Last week we gave two teams of Theatremakers from the Open Exchange Network the opportunity to create a piece of work at the Exchange. It’s a chance for them to explore and develop the way they make work. Using the illustrated children’s book THE RED TREE by Shaun Tan as inspiration, the focus of this REACT is to create an age specific piece for children aged 10 and under. #RXREACT

REACT (Relatives Education and Coping Toolkit) is a self-help package for relatives and friends of people in the first stages of mental health problems associated with psychosis. To avoid a ‘medical’ feel to the toolkit, Cultivate defined a friendly, illustrative style and a bright colour scheme; making for a more appealing and engaging user experience.

Pictured: A Belize Defence Force (BDF) is reacts to simulated enemy fire whilst being mentored by a British Army instructor during a lesson to BDF troops at Hattieville Training Area on 22 May 2016.

Soldiers from the North West of England have been in Central America passing on training techniques to their counterparts in the Belize Defence Force.

Â

Personnel from the 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancasterâs Regiment are helping the BDF ensure its future junior leaders become great trainers in their own right.

Â

Working out of British Army Training Support Unit Belize at the countryâs Price Barracks, and nearby Hattieville Ranges, staff from 2 LANCS Dettingen Company delivered patrol tests, navigation skills and mapping techniques to 36 BDF soldiers each with the potential to become a junior non-commissioned officers (JNCO). But all that was secondary to ensuring the soldiers learn how to teach their skills to others.

Â

Captain Danny Shal, from the BDF training team, said: âThis is where it all starts for them; where we teach them things they need to know as soldiers. It is the start of a career path that could take any of them to the role of Sergeant Major.â

Â

Demand to get on the British-run course was high â 50 applicants were turned away. Captain Rogelio Ramirez, Officer Commanding the BDFâs Training Company, explained why: âWe have a lot of partner nations who come and assist us with training, but our doctrine is based on the British Armyâs so your training is relevant to what we do. Also, because of the operational commitments your guys have done, we are now seeing how that doctrine needs to be updated.â

Â

The work takes places in humid conditions and temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius. Lt Josh Sanders, the 2 LANCS officer in command of the training team, said: âThe standards we expect from the BDF candidates are exactly those we would expect if we were running this for our own soldiers in the UK. What weâve been able to deliver here has exceeded our expectations because we share the same basic Army doctrines.â

Â

Brigadier General David Jones, Commander of the BDF, has worked hard since his appointment in 2012 to strengthen the military links between the two nations. Through his meetings with senior British Army staff and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, British Army training programmes are now being re-established in Belize.

Â

Brig Jones said: âWe have a lot of operational tasks that we have to maintain. The best way we can achieve success in those is by giving our soldiers the best training opportunities, and I believe those are through the British Army. Our soldiers have been instructed by our own JNCOs, but the instruction they get from the British is different; the British have served in different operations and conflicts to our personnel and their experience is what we need. Our soldiers enjoy this training, they say itâs very professional and theyâd like more of it.â

Â

As a result of this early success, further British Army supported courses are planned for later this year and 2017.

Â

Capt Ramirez concluded: âItâs very beneficial for our soldiers to be working with the British but itâs also beneficial for the British too: we offer great experience of operating in the jungle â even the most junior soldier has been posted there.â So, while the eight-strong 2 LANCS Dettingen Company training team are carrying out their teaching role, 120 of their colleagues from the battalionâs Blenheim Company are undergoing their own five week tropical test â learning jungle warfare techniques from the BDF trainers.

You make me feel out of my element

Like I'm walkin' on broken glass

Like my world's spinnin' in slow motion

And you're movin' too fast

Were you right, was I wrong

Were you weak, was I strong, yeah

Both of us broken

Caught in the moment

We lived and we loved

And we hurt and we joked, yeah

But the planets all aligned

When you looked into my eyes

And just like that

The chemicals react

Here is a series of images that start with a histology specimen that is then mashed up with a floral photograph. The microscopic view is a specimen of a human wound that is reacting to the injury and starting to heal. Small multilobe cells are “poly’s” (polymorphonuclear leukocytes, neutrophils) which are the body’s basic defenders against injury and bacteria. Small dark mononuclear cells are lymphocytes, immune defender cells. The large dark nucleus cell is a monocyte-macrophage, the trigger or coordinator cell which turns on the actual repair or healing process. The elongated spindle cells are migratory angiocytes, vascular cells which are arriving and reassembling into flowing blood vessels (a tubular capillary with red blood cells is seen in cross section in the right upper corner). The colors of the specimen come from the standard histology stain H&E, hematoxylin and eosin.

The flower picture shows the goldenchain tree, Laburnum x watereri ‘Vossii’ (a hybrid between primary species L. alpinum and L. anagyroides). The laburnums are members of the pea family Fabaceae. The original species are native to southern Europe, but the beautiful hybrid (Voss’s laburnum or the waterer laburnum) with its hanging chains of yellow flowers, has become popular worldwide. This picture scanned from old film is not technically or esthetically sound, but when the colors are inverted (the colors as they appeared on the original color negative), they bear a resemblance to H&E stained microscope slides. This prompted a mashup between the flower negative and the wound histology.

Six views are presented: the original histology (1a), a derived painterly version (1b), the original flower positive print (2a), the original flower negative (2b), a mashup of the flowers and microscope using the original pink-orange-purple palette (3a), and another mashup using logical transforms to alter the palette (3b).

Obviously I'm not saying these are great pictures but I thought they illustrated the fact that when a hare is lying down in its form ( below ) they're almost invisible but as soon as they stand up and start moving you can literally see them from a mile away. Needless to say I don't have access to either of these fields, grrrrr..........the hares are just impossible here, too few of them and too many people and dogs that have made them so shy, I'm only really going to try and protect them from all the idiots. Dunno about anyone else but I've found carrying a camera with a long lens on it gives you an odd kind of power, it's immediately obvious when someone's up to no good by the way they react to it ! Yesterday a guy was walking his dog towards me along the edge of a field and when he saw the camera he actually turned round and ran away !!!!! I think the dog walkers think I'm some kind of madman and they might be right.......persevering with these impossible hares I mean.....

React-Reflect-Respond

This is a unique exhibition curated by Perth Museum & Art Gallery to support the touring exhibition Tim Stead MBE: Object Maker and Seed Sower. From January to May 2015 this major touring exhibition is on show in Perth and React Reflect Respond is showing in the adjacent gallery.

This was a candid shot at a Home Depot; surprised he didn't even react to such a close shot as this camera makes an announcement of each shot with a rather obnoxious shutter CLICK! But he was busy deciding on the proper tool needed. (Reminded me of a bit older Hulk Hogan!)
