Close-up shots of the six standing stones from the new Stone Circle in Rickerby Park, Carlisle, 18 September 11.
All of the stones are hewn from rock found in the catchment area of the River Eden: Kirkstone slate, Shap limestone, Penrith sandstone, Lazonby sandstone, Shap granite and millstone grit. The work was commissioned by the Eden Rivers Trust and was funded as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
The circle is located by the River Eden at the eastern end of Rickerby Park near Brunstock Beck, a short walk to the south of the parking area (approximate map ref: NY412568). The inscriptions on the stones can be read by viewing the image full size.

This was my first sighting of the completed installation, and I just love it!

'Heron and Fish' (1995) by Vega Bermejo.
Description: Large sculpture, over 2 metres high, on the north side of the canal basin. The piece depicts a heron with a very large fish hanging from its beak.
Commission: One of the pieces made during the ‘Stone City Symposium’. Financial and other support was given by the Sports and Arts Foundation, Yorkshire and Humberside Arts, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield City Council and Yorkshire Artspace Society. Materials were provided by Realstone.
This piece was sponsored by a number of organisations with interest in the Victoria Quays development: The Monaghan Partnership, Nabarro Nathanson, New City Hotels Ltd, The Rushbond Group, Sheffield Development Corporation, Victoria Quays Ltd, Wilson Bowden Properties.
The piece was made ayt Victoria Quays between 19th June and 16 July 1995. Surface details were completed in the artist’s studio during a week in August. This piece was installed on 31st August 1995.
Artist’s Statement: (from the publicity leaflet for Stone City) “This piece celebrates the natural fauna which will hopefully return to this city centre location.”
