PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center student Pvt. Michael Odoms, Marine Corps Detachment Monterey, reads from the book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street by Dr. Seuss to children at Foothill Elementary on March 1 in celebration of the 108th birthday of the famous children’s author and artist. Marine volunteers have been visiting the school regularly since Jan. 2011 to tutor and mentor Foothill students, assist teachers with paperwork, library duties, physical education, and recess. To date more than 240 Marines have given a total of more than 4,000 volunteer hours to the school.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - On March 1, Marines from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center donned their dress uniforms to assist Foothill students in celebrating the 108th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s birthday by participating in Read across America. Since Jan. 2011, DLIFLC Marines have volunteered more than 4,000 hours to tutor and mentor Foothill students, help teachers with paperwork, and assist with library, PE, and recess.

On March 2, 2018, FDNY Paramedic Jillian Cox, of EMS Station 43, and Paramedic Kim Marshall, of EMS Station 22, participated in Read Across America at Brooklyn Public Library’s Brighton Beach Branch.

On Friday, March 9, 2018, after celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday in a week-long Read Across America event, students who participated in a reading challenge at SAS Elementary School were recognized and rewarded with certificates and medals at an assembly. Top readers also got a chance to try their hand at pie tossing. The target? Dean Mrs. Smith! What a good sport!

Seventh grad students read Dr. Seuss books with first grade students as part of Red Cloud Indian School’s celebration of ‘Read Across America Day.’

 

The National Education Association mission is to build a nation of readers through its signature program, ‘Read Across America.’ Now in its 17th year, this year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources.

"READ ACROSS AMERICA"

 

Across the country, thousands of schools and community centers participate by bringing together children and books for "READ ACROSS AMERICA" .

 

This nationwide reading celebration takes place Feb 26th - March 2nd. During this week all of our K-3 students learned about the renown author Dr. Seuss, read his books, discussed the purpose of each book, enjoy a special read aloud "The Cat in the Hat" from the assistant director of academics, and was visited by a special guest.....
