Sound level measured at my listening position using a Radio Shack SPL meter. Source was a CD of test tones (sine waves) downloaded from the folks at Real Traps. This only covers the bass range, from 20Hz to 260Hz. That's only about 3.7 octaves, or around 37% of the audible spectrum.
So, this isn't too bad for a single-position in-room response. The speakers are much smoother than this in free space; all the bumps and dips are due to interaction with the room. Resonant modes cause bumps or dips depending on where the microphone is located. Simple reflections from nearby boundaries can also have both effects.
This week a Velodyne DD-12 subwoofer will be arriving. If nothing else, it should be able to lift up the bottom end of the curve so that the output from 16Hz to 40Hz is about as high as the rest. That may not seem like much but it's a large and very important job.
The other thing it will do, is create graphs like this automatically (I had to write down the SPL reading at all 240 frequency points, then type them into Excel, for this graph; and that was only at ONE microphone position). It has a microphone, a sweep generator, an on-board computer, and a video output to display the results on your TV. Though, it will only graph up to 200Hz. The primary function of that is that it aids in setting up the sub, picking a location, adjusting the levels and on-board EQ settings. It will also be extremely useful when I begin fiddling with acoustical room treatments, seeing any changes in the bass region in real-time.
