For those who wonder.. yes, yes I'm running out of my holiday photo's of Laos. My holiday seems already a long time ago. Luang Prabang, does it still exist, or was it just a hazy dream I conjured in my imagination? Luang Prabang, the royal capital of the former kingdom of Laos, is a lovely quiet town. located between the two lazy rivers, the Mekong and Nam Khan river. Life flows slowly here, just like the muddy Mekong. The people are gentle and unassuming.

Photo taken at the morning market of Luang Prabang. I fastly caught a glimpse of this old Asian man. Don't know if he noticed me, but one shot was all I got before he turned around and start eating his meal. All camera sounds OFF, 432mm zoom, spot metering, F3.3, 1/100s and ISO200.

Our last day in Luang Prabang we were strolling down the Morning Market. A good place to go for food and entertainment. There are hundreds of temporary and semi-permanent shops, stalls, and blankets spread on the ground, where everyone buy and sell almost anything. Here the hill tribesman or woman comes face to face with the modern western traveler in a milieu strange to both of them. But nonetheless the strangeness seems to handle with a broad smile. Inside the market I caught a glimpse of this old man. Later I realize, looking at his dirty clothes, he must have been homeless.

He was just receiving a free meal from a local market restaurant. It was the first homeless we saw in Laos. I guess there are more homeless in Amsterdam than in Laos. Although Laos is a poor country, being homeless is ofcourse another story. But let's not forget a generation of War and the Politburo of the Communist Party who came to power. In 2005, the United States established Normal Trade Relations with Laos. Looking at his intriguing face I'm sure this man have quite a story to tell.

Quoting from the back cover:

"The most daring show ever presented. That's what the sign on the circus wagon said. And daring it was -- in more ways than one. For in addition to the undraped feminine beauty that was promised the wagon contained a group of desperate people in whom hope and fear, courage and cowardice, love and lust were waging a bitter, remorseless battle. The show was about to start . . . "

Neil Paterson's novel was the basis of a 1953 American film "Man on a Tightrope" directed by Elia Kazan, starring Fredric March, Terry Moore and Gloria Grahame. It was entered into the 3rd Berlin International Film Festival. Paterson based his true story, which first appeared as the magazine novelette "International Incident," on the escape of the Circus Brumbach from East Germany in 1950. Members of the Circus Brumbach appeared in the film version in both character roles and as extras.

From the back cover:

THE REAL STORY OF CARNIVAL LIFE

Behind the glittering carousels, the screaming laughter of the fun house, the plaster kewpie dolls, the dancing girls in scanty costumes, is the throbbing, colorful world of the people who make the carnival.

This is their story, a story of twisted emotion, false pride, love and hate. It moves at a furious pace, from the boardwalk side-shows of Coney Island to the cow-pasture circuit, revealing the real, behind-the-scenes picture of the carnival world and its people.

It is a real story and it is a bit long. It happened this morning when I went to work. I hope you will read this if you have a few minutes.

First of all, I should mention that the story has nothing to do with the above picture which was taken in one of the JR platforms.

OK, here it goes.

As usual, my wife and I were taking the MTR (Underground / Metro in Hong Kong) to work. In the congested carriage, I was standing behind a man who I think was about 26-28 years old. A girl wearing a skirt with lace was standing in front of the man.

At Station A, I noticed that the man was using his fingers to rub against the underside of the laces of the girl's skirt quite vigorously. At that point there was no body contact. Just his fingers and the laces of her skirt. I didn't say anything then as I could not tell whether the man and the girl were couples. I only pulled my wife away from that man.

All along the journey from Station A to the next stop Station B (about 2 minutes), the man was rubbing the laces. When the MTR stopped at Station B and was about to open the doors, the man pressed his body against the girl and used his fingers to lift up the girl's skirt. He then tried to grab or at least touch the girl's bottom. The girl evaded a bit and the man proceeded to make his exit. I then confirmed that the man was a stranger to the girl and what he was doing constituted indecent assault.

There was a sudden urge of power within me. I chased the man out of the carriage and grabbed his shoulder. Without saying anything, the man tried to make his escape. There was a struggle between us for 10 seconds before I used my right foot to tackle him and pressed him against the wall in the process. I yelled at his face "Don't ever deny what you just did. You indecently assaulted the girl". He of course denied. I challenged him "So why you struggled and made the escape if you have

done nothing".

At that point, there were many eyes (from within the carriage and on the platform) on us. I asked for someone to call the police but no one actually did anything. The girl never appeared on the platform. I restrained the man for another minute before 2 MTR staff on the platform came to us.

I told them what I saw and we were led to the control room. Police came a few minutes later and I gave them a brief statement as to what I witnessed. At the end, the police said the case against the man is weak because the victim never came out and made her complaint. They assured me that they would teach him a lesson but would not press charges against the man. They thanked me for what I did.

As a lawyer myself, without the need of being told by the police, I knew the man would not be convicted because it is very difficult to prove beyond reasonable doubt with my eyes as the only piece of evidence. But sometimes we do not need a criminal prosecution / conviction to teach those perverts a lesson. I think and I hope the man has already been taught a lesson today.

Love has no boundaries, when you love someone, you love them, no one can stop you. The story of two incredible men whi have inspired many and that’s why we asked them to share their story with wedchief.com and we are loving all the happily ever after pictures.

So, here’s #Realstory of Milan & Jai

Milan Thakrar works as a Business Development Manager at Historic Royal Palaces, whereas Jai Kotecha works as a Managing Partner at Ogilvy UK. Jai proposed Milan in Las Vegas. Both being first generation born in the UK Indian Heritage they’ve had a number of personal obstacles they’ve had to overcome. Although society has embraced LGBTQ relationships and same sex marriages. The Indian community it’s a subject that’s widely spoken about. Both having gone through the notions of coming out to their family and friends, there still remained the fear of what people will say and how it may impact their family. The fear of society remained. However, there comes a point in your life where you have to stand up to the idol gossip, fear and put yourself and the person you love first.

Jai & Milan feel incredibly lucky to have had such a supportive family who have been with them for every step of their relationship. Prior to their wedding they faced several challenges with the community at large. Both of them were determined to have the wedding day they both dreamed of and not be afraid of the backlash. Jai & Milan were respectful of their culture and parents during every element of the wedding day. They chose not to have a Hindu ceremony however, to mark our wedding nuptials the two of us flew to India last year where they carried out prayers in the holy city of Vrindavan where Hindu God Lord Krishna was born, on the banks of the holy river Yamuna.

However, after having the most incredible wedding day, the challenges continued as they discovered that someone from the community decided to share images which were taken from various social media platforms. The images were sent with a caption stating ‘ First Gay wedding in the Lohana community in the UK…’ via whatsapp leading to a viral message being sent across the community including to their parents and extended family. Many of their friends have told them their parents have received the message and it’s been circulated on various family WhatsApp groups. These messages were not only circulated in the UK but India & Africa. Unclear of the intentions Jai &Milan felt very venerable not knowing how the community would respond. However both of them have been flooded with messagesof support and in some cases gratitude from others that both of these men have taken a bold step to break the boundaries and allow other LGBTQ Indians to not live their life in fear and be happy.

The Wedding Journey…By Milan & Jai

Date of wedding: 07.09.2019

We walked over to the Banqueting House from Corinthia where we were staying with our families. We made our way to the Undercroft for a group photo before moving up to the Main Hall for more family photography by the Throne displayed in the space as well as on the balcony overlooking the space.

Meanwhile, our guests began to arrive and were seated in the Undercroft ready for the ceremony, after being greeted by the Royal footmen and a receiving line of our siblings.

We decided to walk down the aisle together accompanied by a dohl player.

As we entered the nerves settled as we were welcomed by an eruption of cheers and applause. We were truly overwhelmed by the love in the room. The atmosphere in the room was uplifting and there was a sea of smiles and tears of joy.

As we were announced husband & husband we walked down the aisle to the Beetles track All you need is love! We felt it was the perfect track to celebrate our union.

After the ceremony, we led our guests upstairs to the Main Hall where Royal Footmen were waiting to open the doors and give that real ‘wow’ moment for guests as they entered the space and lifted their eyes to the beautiful Reubens ceiling. We enjoyed exotic welcome cocktails which included cucumber, elderflower, and ginger Collins, and lychee, lemongrass and rose. in the first half of the Main Hall, before the Royal Footmen called us for dinner and we moved to the second half of the hall for dinner.

Once our guests were seated we cut the cake; created by Unique Cakes by Yevnig the five-tier ivory royal icing cake stood tall under the throne canopy. With gold leaf accents and piped floral swags, the cake also included our monogram to complement our stationary.

The starter was then served by Blue Strawberry which included Kasundi paneer tikka, spicy aubergine and Pani Puri filled with whipped daahl with fresh mint and flowers.

Our two best men (our older brothers) then made their speeches

Our main course was then served which comprised sharing dishes including green pea and paneer tikka masala, dhal makhani, gunpowder jeera aloo with lemon and mustard seeds and achari bhindi.

We then made our thank you speech to our friends and family before asking everyone to make their way back downstairs to the Undercroft which had been transformed for the afterparty. The room was dressed in modern black and gold themed furniture and bars.

There were dessert stations including a Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Station and a selection of treats such as white chocolate aero with salted flaked almond praline & kaffir lime syrup, Golden Ferrero Rocher rolled in gold honeycomb and raspberries with peanut caramel, salted peanut crumble & raspberry pate de fruit all displayed on Tetris shelving for guests to enjoy throughout the night.

For late-night snacks, we chose to have a cheese station and layout array cheeses from Truffle Waterloo and vegan cheeses for guests to enjoy towards the end of the evening.

On departure, every guest received a slice of wedding cake which was beautifully boxed with a bespoke label on it that stated– ‘A sweet ending to a new beginning’

Choosing The Perfect Venue

Being a Londoner Jai always wanted to get married in the heart of city. When visiting Banqueting House with Milan, Jai instantly fell in love with the venue, especially the Rubens ceiling, it’s grandeur and its history. Banqueting House is the last remains of Whitehall Palace, once the largest Palace in Europe. Some of the most famous monarchs have hosted lavish parties and masques and hence why it is known as ‘party palace’! Therefore, both Milan and Jai felt it was the perfect venue for their wedding.

The layout. We wanted to have our ceremony and reception in the same venue however also have a different ambience and styling as the evening went on. We wanted a romantic and tranquil ceremony, but also wanted to party later on. The venue was perfect for what we wanted, The Undercroft and Main Hall were dressed in three different ways. We had our ceremony in the stunning crypt followed by a drinks reception and dinner upstairs in the Main Hall. While guests enjoyed dinner the Undercroft was transformed into a cocktail lounge perfect for desserts and dancing Located in the heart of London, the venue is surrounded by our favourite London landmarks. Located on Whitehall the venue was also very easy for our guests to find.

The Wedding Dress

We wanted to wear something that represented our Indian heritage however, also had a contemporary look. Therefore, our outfits were designed by Milan and custom made by a designer in London. Each of our outfits (Sherwanis) represented our own individual personalities, Jai’s was bright and energetic and Milan’s was sleek and stylish. The outfits complimented each other by having antique gold thread work and mint green French knot embroidery woven into both Sherwanis.

The Decor & Color Scheme

Again, we wanted to incorporate our Indian heritage into the design of the wedding. However wanted to ensure it was executed in a modern and stylish way. Therefore our theme was regal with pops of colour. The majestic Main hall was the perfect backdrop to incorporate elements of majestic India. The drinks reception resembled luxury palaces of Rajasthan with gold guilted poseur tables and bar stools accompanied by Great Hire’s Santa Monica furniture with bright cushions and stunning Jewel tone florals by Simon Lycett.

The Main Hall was split in half by Umbrella’s which enhanced the vibrant Indian theme.

For the dinner, the colour pop theme continued. Contrasting use of light grey linen, gold & grey chandelle chairs with Mirror tops were the base for the explosion of colour with different napkin colours placed around the table, accompanied by high and low arrangements in rich and regal shades to compliment the Rubens ceiling. Each guest also received a personalised gold mirror acrylic name place created using our monogram design.

Evening Entertainment For The Guests

To add the wow factor to the party we hired the Mirror Men to roam the Undercroft and entertain guests during desert and on the dancefloor. We also chose DJ Vish from Musical movements for our evening entertainment who perfectly kept everyone on the dancefloor with a diverse range of music including popular Bollywood hits and classic floor fillers!

We chose not to do a first dance however, we were surprised by Milan’s siblings and cousins who performed a flash mob dance which kick started the dancing. This also added an additional element of the entertainment for the evening.

Honeymooning Like No One Else

We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon. We were away for 3 weeks and explored 2 islands across Hawaii(Kuai & Maui) it was pure heaven! We flew the day after, which was amazing as we were still on cloud 9 and buzzing from the wedding.

Last But Not The Least, Tips From Jai & Milan For All Soon-To-Wed Couple Out There

Our advice would be to absolutely enjoy the day as it flies by so quickly. Soak in your surroundings, you’re getting married in a palace! Allow your guests to enjoy the venue and it’s history. We wanted our guests to enjoy the magnificent Ruben’s ceiling and therefore, included elements that allowed them to view the ceiling whilst enjoying their dinner, for example we chose to have mirrored table tops so guests could see the ceiling from their table.

Get to know your suppliers – they are there to help and support you during the planning stages – we met with our caterers Blue Strawberry several times to share ideas, discuss menus and of course went for a tasting. When it came to the wedding day they knew every intricate detail of what we wanted.

Trust the events, team. Jess Davies who was our event manager on the day helped us to plan every detail and worked with all the palace suppliers to coordinate the running of the day. It couldn’t have been smoother and we were able to relax and not worry about a thing.

I was in a NYC cab when a driver asked me:

"Where are you from?" I said: "You guess ?"

He replied: "Never heard of this country" :-)

I saw the upper image on the Star-Tribune newspaper site, and couldn't quite believe my eyes. A health plan provider? Suggesting, in their advertising, that teens reading muscle mags featuring steroidal body-builders is a good thing, health-wise? Maybe the picture was just cropped weird for web advertising, I thought.

So I clicked through to the site advertised, www.medica.com/realstories

And it's a feature image.

Would they have done this with teen girls looking at a fashion magazine? It's the same kind of problematic expectations...

I don't necessarily think that fashion magazines, or fitness magazines, cause body dysmorphias. But I do think they are symptoms of some problematic social expectations. And I also do think that it is not responsible for a nominally-health-related organization to be suggesting that that kind of physique is one that adolescents should want to "improve" towards.

Of course, there's no way to contact Medica through their website. So I guess I'll call them on Monday or something.

(Note on copyright: I do think my use of these images is fair use. I don't think I've necessarily added much expression by collaging them together. So the default "All Rights Reserved" setting doesn't work for me, AND I don't think the Creative-Commons license is particularly well-grounded (because in either case, I'm not claiming any rights in the images themselves). Feel free to use the images without crediting me, if you want. Your ability to make use of them is probably subject to independent fair use analysis.

Why yes, I am a copyright lawyer, how can you tell?)

A photo for Tarek Rabaa symbolizing his demand for freedom as he is a victim of torture and a plot to decredibilize the cellular data records used by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to reach those who assassinated the ex prime minister Rafic al Hariri in 2005 in Beirut.

On the photo it is written in Arabic, i born free and i want my freedom.

Tarek is in jail since July 12, 2010.

Dozens of banners were raised in Beirut in November 2011, in the district of Tarik al Jadidah to express the objection of the families on the defamation campaign, Al-Manar TV has launched against the engineer Tarek Rabaa who is in custody until today. This TV belongs to the Iranian party in Lebanon, the so-called Hizbullah, who is using a brilliant engineer as a shield to evade the international court which accuses four persons affiliated to this party to assassinate the ex prime minister Rafic al Hariri. The cellular data registry was used to reach the killers, thus the so called Hizbullah in collaboration with the Military Intelligence selected Tarek Rabaa and they torture him because he was saying No to their plot. The plot was to decredibilize the data calls by pretending that Tarek was collaborating with the Mossad to manipulate the data. It has been revealed that Tarek is certainly innocent but he is still in jail since July 12, 2010.

On the banner, it is written in arabic "Your accusation is politicized, biased and malicious based on media propaganda without any evidence or confession".

Someone rightly said that, “Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. “

Love is one such thing which you don’t have to find or struggle for, you get it when the right person knocks your door. Love is the most special feeling in the world and the people you fall in love with becomes suddenly important. Why are we saying this?

You will understand when you’ll read #REALSTORY of Shruti & Nilay

According to Shruti, it’s a long story… so, we will directly take you to the point where they met.

The words of bride

We both are distance relatives so we knew each othe that way but never ever spoke or met with each other. Time passed and when I came in 11th standard, both of us took admission in same college and that’s where all started.

We started as a friends, that’s how all start and gradually we became best friends, that’s how it continued for a year and half, then one fine day Nilay proposed me. I was not sure but if I would have rejected his proposal, our friendship would have also ended and therefore I finally said “Yes” because I can never see him in pain or worry and somewhere I also used to feel same about him.

And that’s how both of us started dating, Now, I am a company secretary and Lawyer and Nilay is a Chartered Accountant, we both are living are “happily ever after” life in Dubai.

The Wedding Planning

We are staying in dubai so we Of course didn’t even get too much time to go and choose our wedding outfits and venue or plan for our D-Day. Both of our’s brothers and their wives did everything for us. Infact our wedding decoration was a surprise for us as well. Nilay’s brother is into event management so, he did everything possible to make the occasion the most special one.

Engagement

It was a ring ceremony, tht was the most magical moments for us which we were waiting for 10 years. Nilay sat on his knees and gave me my dream ring.

In wedding we had functions as below

Mandap muhurt

It was the traditional function where by I decided to go for saree as I didn’t wanted to repeat any style.

Haldi Function

Haldi was the most favourite function, I wanted it very natural and lit. The decoration and everything was theme based, all people wore Yellow colour clothes, my all friends were there and we enjoyed it a lot.

Sangeet

My sangeet was the best function so far, I am a dancer myself and I wanted to dance in my Sangeet like never before, We didn’t have a Pre wedding shoot, therefore we used all our photographs of 10 years for the decoration and the theme was Bollywood theme The decoration was on point, My entry was like fairy tale it was a dream come true.

Wedding day

We were ready on time therefore we could enjoy our each and every function so well, I didn’t cry at all in any ceremony because I was the happiest bride you could find.

On March 19, 2012 the friends and family of Tarek Rabaa gathered in front of the politicized military military court in Beirut to stress on releasing Tarek. Rabih Rabaa gave a speech which had been broadcased on Almustaqbal TV, criticizing the fear of the prime minister Najib Mikati from the so called Hizbullah and he demanded to immediately release his brother.

The family of the engineer Tarek Rabaa has synchronized a protesting movement with the session of listening to the so called witnesses in the military court. The session had been postponed 7 months just for political reasons. Tarek's trial is unlawful and he is a victim of torture and falsified spying case.

On April 4, 2012 the LBC television visited Tarek Raba's family in the district of Tarik al Jadidah in Beirut to listen to their opinion regarding the release of the spy Fayez Karam.

The sadness is obvious on the faces as in Lebanon, nowadays, the equation has become reversed, the innocent Tarek in jail while the spy Fayez Karam is out.

Moreover, the family has knocked the doors of all politicians in Lebanon to explain the case of their son, but they have closed the doors as Tarek is not a prominent person who can brings for them votes during the election.

This is a photo taken from a TV screen on March 3, 2012 showing the photo of the Tarek Rabaa and the logo of Al-Manar TV on the top-right of the screen. The so called Hizbullah selected this timing for re-slandering Tarek for 48 hours in order to make pressure on the military court to keep this engineer in jail. The court session was scheduled to March 19, 2012 but it has been postponed to September because of this TV.

I have seen this film yesterday by random - I have completely forgotten this real act of heroism that was accumplished by three young american tourists in the Thalys train going to Paris, the 21 august 2015. What I have liked is that the heroes are playing their part themselves ! I had to read it to believe it. Bravo to Clint Eastwood who did this film, and bravo to him for all the other films he made. My favorite is Mystic river.
