the same Cosmos from my last post! I desaturated these...they are a fairly dark lavender and I'm not too fond of the shade. I prefer the lighter ones!
I'm sorry, but I can't remember whose texture I used here. Naughty me!
Have a wonderful day, my friends!
When it comes down to scale modeling with Legos a lot has happened over the last years. Its more and more recognized as a true scale modelers medium, and I think that is great. About three years ago I decided to build more different things then only the trucks that I had built so far. I built Harley Davidsons, Hot rods, and started with trains.
After the two big 1:16 scaled American diesels, I thought it would be nice to have something dynamic for events: A true scale locomotive on actual Lego rail gauge. I opted for the Union Pacific Big Boy: (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_Big_Boy).
There are already many models of this type of locomotive but I wanted one for myself as it has always appealed to me since I was a kid. I did some math calculating back from the Lego track gauge, coming to a 1:38 scale.
Building such a big locomotive to run on Lego rail is a bit of a challenge. I had to deal with the following facts:
-The standard Lego curve is too tight for such a long locomotive. Therefor I choose the Radius 104 aftermarket rail.
-The wheels are not existing as such. In diameter 45 mm there is nothing available from the shelf. I worked together with Jaap Kroon to design and 3D print a set of custom wheels. To make it look more realistic I chose to add the valve gear as well. We designed the valve gear with Lego compatibility in the back of our heads. It should not become too fine compared to the bricks.
-Power. This thing is heavy. And it has a lot of batteries to add to the weight. The solution was three genuine Lego Power Functions XL engines directly geared to the axles of the tender. I chose the tender to push the locomotive as it was much more convenient to house the engines and batteries there. In order to get all the ‘juice’ to the engine I chose a regular RC Battery pack and the Tamiya connector was hooked up to a PF cable. To control it I mounted a SBrick, so there is no restriction of battery power in the whole system.
-Lights. I wanted to add some realistic lights as well. Initially I wanted a smoke generator but the proper 5V kit was not available anymore, so I dropped it (for now). Rob from Brickstuff.com supplied a very cool lightkit for the locomotive.
It includes a dimmer for the contour lights. All in all there is about 2 meters of wire in the locomotive. It took me about 2.5 months to finish.
