So get this, I came across this book while I was walking back to the media tent. It caught my eye, but it was covered in mustard and catsup. So while I was getting ready to shoot AM Taxi, a clean copy of the book was near the stage. This time I took it home. Ironic much?
The Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine lies a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean, on Sunset Boulevard in Pacific Palisades, California. It was founded and dedicated by Paramahansa Yogananda, on August 20, 1950.

For Jorge it was a time to celebrate: “We are happy, very happy. We are so many, as many as needed to affirm with confidence that this is reality. Who is not overjoyed by the fact that we have arrived in Acapulco? We are 100 delegates come from 30 countries with our experiences and energies to show and share among ourselves. Such a conference could not be organised in a Latin American country? This one is a proof of the contrary.”
And he went on to emphasise that they had won their battle against the Guadalajara authorities: “In Guadalajara the local authorities…. forced us to cancel… the conference … They won momentarily, but did they really win? The subsequent positive polemic that ensued, the visibility we gained, the credibility we got, cast a doubt on “their victory”; and anyway, despite all this anti-constitutional, immoral and shameful abuse, the conference is being successfully carried through in Acapulco.”
Here is the full text of Jorge’s speech:
“Finally we are here. The XIII ILGA Annual Conference is being successfully carried out. We are happy, very happy. We are so many, as many as needed to affirm with confidence that this is reality. Who is not overjoyed by the fact that we have arrived in Acapulco; we are a hundred delegates coming from 30 countries, with our experiences and energies to show and share among ourselves.
Such a Conference could not be organized in a Latin American country? This one is a proof of the contrary.
This Conference is an event that surpasses mishaps, gives us courage and lifts our spirits up. It has made possible the arrival of many Lesbians and Gays from North America and the European continent in a Land where Lesbians and Gays defend their existence and their Civil Rights undergoing unheard of difficulties, under the greatest legal and social vulnerability concerning their Rights. Yet this also brought us closer to what we have experienced and to what we struggle for.
For the first time, Nicaragua, Equador, Perú, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, our brothers-sisters the Chicanos- Chicanas, and the latin residents in the United States and of course Mexico, are present here. It is very important to stand together.
In Guadalajara, the local authorities and a small group of "neocristeros” forced us to cancel the realization of the Conference there, they did not want it to happen because they considered that such a meeting was impossible. That is to say, that it was not possible for Lesbians and Gays to meet to practice their Rights. They overlooked our Rights and we had to cancel the Conference.
They won momentarily but, did they really win? The subsequent positive polemic that ensued, the visibility we gained, the credibility we got, casts a doubt on "their victory"; and any way with all this anti-constitutional, immoral, and shameful abuse, the Conference is being successfully carried through in Acapulco.
All these participating women and men from so many countries in spite of the incidents on the Conference; all these presences to tell us we are not alone, to tell us that we never again will be alone, and that they came to affirm with us that the defense and guarantee of our Civil and Human Rights is a very serious matter, that we shall validate and protect in Mexico and the whole world.
Latin America, we are here to sum up our achievements and our strengths, and we may say that the cancellation in Guadalajara left us with a positive "balance sheet".
In the first instance, the deepest ratification from all the manifestations of support received from many Guadalajara inhabitants who, like us, live on the edge of their citizen's rights. In the second instance the great feeling of gratitude for the treatment we have received in Acapulco. We have been amply proven right here, and have verified that we are not mistaken, that there is a civilized Mexico respectful of our Rights and that has gone along with us since the emergence of the Homosexual Liberation Movement. Here they have paid attention to us, given us support, and in the town, actions supporting the best possible development for the Conference have abounded. Lastly and in the third instance, as a result of these events today the eyes of the world are turned towards this Conference. On the lookout of what may happen concerning our Human and Civil Rights, the great interest shown by the media to divulge our struggle's obstacles and progress is not of least importance. As the President of the National Human Rights Commission Dr. Jorge Carpizo would say:
"Human Rights are not only a legal and humanitarian question, but also a moral and ethical imperative: The struggle for their best defense is a social strength that nobody can hold back any more".
Fortunately Dr. Carpizo's position, is no longer an isolated voice in today's Mexico; it reflects many voices in our country that since a long time ago have put and are putting pressure towards the constitution of a society where no human group may be excluded from its Rights.
With dignity, we, Mexican Lesbians and Gays, are part of this struggle, and the Conference being inaugurated here confirms that we are within the changing wind to overcome old repressions that for a long time denied us our condition as human beings and citizens.
Believe us, we will never keep silent again in claiming the Rights we are entitled to. We are here, we shall be there and everywhere to defend and guarantee these Rights. Thank you.”
