This section of Wi Hwy 42 at the tip of Door County Peninsula is quite possibly the most photographed section of roadway in the state. It looks quiet now but believe me it was anything but when we were there last week. When we arrived, there were already a half-dozen vehicles pulled off to the side to view and shoot, people in the middle of the road dodging near constant traffic. We waited and waited, finally five left and we leapfrogged the remaining one to grab this quick shot before a new vehicle leapfrogged in front of us. It was not a completely clean grab, there was a vehicle at the far end that I erased. Same with a power line, but I left the mailbox and realtor sign.

I have seen a few of this scene and most all take out the power line but the verdict is split on whether to leave the mailbox.

New Adventures In Old Beijing

We've been staying in Beijing for over a week now is this shabby little apartment right across from the north wall of the Forbidden City. Today's photo is only a few minutes walk from our front door. Even though there are giant rats living in the ceiling, huge brown slugs sliming all over everything, and pipes breaking open to spew stinky brown goo, the location couldn't be more perfect. If I was a Realtor, all I'd say is, "It has character."

What you see here is the north entrance to the Forbidden City shortly after a beautiful sunset. On my second night in Beijing, I jogged the length of the top half of the ancient wall to find some cool vantage points. When I returned here to shoot, there were dozens of little bats fluttering all around my shot. They were a cool audition to the experience and they moved too quick to impact the exposure.

The collapsing Washington Hotel in Sharon Springs. (Since this photo was taken the Washington has been demolished.)

I'm sorry I have not been on flickr very much lately. I have been enjoying a fun and busy July. Things should settle in a week or two and I will be happy to come visit my contacts (whoever is left) when I can.

I got an email from one of the local realtors on Monday morning about a cat that he had been seeing out at an abandoned property he is in charge of. At first he thought it might belong to one of the neighbours, but he saw it a few times and became convinced it was part of the property. So I spent a large part of Monday investigating this property and then trying to find and/or trap this cat he told me about. I could see that the property does indeed appear to be abandoned, possibly the people who lived there were evicted for nonpayment of mortgage. It is very unkempt and there is junk lying around in a lot of places. I never saw the cat or any sign of it, and I knew I was going on a road trip for two days for Tuesday and Wednesday so at the end of the day, around 9:30 pm when I packed it in, I left a big dish of food out for the cat.

After I returned on Wednesday I drove out to the property and the food had been partly eaten. I tried trapping that day, but didn't catch the cat. It actually worked out quite well since this property is only 8 miles from my parents' place, so I would set up my traps and then go hang out at my parents' place, then I could go check the traps every couple of hours. With my niece visiting from Three Hills, I would have likely been driving out to their place every day anyways. I did finally see the cat on Wednesday and got a few pictures of it. I tried approaching it, but it ran away, far and fast. On Thursday I saw it again when I first was at the property setting up my traps. When I went back 2 hours later to check the traps, viola! I had caught the cat! It isn't feral, but it does seem to be afraid of me. It had obviously been in the trap for a bit of time, because it had eaten the entire can of cat food that I had put in for bait. It didn't try to run, but was very quiet in the car. It sniffed my fingers when I carefully put them near the cat. I think it is used to people but would prefer to be away from people.

If it is not very tame, I may just try to relocate it to a different farm home (which is occupied and can provide life necessities). However, I will wait and see for a few days. I have seen cats like this before that have turned out to be friendly once they get to know you. I'm sure the cat hasn't been struggling too much to survive. There are a lot of mice and birds and even insects around, but come the winter it wouldn't have much of a chance. Also, without any people around there is a greater risk of predators getting the cat.

UPDATE: She is now spayed and has been staying in my feral cat crate in the basement. She is not feral; I can pet her though she doesn't seem to like it very much. She loves treats so I am using that to my advantage. I will likely be moving her upstairs to the main bathroom soon so I can work with her more closely.
