Voor de rit wordt de tram van Milwaukee gebruikt. Gezeten op de omklapbare rotan banken van motorwagen 846 is er volop tijd om het nieuws van de dag door te nemen. Om te genieten van een frisse wind vanaf de Great lakes kunnen de ramen ver open. Het traliewerk beschermt de passagiers voor een val naar buiten.

This imposing palace was built by Rao Raja Ratan Singh Hada between 1607 AD and 1631 AD. The entire palace is an aggregation of separate buildings constructed by successive rulers over time, but to the eye they appear as one whole in perfect harmony.

Rani Padmini palace, situated inside the Chittorgarh fort, leaves behind the tincture of beauty, valour, sacrifice, honour, manoeuvre and tragedy of the past. Padmini was the second wife of the brave and noble king of Mewar, Rawal Ratan Singh and the daughter of Sinhala king Gandharvasen. Her unrivalled beauty was augmented by her preference of death to abduction and dishonour during the historic siege of Chittor in 1303 AD, by the Sultan of Delhi, Alauddin Khilji. Perched on a 180metre high hill, covering 700 acres and surrounded by 13 kilometres of battlement, the massive Chittorgarh fort holds a white, three storied palace that overlooks a pleasant lotus pool. Pavilions crown the palace roofs and a water moat delightfully surrounds it. Later the bronze gates to this pavilion were removed and transported to Agra by Akbar.
Ratan Singh was a patron of art. History traces the claims of a musician of his court named Raghav Chetan being a sorcerer and the incident of his banishment from the kingdom. This musician maliciously carried the word of Padmini's beauty to Alauddin Khilji who was roused to covetousness. It is said that Khilji tricked Ratan Singh as a friend and demanded to see Padmini. But as per the erstwhile Rajput custom, women kept distance from unknown people. Ratan Singh however allowed Khilji to get a glimpse of Padmini in a mirror placed in the main hall of Padmini Mahal. Her reflection so overwhelmed him that he frantically wanted to make her an adornment of his harem. This resulted to a number of intrigues and the final storming of Chittorgarh fort. The self immolation (Jauhar) conducted by the beautiful queen Padmini in order to save her moral integrity define her as a valiant queen who ever breathed in the land of Rajasthan, and in the whole of India. As an aftermath, Alauddin Khilji killed thirty thousand Hindus in revenge and entrusted the fort to his son Khizr Khan.
The marvellous architectural style of this palace and its picturesque surrounding act as a forerunner of the later palaces built in the midst of water. Padmini, the epitome of beauty resided in this palace, which makes it historically significant. Today a famous tourist spot of Rajasthan, Rani Padmini Palace stands as a feminine structure engulfed by a cascade of water, which at one point of time might have reflected the grace and gallant, the strength and spruce of the queen. Chittorgarh has a number of episodes imprinted in the pages of history.

Ratan Pandit full heartedly continues his ancestral craftmanship. Inspite being pushed to poverty in this losing battle with plastic, he stands strong. If people realize the hazards caused by plastic it will be a boon for mother nature and people like Ratan as well.

Rani Padmini/Padmavati (of Sri Lankan origin) was the queen of Chittor and the wife of King Rawal Ratan Singh. Her beauty, life and death has been the subject of many legends, ballads, and films. Many of these accounts are conflicting, and some historians consider her story to be fictional.
In 1303 AD, Alauddin Khilji, the Sultan of Delhi besieged Chittor fort, which was under the control of Rana Rawal Ratan Singh. The Rana was imprisoned and held hostage for Padmini (whom the Sultan wanted to add to his harem). Padmini sent misleading information that she would join Alauddin, but she was to come with 700 women as befitted her status. The Rajputs were thus able to infiltrate about 2000 men into Alauddin's camp hidden inside palanquins, each containg 2 soldiers and 4 men for lifting and passed off as Rajput women. Alauddin allowed Padmini one final meeting with her husband, which allowed the Rajputs to whisk Ratan Singh out. Beaten, Alauddin returned to Delhi to come back better equipped early the following year. The Rajput defence failed as a result of this second attack and perished on the battlefield while their womenfolk, led by Maharani Padmini, performed Jauhar.
Jauhar and Saka refer to the voluntary deaths of men and women of the Rajput clan in order to avoid capture and dishonour at the hands of their enemies. This was done sometimes by Hindu and Sikh women, in Mughal times and there are recorded incidences of this on a much smaller scale during the Partition in 1947 when women preferred death to being raped, turned into a slave or being forced into a marriage and to take their enemies' religion.
Jauhar was originally the voluntary death on a funeral pyre of the queens and royal womenfolk of defeated Rajput kingdoms. The term is extended to describe the occasional practice of mass suicide carried out in medieval times by Rajput women and men. This was usually done before or at the same time their husbands, brothers, fathers and sons rode out in a charge to meet their attackers and certain death. The upset caused by the knowledge that their women and younger children were dead, no doubt filled them with rage in this fight to the death called saka.
Chittorgarh Fort is the biggest fort in Asia, situated on a 180m-high hilltop is on about 280 hectare site. It is one of the most historically significant forts not only of Rajasthan but of the whole of North India. It was constructed by the Mauryans in the 7th century AD. It was the citadel of many great Rajput warriors such as Rana Kumbha, Maharana Pratap etc.
