[Today, we are going away for a few days for a family reunion, so there will be no more uploads from me until at least Sunday evening, perhaps Monday morning. Thank you very much.]
As you may know, my primary source when preparing a trip to discover the most fascinating Romanesque monuments in France (and elsewhere) is the Zodiaque collection of books, published between 1950 and 2000 by the Benedictine monks of La Pierre-qui-Vire in Burgundy, under the ægis of (and with photographs by) my mentor Dom Angelico Surchamp, osb. The Languedoc roman volume in that collection mentioned this isolated church of which I had never heard but which was conveniently located right next to the spa resort of Lamalou-les-Bains in the département of Hérault.
I say “conveniently” because, to tell you the truth, the real, primary purpose for which I drove down to Languedoc in November 2022 was not to photograph Romanesque churches (although that would obviously be a welcome complement), but to bring my beloved Revox B77 Mark II tape deck to a competent “fixer” who lived in a village not far from Lamalou. Months ago, I had stupidly broken one of the façade switches, and now the sick boy had to be taken to a healer to be fixed. And while the artisan was doing his thing on the Revox, I got to drive around and see beautiful old stones...
Back to the main matter, the church we are visiting today was built on the remains of an early Christian sanctuary built around the late 300s on the Gallo-Roman site of Rhèdes (traces of it have been found by archæologists). Then, in 551 (there is a most rare written trace), a new church was ordered to be built over the primitive one by “a King of France” whose name is not mentioned —and of course, “France” did not exist as such at that time.
That church was then donated to the Benedictine abbey of Villemagne at a date unknown, but it is mentioned in the last will and testament of Guillaume, viscount of Béziers and Agde († 990 AD), and again in 1153 as a priory of Villemagne.
Stylistically, the church we see today belongs to the First Romanesque Art of the 11th century, but there are indications of an earlier construction date for some parts of it, probably around Year 1000 or even before that milestone. It is a simple yet ample church, very old but beautifully preserved and restored, with none of the absurd excesses of the 19th century. It has been listed as a Historic Landmark since 1880 and the acoustics are so good there are many concerts of all kinds of music during the Summer season. It has been deconsecrated at some point but I haven’t found the exact date.
The western door.

[No postings for two days: I drove down to the Bas-Languedoc area of France to have my Revox B77 MKII tape deck fixed by a good craftsman I know there, and I used the time I had to spend there while the repair was being done to visit and shoot a few more Romanesque churches... I am back and posting again!]
The monastery of Ganagobie in Provence (former département of Basses-Alpes, now Alpes de Haute-Provence) was founded around 960 by the bishop of Sisteron, a town located 30 kilometers to the North, on land donated by the bishop. It was soon affiliated to the abbey of Cluny, then ruled by Abbot Mayeul. Thus, Ganagobie went down in History as a priory of Cluny.
The Romanesque church we can see today was built around 1100 and the priory was very prosperous until the 1400s. It was, unfortunately, completely devastated during the Wars of Religion between Catholics and Protestants between 1562 and 1598. It remained largely abandoned until the 19th century, when it was rebuilt, as the stones had been left on the site.
In 1898, splendid Mediæval floor mosaics that had been forgotten for centuries and buried (and protected!) under a layer of soil were re-discovered and the priory church was listed as a Historic Landmark.
Since 1987, Benedictine monks from the abbey of Hautecombe in Savoy have settled in Ganagobie again, and the priory has become a full abbey, counting around 20 monks today.
Here you can see the gorgeous mosaics around the altar... Too bad they were off-limits, I would have loved to photograph them, but as I said, the abbot in Ganagobie was not at all accommodating, contrary to what I had come to expect from religious establishments throughout France...
For testing porpouse of my newly adquisition Nikkor 5cm f3.5 I choose one of my audio system.
Turntables:
Garrard 401 with SME 3012 and Ortofon/Bockrand 12"
Thorens TD-125 with TP25

I love music as much as photography, always vintage BTW, and this system gives me hours of daily pleasure. I couldn´t live without it.
And this excellent lens, the Nikkor 5cm, will be also a thing to be close to. Thanks for reading.

The apse. Judging by the general lack of decoration of the church, I think that the construction “by a King of France” is more a legend than anything else: obviously, the financing was not abundant, but some details were treated with a lot of care and skill, such as this refined and unusual recessed central window in its own “mini-apse”.

To conclude this series on the priory church of Rhèdes (and to close for now the chapter on Romanesque Languedoc), I upload these two photos of the apse: one of them showcasing its beautiful proportions and understated harmony, and one taking advantage of the terrain to show a level closeup one doesn’t often get to admire (our last one of the kind was at the abbey of Gellone).
I hope you have enjoyed this first series on Languedoc. There is of course a lot more to discover in that part of southern France that borders with Spain (not to mention in Spain itself!), but that will have to wait until some other time... In order to be able to upload photographs to Flickr, one must first travel and go shoot them! :o)

The northern door or porte des morts (“Door of the Dead”). The coffins of the deceased would be carried out through this door after Mass, as the North is symbolically the province of the dead. Cemeteries were often to the north of churches, although they even oftener had a tendency to spread around as time passed...

The colonnade in the apse.
[Today, we are going away for a few days for a family reunion, so there will be no more uploads from me until at least Sunday evening, perhaps Monday morning. Thank you very much.]

The western façade. I managed to keep the perspectives straight, however at the price of unsightly proportions. There is, unfortunately, no way to avoid this, as the church sits on a backfilled terrace overlooking the modern cemetery, and there is simply no room to step back.

In the early 1980's, I was a member of a small group at school called the "Recording Unit". We provided music and sound for school dramatic productions (for which the machine of choice was always the Revox A77) and were also tasked with recording radio programmes which were to be used in lessons. I remember performing this last task using one of these Ferrographs.
