My love of art, especially animation, whether it is in film, gaming or comic, is the reasoning behind my application to Barnet and Southgate’s Art and Design course. I am especially interested in pursuing a career in animation and would like to concentrate on character design. I want to do a creative course as that is where my abilities are strongest.
I would like to attend Barnet and Southgate College as I feel the college has a more relaxed creative atmosphere which will enable me to progress onto my next course. A wider introduction into art and design will be offered as all of my attention will focused on what I am most passionate about. Unlike traditional sixth forms, I will be immersed into independent learning, more in line with what I expect to experience at University which can only strengthen my career path in the future.

Art is a passion of mine that I would like develop it into a career and the area of animation and computer aided art is a field I am particularly interested in. I choose this course rather than traditional A levels to develop a wider range of skills in art and design with which I would like to build a foundation on which I can then base my career on. After this I finish the course at Barnet and Southgate College, I would like to go on to Staffordshire University or Teesside University for a BA(Hons) in Concept Art for Games and Film. These are two photographs depict both street art and promotional design in an urban environment. These images I took served as a good stepping stone in the development process of my vintage posters. The use of subject placement in correlation to the text on the flyer was a big insight towards that style of print. Both pieces above sit upon very rough backgrounds, this in turn created an illusion of dotted original texture; something I used for my letterpress and pyschedelic posters.
Portfolio statement: Growing up in London, the majority of my art reflects the diverse cultural heritage everyone in the city is constantly surrounded by. From the world class music scene, to the thought provoking street art, my work feels very connected to these aspects of the city. The majority of my portfolio consists of work I have developed over the last few months. Over this time I have truly learnt the value of color and text, specifically in accordance texture.
Graphic design is a subject that utilises many forms of artistic method to communicate a message. I feel my chosen portfolio consists of a good variety of mixed media that is required. Across the last several months, I really left my comfort zone in regard to the art I created; prior to this I found myself either simply sketching half finished pieces or taking the same types of photographs without much context or value.
However, since discovering graphic design to be it's own art form with clear contextual reasoning, I have completely adjusted the approach to my work. I feel I am learning something new everyday across all spectrums, whether this relates to improving my observational sketching techniques or understanding the design potential of a tool on illustrator. I have made design part of my daily routine, yet despite this, I know that there is so much more to learn, and my portfolio shows this. It is for this reason that my willingness to study graphic design is so driven.
