reactable

- Exhibition PLAY ADMONT - Admont Library 2010 - curated by Christine Peters und Michael Braunsteiner -

reactable is an electronic musical instrument with a revolutionary interface that turns music into a tangible and visual experience. Several people can play the instrument simultaneously by moving different acrylic objects on its surface, turning them and combining them with each other. While the instrument is being played, these objects light up and the synthesized music becomes visible on the surface. The state-of-the-art technology combined with a simple and intuitive design enables the user to experiment with sound, change its structure, control its parameters and be creative in a very natural and direct way.

Last week we gave two teams of Theatremakers from the Open Exchange Network the opportunity to create a piece of work at the Exchange. It’s a chance for them to explore and develop the way they make work. Using the illustrated children’s book THE RED TREE by Shaun Tan as inspiration, the focus of this REACT is to create an age specific piece for children aged 10 and under. #RXREACT

Various Artists, Activists and Scholars

Wednesday 6 - Friday 8 November, 9:30am - 5:30pm

Various Locations

Across Dundee

This year, the NEoN Digital Arts Festival is very pleased to organise an expanded 3-day symposium entitled, Re@ct: Social Change Art Technology. NEoN Re@ct will involve over 30 international speakers over three days addressing a diversity of issues and practices engaging activist digital art.

Many artists involved in digital arts have historically been prompted to react and respond to local, national, global, social and political crises (i.e. around issues of environmentalism, gender equality, exploitation, colonialism, militarism, emancipation). Re@ct will be a platform to critically examine the relevance and impact of past and present practices, theories and strategies – to engage an uncertain future through an exploration of the creative potential of digital art.

The Re@ct symposium will be a unique, open and freely accessible event. REGISTER HERE

Augusto Giacometti - "Nuit Etoilee" (1917)

Au-dela des Etoiles - Le Paysage Mystique de Monet a Kandinsky

"Seeking an order beyond physical appearances, going beyond physical realities to come closer to the mysteries of existence, experimenting with the suppression of the self in an indissoluble union with the cosmos… It was the mystical experience above all else that inspired the Symbolist artists of the late 19th century who, reacting against the cult of science and naturalism, chose to evoke emotion and mystery. The landscape, therefore, seemed to these artists to offer the best setting for their quest, the perfect place for contemplation and the expression of inner feelings.

Thus the exhibition, organised in partnership with the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, explores the genre of landscape principally through the works of Paul Gauguin, Maurice Denis, Ferdinand Hodler and Vincent Van Gogh, but also presents North American painters such as Giorgia O'Keeffe and Emily Carr, who are less well known in France. Contemplation, the ordeal of the night or of war, the fusion of the individual with the cosmos, and the experience of the transcendental forces of nature, are stages in a mystical journey the exhibition invites you to take."

Landscape received scant mention in Symbolist circles although the Impressionists had embraced it as a subject and invented a new style of painting focusing on the tangible world.

However, some artists chose to address their spiritual inquiries by depicting landscapes.

Against the backdrop of the rise of Positivism, which prioritised scientific experimentation, and in a world experiencing significant change, artists were pervaded by a form of idealism and began to question their own origins, religious culture and the relationship between man and nature. Nature became the locus for soul-searching, culminating in mystical experiences.

Mysticism was widespread in the late 19th century and this phenomenon is a feature of all religions and beliefs, offering a means of accessing the mysteries of existence through oneness with nature. This exhibition aims to analyse how mysticism influenced landscape painting at the dawn of the 20th century, paving the way for the birth of abstraction.

The sections of the exhibition reveal works by artists from diverse cultures who are exploring the transcendence and immanence of nature. The first section, which is underpinned by Monet’s aesthetic experiments, introduces visitors to the work of art as an aid to contemplation.

However, many artists use the motif of the landscape as a starting point to express their aspiration to mystical experience, including the Nabis, who found the theme of the sacred wood conducive to meditation. The second section explores the notion of the divine in nature in greater depth through works belonging to the Synthesist, Symbolist and Divisionist movements. Their iconography draws on Christian and Pantheist tropes.

In the third section, vivid and original paintings by Canadian artists from the period 1910-1930 tell the story of the North in pictures influenced by the natural world of Scandinavia. Landscape also reflects actual or internalised night in the fourth section, which is luminous in the case of Van Gogh, or melancholic and tragic when evil makes its presence felt.

By contrast, the mystical painter Dulac paves the way for the universal. The final section addresses the forces which transcend man and draw him to the realm of the stars: the cosmos and its interstellar light. This visit aims to reflect what Kandinsky describes as “those seeking for the internal in the external”.

React, Respect, Intersect was created by two professional artists and a team of youth artists as part of the Groundswell Community Mural Project’s flagship Summer Leadership Institute (SLI). SLI teams spend seven weeks during working with artists and community-based organizations, learning job skills and creating public art throughout New York City. This mural depicts a utopian environment where vehicular traffic, pedestrians of all ages and abilities, bicyclists, skateboarders, and animals respectfully share the street. It focuses not only on traffic and pedestrian safety education, but also site-specific themes and cultural diversity.

The safety education focus of this mural was informed by workshops lead by NYCDOT Safety Education. The artists and youth artists researched safety issues near the mural site which influenced their final design. Speed of vehicular traffic, high levels of carbon dioxide in the air, and the need for all modes of transportation to respectfully share the streets are just a few of the themes beautifully integrated in to this mural.

During Q&A, a lady in the audience asked if Amy ever called any of her fans. Amy paused, and said yes, once, and she related the story. A fan wrote and said she was involved with an abusive boyfriend. Amy had only an address and chased down the woman's phone number and called her.

The woman replied, "That was me."

Mudpots, or paintpots, are hot pools of thin to thick muddy material consisting of clay-sized grains of clay minerals mixed with varying amounts of water. Rising gases result in bursting bubbles of mud at the surface. The clay forms by chemical weathering of rhyolite lava, a common lithology in the Yellowstone Hotspot area. When rising hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S), exsolved from subsurface magma, reaches the top of the water table, oxidation occurs and sulfuric acid forms (H2SO4). The sulfuric acid reacts with the rhyolite, forming various clay minerals. Mudpots in Yellowstone tend to have thin mud in boreal spring and early summer and boiling-type bubbles appear at the surface. In boreal late summer and autumn, the mud is thick, which alters the bubble surfacing and bubble bursting behavior of rising gases.

Pocket Basin Mudpots consist of several mudpot-rich areas west of Rush Lake & east of the lower River Group in Yellowstone’s Lower Geyser Basin. They are named after the Pocket Basin Crater just west of the mudpots area. Pocket Basin itself is a large depression formed by a hydrothermal explosion near the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age (see pp. 727-729 of Muffler et al., 1971).

GLOBAL CINEMA CAFÉ PRESENTS A FREE SCREENING OF

From the 'Burg to The Barrio

A film by Susan Ryan

at the Princeton Public Library, Community Room

Sunday, March 24, 2013, at 4:00 P.M.

What happens when a beloved urban community changes? How will a previous generation of immigrants react to a new group with a different language and culture? From the ‘Burg to the Barrio, a 45-minute documentary video, explores the challenges facing the community of Chambersburg in Trenton, New Jersey. Long recognized as the “Little Italy” of Trenton, famous for its Italian restaurants, bakeries, and groceries, the ‘Burg is also a well-established working -class neighborhood where Italian families lived in close proximity to local businesses and to each other.

Today, the ‘Burg still attracts newly-arrived immigrant families, but this time they are from Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and other Latin American countries. Italian bakeries continue to bake bread and pastries daily, but they operate alongside bodegas and restaurants that cater to the Latino population. From the ‘Burg to the Barrio shows an ethnic neighborhood in transition with all of its tensions and contrasts as differing cultures meet. By juxtaposing archival footage and photographs of the old Chambersburg with contemporary scenes of community gatherings, festivals, and interviews, the video shows not only the differences, but also the many common dreams and aspirations as residents trying to live their lives and preserve their neighborhood. Although the film takes place in New Jersey, the issues facing the community will resonate with viewers everywhere.
