EXPLORED ON 12 MARCH 2009 - # 342.

For about a year now, my daughter has been wanting to have a dog. Her demands have been consistent and polite, while she has been patient for my response.

Recently it became even more intense, especially after my wife and I took her to the movie "Marley & Me".

A few days ago, the fever spread. My wife also joined my daughter.

I had already made up my mind to get them a pup, and was just waiting for the right time. So today I teamed up with my friends Nrthya and Ranjith and we surprised both of them with Mango, our baby Dalmation pup. Both wife and daughter went berserk with excitedment, and I started to wonder whether it was more interesting to watch Mango, or my wife & daughter.

I think Mango will join the list of my favorite subjects and soon his photographs will appear all over Flickr, and elsewhere.

PS: Well as we were driving back home, we were thinking of various names, and the name Mango kept popping in my head again and again. In our family we love the fruit mango. Now we have a canine called Mango whom we adore too.

Hikkaduwa Ford. The story.

This guy, Hikkaduwa Ford or his more formal name Mr Ford, has a bit of a story. He is a beach dog in the town of Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka, mostly fending for himself when we met him five years ago. He had come to the beach just after the 2004 Tsunami and was still young. He was hungry and street (beach) wise but jumped at the affection and attention. It was also probably the first time he had played in his life – normally life was serious and centered around survival. We didn’t give him too much of anything because we knew he would have to fend for himself when we left the country, so as tough as it was, we couldn’t allow him to be reliant on us. Anyway we left Sri Lanka and came back a full year later. When we returned we rushed to the same spot we had last seen him. Sherylee gave her signature whistle and we waited. We were just hoping that he may still be alive although it was unlikely. It is not easy for a dog to survive on his own anywhere in the world and certainly not easy in Sri Lanka. Suddenly and miraculously, from over the back of the dunes we saw his head emerge and he came bolting down the beach – everything went into slow motion and I thought I could hear the music from Chariots of Fire. After the mad frenzy of greeting (he certainly had not forgotten us) we looked at him but, could hardly believe what we saw. He was knocking on heaven’s door. He was totally covered with mange (hardly any fur left), covered in sores, was sick and at the point of starvation. He probably only had a week or so left in him. It was then that we committed to always look after him. After months of care, pork chops, sausages and spaghetti he was back to health. He loves to wander about the whole length of the beach like he owns it. In the last three years he has had numerous run-ins with gangs of dogs on the beach as they ferociously protect their patch of the beach – he doesn’t really have a mean streak and so sometimes they get the better of him. So much so that some people in the area have nicknamed him Scarface. Also not long after we returned it looked like he may never be able to run or walk properly again. He was badly injured after being hit by a speeding tuk-tuk. Luck was on his side though and we took him to a fantastic vet in the Colombo capital who saved his bacon and his legs. He now cruises the beach daily and is reknowned in Hikkaduwa – the White Dog. We call him Hikkaduwa Ford. He is free to come and go at our place. He calls in (especially around dinner time) and sleeps over regularly. But, a lot of the time he just roams back down to the beach where his other world belongs. So if you ever go to Hikkaduwa, check out the beach to see if there is a white dog gazing out to sea - good chance it will be this guy, Hikkaduwa Ford.

The first recorded observation of a satellite reentry from a high-speed orbit, taken from a plane in bright daylight!

At 20:47 CEST on 8 September 2024, the first of four Cluster satellites (this one affectionately known as 'Salsa') returned home, burning up in Earth’s atmosphere in an uncontrolled ‘targeted reentry’ over a remote area of the South Pacific Ocean.

Throughout history, so far about 10 000 intact satellites and rocket bodies have reentered the atmosphere. Yet we still lack a clear view on what actually happens during a reentry.

Together with partners at Astros Solutions, ESA sent a plane to observe Salsa’s reentry live from the sky to observe a satellite class and reentry conditions which have never been accessible before. The plane successfully witnessed the reentry of Salsa, collecting rare data on how and when a satellite breaks up. This information will be used to make satellite reentries safer and more sustainable in the future.

The ROSIE-Salsa observation mission is a joint effort, with academic partners from University of Stuttgart (IRS/HEFDiG), Comenius University in Bratislava (CUB), the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) and industrial partners from Hypersonic Technology Göttingen (HTG) and Astros Solutions in close cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA).
