The original photo was scanned from a print that was produced in the 1990's. It needed some work. Much of the vibrancy of the various team colors has been restored as well the sky in the background. Because of the extensive negative space, I cropped the image to a 16x9 format.

Enjoy drift boat fishing on the world renowned Salmon River in Pulaski NY for hard fighting salmon or steelhead during the splendor of the fall, winter and spring seasons.

Whether it's trophy sized steelhead or salmon that you're after, I am dedicated to introducing both new and experienced anglers to the exciting world of freshwater fishing.

For novices, I place emphasis on Fly/Spin fishing skill and supplement the day with knots, fly/bait selection, fish habitats, and prey species. For the more experienced sportsman, I'll work with you to hone your fishing skills. I guarantee a rewarding experience.

I have a firm belief 100 % of my energy and time should be focused on you and helping you attain your goals, during our time together and not fishing along side you during this time.

I am a thoroughly proficient and professional year-round fly/spin fishing guide with 35 + years of fresh and salt water experience.

 

At 16 feet, my 285 pound guide drift boat is comfortable and a very stable platform . It is outfitted with a propane heater to keep you nice and toasty on even the coldest days. While you can Spin or Fly fish from the drift boat, I will often stop to let clients wade and fish a particularly productive run on the Salmon River NY. When the Steelhead or Salmon are concentrated in particular locations wading is the preferred option. At other times a drift boat is the only way to get to the fish. While I will give booking anglers a recommendation, you may want to experience one method over another. All you have to do is ask.

 

I'm a full-time professional fly/spin fishing guide with over 35 years of experience.

During the Fall, Winter, and Spring I run drift boat trips on the World Class Salmon River, Pulaski N.Y. using fly/spin and floats for Steelhead, Brown Trout, Coho, Atlantic's and King Salmon.

September through April

The Salmon River is located in Pulaski NY on Lake Ontario's eastern shore, 30 miles north of Syracuse. Its reputation for large runs of Salmon, Steelhead and incredible average size of all species is unsurpassed by any other fishery in New England.

 

September 1 - October 30

Tackle busting King Salmon averaging 10-20 lbs. will amaze you with their freight train runs. Trying to harness the raw power of a 12 lb Coho Salmon running in 20 different directions in a blink of an eye will keep you on your toes (and hopefully not on your back!)

 

October 15 - November

Brown Trout. Like Salmon and Steelhead you measure these Fish by the pound and not by the inch. They have entered the river to spawn and will weight from 3-10 pounds. While they are not as numerous as the Salmon or the Steelhead, these are an optional trophy of a Fishing life time.

 

October 20 - May 1

Steelhead 8-15 lbs. The Fall Steelhead is without a doubt, one of the hardest fighting Fish that swims in the Salmon River NY. They'll take you into your backing in seconds, then jump start your heart with tail walking antics that will live in your memory forever.

 

Winter - This is one of my favorite Drift Boat Guide Fishing times of the year. With colder temperatures the crowds disappear. Steelhead continue to come into the river from the lake. A winter Drift Boat trip aboard our heated Drift Boat is a great way to learn the river and experience it's beauty.

 

The end of February, March and April are great Steelhead Fishing days as new Fish move into and out of the river on a daily basis. As the river temperatures rise, so does the aggressiveness of the Steelhead. Often, sight fishing is possible as they move into the shallows.

We can Spin or Fly Fish for Salmon or Steelhead either by wading or using the Drift Boat..

Every time I go fishing, the optimist in me says "This might be the day." Athletes pray for days like this, hoping they play in "the zone." I think fishermen do too. Surely, this is what keeps many of us thrashing the water with a piece of string. I can count on one hand the number of days when this has happened. Two of them have been with you. The first was two years ago today, Oct. 8, when I hooked 40 or 50 fish, including a 35 lb male king that now sits above my fireplace as an reminder of that one remarkable day of fishing. The other was last Friday. Not only did I land a pair of nice Kings, I also caught my first Cohos, a beautiful male brown and three fall run steelhead, my first grand slam on the Salmon River. All told, I had maybe 20 hookups, while my buddy Myles had almost as many and landed cohos, a brown and several steelhead. It wasn't as if this was a great day on the river. I saw many long faces and shaking heads as other anglers came up empty, lost lead and flies to the river bottom and called it quits by midday. The credit for my experience is all yours. I know there are many fishermen who can work the Salmon River and catch plenty of fish, especially when a run is on. I can do it on my own sometimes. But putting it all together when the fishing is slow as you did is a testimony to your skill, knowledge and hard work. Looking forward to my next trip with you and the chance to yell "Fish On"!

The Salmon River is located in Pulaski NY on Lake Ontario's eastern shore, 30 miles north of Syracuse. Its reputation for large runs of Salmon, Steelhead and incredible average size of all species is unsurpassed by any other fishery in New England.

 

September 1 - October 30

Tackle busting King Salmon averaging 10-20 lbs. will amaze you with their freight train runs. Trying to harness the raw power of a 12 lb Coho Salmon running in 20 different directions in a blink of an eye will keep you on your toes (and hopefully not on your back!)

 

October 15 - November

Brown Trout. Like Salmon and Steelhead you measure these Fish by the pound and not by the inch. They have entered the river to spawn and will weight from 3-10 pounds. While they are not as numerous as the Salmon or the Steelhead, these are an optional trophy of a Fishing life time.

 

October 20 - May 1

Steelhead 8-15 lbs. The Fall Steelhead is without a doubt, one of the hardest fighting Fish that swims in the Salmon River NY. They'll take you into your backing in seconds, then jump start your heart with tail walking antics that will live in your memory forever.

 

Winter - This is one of my favorite Drift Boat Guide Fishing times of the year. With colder temperatures the crowds disappear. Steelhead continue to come into the river from the lake. A winter Drift Boat trip aboard our heated Drift Boat is a great way to learn the river and experience it's beauty.

 

The end of February, March and April are great Steelhead Fishing days as new Fish move into and out of the river on a daily basis. As the river temperatures rise, so does the aggressiveness of the Steelhead. Often, sight fishing is possible as they move into the shallows.

We can Spin or Fly Fish for Salmon or Steelhead either by wading or using the Drift Boat..

Every time I go fishing, the optimist in me says "This might be the day." Athletes pray for days like this, hoping they play in "the zone." I think fishermen do too. Surely, this is what keeps many of us thrashing the water with a piece of string. I can count on one hand the number of days when this has happened. Two of them have been with you. The first was two years ago today, Oct. 8, when I hooked 40 or 50 fish, including a 35 lb male king that now sits above my fireplace as an reminder of that one remarkable day of fishing. The other was last Friday. Not only did I land a pair of nice Kings, I also caught my first Cohos, a beautiful male brown and three fall run steelhead, my first grand slam on the Salmon River. All told, I had maybe 20 hookups, while my buddy Myles had almost as many and landed cohos, a brown and several steelhead. It wasn't as if this was a great day on the river. I saw many long faces and shaking heads as other anglers came up empty, lost lead and flies to the river bottom and called it quits by midday. The credit for my experience is all yours. I know there are many fishermen who can work the Salmon River and catch plenty of fish, especially when a run is on. I can do it on my own sometimes. But putting it all together when the fishing is slow as you did is a testimony to your skill, knowledge and hard work. Looking forward to my next trip with you and the chance to yell "Fish On"!

I am a thoroughly proficient and professional year-round fly/spin fishing guide with 35 + years of fresh and salt water experience.

 

At 16 feet, my 285 pound guide drift boat is comfortable and a very stable platform . It is outfitted with a propane heater to keep you nice and toasty on even the coldest days. While you can Spin or Fly fish from the drift boat, I will often stop to let clients wade and fish a particularly productive run on the Salmon River NY. When the Steelhead or Salmon are concentrated in particular locations wading is the preferred option. At other times a drift boat is the only way to get to the fish. The original photo was scanned from a print that was produced in the 1990's. It needed some work. Much of the vibrancy of the various team colors has been restored as well the sky in the background. Because of the extensive negative space, I cropped the image to a 16x9 format.

 

Every once in awhile, I step out of the box and present an authentic reproduction (at least as I remember it) in a different light. Topaz Labs has a suite of programs which I use daily in reproducing my stadium images. The filter I used on this image was from their Texture Effects software. It's a fresh look at a 40 year-old picture!

For novices, I place emphasis on Fly/Spin fishing skill and supplement the day with knots, fly/bait selection, fish habitats, and prey species. For the more experienced sportsman, I'll work with you to hone your fishing skills. I guarantee a rewarding experience.

I have a firm belief 100 % of my energy and time should be focused on you and helping you attain your goals, during our time together and not fishing along side you during this time.

I am a thoroughly proficient and professional year-round fly/spin fishing guide with 35 + years of fresh and salt water experience.

 

At 16 feet, my 285 pound guide drift boat is comfortable and a very stable platform . It is outfitted with a propane heater to keep you nice and toasty on even the coldest days. While you can Spin or Fly fish from the drift boat, I will often stop to let clients wade and fish a particularly productive run on the Salmon River NY. When the Steelhead or Salmon are concentrated in particular locations wading is the preferred option. At other times a drift boat is the only way to get to the fish. While I will give booking anglers a recommendation, you may want to experience one method over another. All you have to do is ask.

 

I'm a full-time professional fly/spin fishing guide with over 35 years of experience.

September through April

The Salmon River is located in Pulaski NY on Lake Ontario's eastern shore, 30 miles north of Syracuse. Its reputation for large runs of Salmon, Steelhead and incredible average size of all species is unsurpassed by any other fishery in New England.

 

September 1 - October 30

Tackle busting King Salmon averaging 10-20 lbs. will amaze you with their freight train runs. Trying to harness the raw power of a 12 lb Coho Salmon running in 20 different directions in a blink of an eye will keep you on your toes (and hopefully not on your back!)

 

October 15 - November

Brown Trout. Like Salmon and Steelhead you measure these Fish by the pound and not by the inch. They have entered the river to spawn and will weight from 3-10 pounds. While they are not as numerous as the Salmon or the Steelhead, these are an optional trophy of a Fishing life time.

 

October 20 - May 1

Steelhead 8-15 lbs. The Fall Steelhead is without a doubt, one of the hardest fighting Fish that swims in the Salmon River NY. They'll take you into your backing in seconds, then jump start your heart with tail walking antics that will live in your memory forever.

 

Winter - This is one of my favorite Drift Boat Guide Fishing times of the year. With colder temperatures the crowds disappear. Steelhead continue to come into the river from the lake. A winter Drift Boat trip aboard our heated Drift Boat is a great way to learn the river and experience it's beauty.

 

The end of February, March and April are great Steelhead Fishing days as new Fish move into and out of the river on a daily basis. As the river temperatures rise, so does the aggressiveness of the Steelhead. Often, sight fishing is possible as they move into the shallows.

We can Spin or Fly Fish for Salmon or Steelhead either by wading or using the Drift Boat..

Every time I go fishing, the optimist in me says "This might be the day." Athletes pray for days like this, hoping they play in "the zone." I think fishermen do too. Surely, this is what keeps many of us thrashing the water with a piece of string. I can count on one hand the number of days when this has happened. Two of them have been with you. The first was two years ago today, Oct. 8, when I hooked 40 or 50 fish, including a 35 lb male king that now sits above my fireplace as an reminder of that one remarkable day of fishing. The other was last Friday. Not only did I land a pair of nice Kings, I also caught my first Cohos, a beautiful male brown and three fall run steelhead, my first grand slam on the Salmon River. All told, I had maybe 20 hookups, while my buddy Myles had almost as many and landed cohos, a brown and several steelhead. It wasn't as if this was a great day on the river. I saw many long faces and shaking heads as other anglers came up empty, lost lead and flies to the river bottom and called it quits by midday. The credit for my experience is all yours. I know there are many fishermen who can work the Salmon River and catch plenty of fish, especially when a run is on. I can do it on my own sometimes. But putting it all together when the fishing is slow as you did is a testimony to your skill, knowledge and hard work. Looking forward to my next trip with you and the chance to yell "Fish On"!

While you can Spin or Fly fish from the drift boat, I will often stop to let clients wade and fish a particularly productive run on the Salmon River NY. When the Steelhead or Salmon are concentrated in particular locations wading is the preferred option. At other times a drift boat is the only way to get to the fish. While I will give booking anglers a recommendation, you may want to experience one method over another. All you have to do is ask.

September through April

The Salmon River is located in Pulaski NY on Lake Ontario's eastern shore, 30 miles north of Syracuse. Its reputation for large runs of Salmon, Steelhead and incredible average size of all species is unsurpassed by any other fishery in New England.

 

September 1 - October 30

Tackle busting King Salmon averaging 10-20 lbs. will amaze you with their freight train runs. Trying to harness the raw power of a 12 lb Coho Salmon running in 20 different directions in a blink of an eye will keep you on your toes (and hopefully not on your back!)

 

October 15 - November

Brown Trout. Like Salmon and Steelhead you measure these Fish by the pound and not by the inch. They have entered the river to spawn and will weight from 3-10 pounds. While they are not as numerous as the Salmon or the Steelhead, these are an optional trophy of a Fishing life time.

 

October 20 - May 1

Steelhead 8-15 lbs. The Fall Steelhead is without a doubt, one of the hardest fighting Fish that swims in the Salmon River NY. They'll take you into your backing in seconds, then jump start your heart with tail walking antics that will live in your memory forever.

 

Winter - This is one of my favorite Drift Boat Guide Fishing times of the year. With colder temperatures the crowds disappear. Steelhead continue to come into the river from the lake. A winter Drift Boat trip aboard our heated Drift Boat is a great way to learn the river and experience it's beauty.

 

The end of February, March and April are great Steelhead Fishing days as new Fish move into and out of the river on a daily basis. As the river temperatures rise, so does the aggressiveness of the Steelhead. Often, sight fishing is possible as they move into the shallows.

We can Spin or Fly Fish for Salmon or Steelhead either by wading or using the Drift Boat..

Every time I go fishing, the optimist in me says "This might be the day." Athletes pray for days like this, hoping they play in "the zone." I think fishermen do too. Surely, this is what keeps many of us thrashing the water with a piece of string. I can count on one hand the number of days when this has happened. Two of them have been with you. The first was two years ago today, Oct. 8, when I hooked 40 or 50 fish, including a 35 lb male king that now sits above my fireplace as an reminder of that one remarkable day of fishing. The other was last Friday. Not only did I land a pair of nice Kings, I also caught my first Cohos, a beautiful male brown and three fall run steelhead, my first grand slam on the Salmon River. All told, I had maybe 20 hookups, while my buddy Myles had almost as many and landed cohos, a brown and several steelhead. It wasn't as if this was a great day on the river. I saw many long faces and shaking heads as other anglers came up empty, lost lead and flies to the river bottom and called it quits by midday. The credit for my experience is all yours. I know there are many fishermen who can work the Salmon River and catch plenty of fish, especially when a run is on. I can do it on my own sometimes. But putting it all together when the fishing is slow as you did is a testimony to your skill, knowledge and hard work. Looking forward to my next trip with you and the chance to yell "Fish On"!

As I was rummaging through some old files I came across this story written by a fellow angler. Walt W. was the Author. Enjoy!

 

It pretty much sums up what fishing means to the author.

 

" THE TUG"..."

 

The fisherman rummaged slowly and deliberately though the trunk of his car, collecting all the gear he would need for a mornings fishing. It was an hour before dawn and as dark as any moon less night could be. He parked at the lighthouse this July morning, hoping to ambush some striped bass. He rigged his rod, finishing by tying on a super hair clouser, a sand eel imitation he’d had success with in these waters. He descended the long metal stairs from the lighthouse, focusing his small headlight on each set of steps until his bare feet touched the sand. The beach, crowded by day, was a solitary fisherman’s paradise by night.

 

As he walked, he pondered why he did this at all. He could easily have slept in and led a normal life—that day or on the many other days he choose to come to this place in search of fish. He asked himself: “What is it that really brings me here?”

Half a mile’s walk brought him to a sand spit that shoots out into the Atlantic. From the point of the spit, he cast, still blind in the dark, into a weak outgoing current. He knew he would be able to fish that spot later, when he headed back and when the stronger, lower current forced the fish to lay in wait in holes .

 

He pushed south on the beach, knowing, but not yet seeing its tip and Monomoy Island beyond. He paused and looked at his rod and reel, wondering why he needed gear that cost more than his first car in college. He knew he could fish as well with far less expensive equipment. Again, he asked himself: “Why do I do this? Certainly the equipment was part of it. He loved spotting that fly catalog sitting in a pile of the day’s mail. He loved looking at a striper in his hands in the moment before releasing it—wondering if he would ever see exactly that golden eye, those purples and greens, that barred silver flank again. He loved everything about fly fishing. But there was something more—an essence he just couldn’t identify.

 

He continued along the beach, expecting maybe to see a fishing buddy there before him. But he saw no one this morning. He sniffed in the false dawn and felt the light southwesterly onshore breeze that would bring in bait, even on the early outgoing tide. A perfect tide and perfect conditions for striped bass. All that was missing was the scent of cucumbers in the air, a sure indicator of feeding stripers. He knew, too, that birds would start to fly as the darkness left and the dawn approached. Soon he saw terns flying and diving here and there along the surf line

After an hour of casting into familiar and usually productive holes along the surf line, he stopped. Not because he wasn’t hooking up, but because he was thinking to much. Too much for fishing anyway. He spotted a natural bench along a high berm created by the outgoing tide. He sat down, lit up a short, fat, maduro cigar, and kept on turning in his mind the “why” of what brought him there. He couldn’t shake the question. It made him stop fishing. Something didn’t add up.

 

The same questions came to him over and over again, and he tried to find some logical common thread. Was it the equipment he loved? Was it the time he spent? Was it the hooking, fighting, landing, and then releasing the fish? Was it the hunt? Learning new things each time he went out? The perfect cast? The constant search to improve his technique? He loved to walk the beach whether he fished or not. He loved to tie flies, more than he would need in five lifetimes. He loved the heft and craftsmanship of all the rods and reels he owned, even if he didn’t need them all—the Sages, Scotts, Winstons, Abels, Tibors, Orvis and Pates. He had them all, an investment worth more than his parents’ first house/a year’s tuition for his daughter. He thought of the sound and feel of the reel zinging into it’s backing and the pull of the fish on the end of the line. Was it stopping? Was it resting? When would it make it’s next long run?

 

He continued to sit, passing up valuable fishing time as the sun rose though the mild fog that Chatham was famous for in that season. He knew fog meant more productive fishing time, but still he sat, struggling to find the answer, the common denominator that brought it all together for him. The perfect cast was a key thing, he thought, like the perfect drive in golf. But that wasn’t the core of it. It was something else. All of it—the gear, the flies, the friendships, the weather and and water were part of it…but not it. His cigar was good and strong and he wished he had a coffee to go with it. His real cigar and wished-for coffee made him forget his search for a moment . Something began to come to him, however, just slightly, as he puffed on the cigar. He had to bring it back to its most fundamental thing. What was this fundamental thing? He had to finish the thinking, bring it to its conclusion. Why do I do this? Why do I fly fish? Certainly all that he had thought about was part of the whole. But he wanted to find the beginning of the whole. It was coming…slowly but more clearly.

 

He was thoughtful and reflective by nature, and now he couldn’t let go. He turned over all the elements, reducing each to its essence, until it came to him. “It” was incredibly simple. All the time he’d devoted to his fishing, all the money spent on the equipment, all the trips, all the fly tying materials, all the books, all the catalogs…all this was simply secondary to it…to that solitary, unmistakable, indescribable, fleeting rush of adrenaline that came in the instant of time when he felt the first tug.

Complementary Guide Tip and Lesson for the week:

Non-transitional Prime holding - Approx. 20-30% of these steelhead are in the heat, while 70-80% have moved into the Winter lyes. (Hint - Water temp. approx. 40 degrees)

All hab's producing.

1. When the Steelhead are running, fish there temporary transitional resting points as they make there way up the river. Otherwise, you are fishing to fish that are not stopping, decreasing your odds greatly, in my opionion.

2. Once they stop to hold for the remainder of the day, fish these prime transitional holding waters. (Approx. 15% of steelhead that are in the river system)

3. Find these prime non-transitional holding places in the river all Winter, and just fish those. After all, they aren't going anywhere soon. (Approx. 85% of steelhead that are in the river system)

Be glad it wasn't you - Funny Story:

A guide friend told me that Friday in the early morning darkness he was walking in the moving river water to place his drift boat anchor in the "hot spot." He unfortunately did what I call a superman dive (arms out in front and legs out behind) and fell in the water, getting the normal and much cherished "Salmon River Baptism.". He said he had water pouring into his waders and was wet from his ear's to the tips of his toes. He was wet, but ok. Later in the morning as some of us bank anglers (I might add, we were ALL hitting steelhead) on the bank were watching his client try to land a big steelhead we noticed a steady plume of black smoke rising from his drift boat heater. Coupl'a of the guys yelled to him that something was on fire in his boat. Turns out, that in his haste to try to net his clients fish, some how his rubber oar handle ended up on his heater and started to burn and melt? Never a dull moment on this river

Incredible weather and water level

This weekend will be cwaaaazy bizzy w/ anglers. Great for the local economy! I noticed a increase in anglers fishing on Friday. Why?

1. Nice air temperatures. No blizzards forecast, so all the fair weather anglers will be out.

2. The word has gotten out about ALL the Steelhead that are around.

3. Most anglers stayed away from the 1,500 cfs plus, water flows and have been waiting for the water to drop to a level that they are more familiar and comfortable with.

4. Economy doing well.

Why will this Dec. be a banner steelhead Month?

Lot's of steelhead around, lot's of anglers will be busy with family - Biz. holiday obligations, hunting, warm - fair weather anglers will be putting their skirts on for the Winter (yukyuk) only a few of us "Full - Time" Guides will be working. Complementary Tips:

Steelhead top to bottom of river with fresh Chrome entering daily. Running the river spreading out. All Fall Spots still producing.

With the water temperature around 40 degrees, we are seeing some of the residents transferring into their Winter lyes.

It's approx. 30% Fall spots, 30% Winter spots and 30% inbetween. All Transitional holding, resting and Prime holding water is hold'n.

Every type of habitat is producing. The entire river is producing. You can find them almost anywhere presently.

Even heard reports of a few fresh Kings and Coho Salmon in the river.

This last week we played with on average 10 to 14 Steelhead daily. On 1 day, my one guest w/ a fly rod hit 18 Steelhead!

Another day my 2 very experienced spin clients played w/ over 20!! Ye-Haa!

Had what I call a DAY for KINGS!

For the first 2 hour's skunk, nothing, nada, not even a sucker in a spot where the steelhead had been loaded the day before. I started to chain smoke, chew tobacco and put on a nicotine patch. (kidding) Glad I gave up drinking. (har-har) I was getting nervous. I knew that most of these Steelhead were residents who had set up shop in this prime lye. But, where were they? I pulled anchor and guessed with the water temperature dropping they were all just a lil lower in the deeper, less current habitat. I was right!

We HAMMERED over 20 Steelhead with my 2 very experienced Steelhead guest's! One after the other! Darn, I love this job!

The previous day I had the luxury to be able to move the driftboat around freely and fish different prime area's. We had approx. 18 Steelhead on that day with 1 guest useing a fly rod!

Egg sack's, hot shoting (plugging w/ drift boat), beads and flies are all producing daily. The wade - shore anglers are having a lot of success also. It's always nice to share the fish, water and see other's out enjoying this incredible fishery w/ success!

I would highly recommend coming up to do some Steelhead fishing.

From the Mail Bag:

Randy I would appreciate your thoughts regarding what is the appropriate "line" to use for the butt section of the fly leader when fishing for steelhead. I use 12 pound clear mono between the floating fly line and barrel swivel and then fluorocarbon for a tippet. But I also observe others using a dark brown line for this section and referred to as "chameleon". Not sure if it makes a difference, but the darker color leader is claimed to be an advantage during bright sunny days; less reflection off the line. Thus the late day activity I experienced Wednesday may not be the result of warmer water temperature, but less sunlight to reduce the reflection (or it could have been a push of steelhead entering the tailout). Thanks. Dick.

HI Dick,

The brown mono is Maxima. Some guides use it exclusively, even for leaders or tippets to fly, bait.

It breaks approx. 1 -1/2 lb/s more than what it is rated for. (Please see my Links-The Very Best page for the best in Mono and Fluorocarbon, it all breaks at what its rated for and is also what most of the tournament anglers use around the world for all species. Its also used by many for any local, regional, national, world record hold'rs)

Blends in with a dark bottom river. Never thought about reflective qualities, hmmm.

For traditional fly casting a tapered leader transfer's the energy the best.

I just use clear 10-12 lb. straight mono for butt.

An 8 lb. mono straight butt is less current - water resistance than heavier - Diameter, so you will get into the strike zone quick'r and stay longer. Also feel the bottom better.

But, a good snag will sometimes break it, so keep an eye on it. Thats why I use a 10-12 lb. Less knot tying and lost total rig's.

Clients spend more time fishing and less time waiting on me to tie all those knots. Also, my hands stay warmer when its cold .

A Sampling of Fishing Reports from some of last month's Steelhead trips on the Salmon River in Pulaski NY:

I think I canceled or rescheduled more trips last month due to unsafe and uncomfortable (driving here and fishing) weather (wind chill) than I actually worked. Thats normal and I'd rather have you be comfortable and safe than take any chances of a driving accident getting here or going home, frost bite while fishing or anything else. For this guide, you come first, before the almighty dollar :)

One of my better trips recently:

My 2 guest's experienced their first time Steelhead fishing. They came back amazed at the numbers of fish we played with but most importantly, the knowledge they gained. For them, the fish were second to achieving a rock solid Steelhead fishing foundation on which to build. That was their main goal, to which we succeeded! I think we played with about 10-11 Steelies for the day. Just icing on the cake. :)

My slowest trips recently:

My 2 guest's were VERY VERY experienced. We had three or four on and off reeeel quick. One that pulled hard and fast before breaking off. And landed One. Ouch! Never know :)

Hit Steelhead in 3 out of 5 spots today. Played with about 8 total for the day. The 2 spots we didn't hit any fish in were only fished for about 5-10 minutes.

Im sure there were fish there, and we would have found some if we had stayed longer, but we were only looking for some McDonald's fish. (Fast and easy:)

My guest's from yesterday decided to fish a 1/2 day instead of our full because of the impending sleet, snow, rain and lot's of freezing rain in the forecast. They got out of town before it really hit which made me feel better.

In our 1/2 days fishing we tangled with 5 Steelhead. Not bad! Yesterday we went on a Nantucket sleigh ride. We gave chase in the boat and were surrounded with a very narrow river, fast water, log jam's, fish running under the boat in about every direction, boulders, fish moving from one side of the boat to the other, my oar blades, rapids, tree's, you name it. We had to zig and zag our way through this obstacle course with a mad and dashing Steelhead on. Pheeew! Finally that steelhead had had enough and gave up. It was netted nicely off the side of the drift boat as we drifted down the river. Talk about a Chinese fire drill! It would have been a hilarious show to watch as I tried to run the oar's, anchor, missing all the obstacles and net while keeping everyone safe and upright in the boat all at once. :)

What a fight, what an adrenaline rush, DAM, I love this job!

Winter Steelhead Fishing Tip:

The fish today in one Winter holding pool did not want any natural looking aquatic insect flies and would ONLY hit glow bug's in pink and cream. (We did not try bait or any other egg colors) In a transitional holding spot they only wanted the aquatics.

After working the entire hole with aquatics with no bites? I tied on a glow bug in Pink and on the first cast, it was hammered "Fish On", Baby! The second rod doubled over in the hole within 5 minutes of changing to a cream glow bug. Boy, it sure pay's to have a pretty good understanding of entomology and baitology on this river. It also paid dividends to be able to listen to what the fish were telling us related to their eating habit's and adjust. I knew we had a minimum of 10-15 steelhead in this spot that wanted nothing to do with our insect fly offering. By paying close attention, we were able to fool a couple before pulling the anchor. 2 more fish came from the next transitional lye before calling it a day. :)

Slow day today - Played with a coupe of fish. Worked on presentation most of the day. Nobody on the river today due to the ice forecast last night and this morning. Not bad at all. Very comfortable and no ice to deal with.

Winter Steelhead Fishing Tip: Ice in your guides?

The best stuff to use is either silicone spray or Ice Off Paste, sold at most tackle shops. Whitakers has it. Works on both fly and spin rods. The paste works the best if you put it on the night before. Re-apply as needed while fishing.

My guest today had 4-5 goals that we wanted to achieve. A better, complete, expert analysis and understanding of flies, tying flies, reading water, presentation, Steelhead strategies, rigging, how does the lower and higher water effect the fish, were do the fish lay in all the holes, high water current breaks, where to stand in every hole, how to access each hole, advanced rigging and presentation, stream etiquette, where to cross the river safely, how to rig and present a fly-bait while sight fishing to the Bucks in the Spring, Spring strategies, Winter strategies, where to find the Bucks in the Spring and lastly and least important were to catch fish.

Ken only had 4-5 goals but I covered all of the above and much more. This is a normal day for me. We hit some fish while completely and thoroughly achieving all of Kens goals plus some! :)

We spent time in each and every hole over a 3 mile distance. Approx. 40 or more spot's. (Boy, my throat was sore at days end from all the talking, nice change from the usual :)

We saw fish with the help of todays sun. Saw a fair number of fish that were in a transitional state, moving up the river and briefly holding in the transitional lyes.

October 15 - November - Brown Trout. Like Salmon and Steelhead you measure these Fish by the pound and not by the inch. Tues. - 2 very experienced expert Salmon River anglers, hit 21, yes, that was 21 Steelhead off the drift boat!

Wed. - Over a dozen Steelhead played with off the guided drift boat.

Thurs. - Over 17 Steelhead hooked up off the drift boat!

Monster Salmon pulls angler into Salmon River!

Guide Randy Jones risks his own safety by attempting to lasso a client with net to keep him from being dragged into river by monster fish.

 

Wayland is tied into a monster Salmon that by size more resembled the Loch Ness monster than the usual autumn King. Wayland yelled, "Help Randy, I've got a monster on here and its pulling me into the river." (best to imagine this panicked cry done in a Scottish brogue) "I canna' hold 'er much longer Cap'n. HELP!"

 

In my attempt to keep Wayland from being pulled into the river by this world record Salmon, with no thoughts for my own safety and well-being, I threw the net over his head. Unfortunately the fish was too strong and my guest too weak from the battle. Despite my best efforts to save him, all was lost when suddenly my net handle broke! In went Wayland into the deep, angry white water rapids. He did a perfect belly flop but still managed to hang onto the rod.

 

As one eyewitness reported later, "Between the strong deep currents and this beast of a fish, all we could see was his rod tip sticking out of the water by a foot as it started downstream." Witnesses fishing further down reported that Wayland was able to briefly gain his feet for a short time and ski behind the demonic salmon. However, it appeared that after skiing over several large boulders he lost his footing on an old roe sack discarded by a bait fisherman and resumed his submerged journey. Last sightings reported seeing his baseball cap surrounded by little tiny bubbles headed at a high-rate of speed towards the open water of Lake Ontario.

As a professional guide of the highest moral and ethical standards, I am extremely worried about this situation involving my former client.

Therefore, if anyone finds a old gaffer in a water-logged ball cap zipping around the river tight to a monster Salmon but still with his tip up, please email...I would like to get my net back.

Thank you for several memorable trips this year on the Salmon River NY. The highlight of the year was definitely the outing on the Salmon River during September. Never have I experienced such numbers of large and aggressive Salmon in all my 45 years of fishing. I estimate we had over 60 hook-ups on King Salmon and caught and released 12, two of which were between 30 and 35 pounds. Close behind was the spring drift boat trip for Steelhead on the remote stretch of Pucker-brush Creek. Seeing over 2 dozen Steelhead off the drift boat in a one mile stretch, with no one else around, reminded me of Alaska. After those experiences, I decided traveling to the Northwest Territories for lake trout and grayling or to Labrador for brook trout are a thing of the past and I will concentrate on the quality of fishing available in New York State. If you ever need a recommendation, I would be pleased to provide one.

October 15 - November - Brown Trout. Like Salmon and Steelhead you measure these Fish by the pound and not by the inch.Salmon drift boat guide fishing for steelhead and salmon on the Salmon River in Pulaski NY They have entered the river to spawn and will weight from 3-10 pounds. While they are not as numerous as the Salmon or the Steelhead, these are an optional trophy of a Fishing life time.

October 20 - May 1 - Steelhead 8-15 lbs. The Fall Steelhead is without a doubt, one of the hardest fighting Fish that swims in the Salmon River NY. They'll take you into your backing in seconds, then jump start your heart with tail walking antics that will live in your memory forever.

Winter - This is one of my favorite Drift Boat Guide Fishing times of the year. With colder temperatures the crowds disappear. Steelhead continue to come into the river from the lake. A winter Drift Boat trip aboard our heated Drift Boat is a great way to learn the river and experience it's beauty.

The end of February, March and April are great Steelhead Fishing days as new Fish move into and out of the river on a daily basis. As the river temperatures rise, so does the aggressiveness of the Steelhead. Often, sight fishing is possible as they move into the shallows.

We can Spin or Fly Fish for Salmon or Steelhead either by wading or using the Drift Boat..

First Mate Matt, dad Capt. Jerry and myself out on my 16 foot heated drift boat, enjoying a Steelhead filled day during the Winter on the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY. 35 minutes drive North of Syracuse off the Interstate. Approx. 5-1/2 hour drive from the Boston area, approx. 4-1/2 hour's from N.Y. City. Steelhead average 8 to 12 lb's. We fish for them from Nov. all Winter into the first week of May approx. My personal favorite time to fish for them in order of preference, April, Dec. Jan. Feb. Mar. and Nov. I have a BIG propane heater on the drift boat that I use during the Winter to help take the chill off. :) Works great!

We also fish for (10-20 lb. average) King Salmon (8-12lb.average) Coho Salmon that run from Mid-Sept. until the end of Oct. Then we have Brown trout that average 3-5 lb's. with some reaching into the teens during Nov.

Very reasonable flight's into Syracuse, car rentals, very inexpensive lodging, food and guide rates. :)

Again both Rick and I thank you for another great trip. I continue to marvel at both your knowledge of the Salmon River and the patience exercised in providing instructions on the techniques necessary to successfully catch fish; with the bonus of enabling us to fish with the best Orvis equipment. There may have been a lot of fisherman in the Douglaston Run, but I seriously doubt anyone one was as successful as Rik and I in hooking-up on as many salmon. (And lucky Rik catches his first Steelhead of 20lbs on his first cast of the day.) When I recall us fishing a pool in the afternoon and hooking 18 to 20 salmon in a three hour period while an array of other fisherman fishing the same pool never got a strike, is a tribute to your superior abilities as a guide. I consider myself fortunate to be able to fish with you as many times as I have in such a short period of time (I believe it was my seventh trip in one and one half years.) There will hopefully be many more trips and all will be you if you continue to be available. Those three successful spring steelhead trips with you has me now hooked. As I have repeatedly stated to my many fishing friends, you can either go fishing or you can charter Drift Boat Guide Randy for "catching".

Brown Trout Fishing Report

Wed. - My guest's from Tues. joined me again today for another incredible fishing experience. At times we had a dozen 2-4 lb. Browns within a 10 by 10 foot area of the water. Sighted over 75 - 85 Browns over the course of the day with not another sole around. LOADED!! :) Incredible opportunity ALL day.

I hope you all have the chance to some day experience this truly magnificent fishery! Today we felt as though we were in Alaska, and NOT around one of the most popular fishing area's in the country! The fish we played with and landed were WAY to many to try to keep track off. Don't ya just hate when THAT happens? :)

ALL of these fish are just waiting here for YOUR, perfectly cast bait or fly. :)

Salmon River NY Steelhead Fishing Report's, Forecast's, Tips, Ramblings, Articles, Enjoy!

Best fishing in many years and it's not over yet!

(I'll be guiding into May. Still have a couple of dates open, if intrested)

All of those fish that had to run by us this past Fall and Winter are all sitting above us. Some have already started to drop back down the river. Those Steelhead have to pass all of us once again, giving us all another opportunity to play with these magnificent memorable fish.

3/31 - A good percentage of the fish in the river are actively spawning. A lot are all finding mates or have found their mates and are now edging closer to their spawning grounds as we speak. These are still holding in the normal current breaks for this water flow. The balance of the fish in the river are the drop backs. We are starting to see these now. They will be in their normal current breaks for this flow of water. Eating everything in sight to rebuild their strength back.

Almost every piece of water running into the lake or the Salmon River is with fish, in our area. Ye-haa! This is a great time of the year to either walk all of the surrounding creeks, river or streams. Or, fish all of your normal spot's on the Salmon River. We all have SOOOOOOOO many incredible options to choose from presently. You could pretty much just flip a coin on where to fish. They are EVERYWHERE!

Presently, you pretty much have Steelhead that are in all stages (start to finish) of the spawn. (Entering the river, finding mates, pairing up, thinking about building a red, locating themselves to different area's, males fighting over the females, etc....) Each stage is unique. Each stage normally puts different requirements on the fish and causes the angler to adjust. (In my opinion, but what the heck do I know. :)

I heard a rumor that it might start to warm up in August? (he-he) Time to check the weather. I hope your enjoying the fishing as much as my guest's and myself have been and I hope to see you on the water with your rod doubled over!

Lot's of water saturated snow all around and especially up on the tug. Today, 3/31, we have a lot of rain, thunderstorms, very high and gusty winds and finally warmer air temp's forecast over the next several days.

-

Things can and often do change around here in a day. Expect a lot more water in the river and all of our local tribs with the balance of some fresh steelhead running in. With the ground being 100% saturated with water this will cause additional run-off. This is all very normal and to be expected. Not an issue related to the fishing. Once again, no matter the flow, ton's of options. As the water levels fluctuate, we simply adjust, just like the fish do. :)

The drift boat - wade fishing for steelhead continues to remain excellent for some, ok for others and slooooow for smoothers. This is normal and I dont foresee any changes. All fishing techniques are working, all with different success rates, which again is normal.

My 1 guest and I had a great day! He played with over 8 Steelhead by himself! Ye-haa. Beautiful day and hardly a sole on the water?

Just when I thought yesterday would be a hard day to match, todays guest's did. My 2 guest's pounded out about 14-15 Steelhead. Carl had never landed a steelhead before. Today he lost his cherry by landing one.

He also played with more Steelhead in a day than ever before. He was ecstatic along with myself!

We had a number of highlight's for the day.

On almost the first cast into the hole and almost at the exact same time both of my guest's hooked up. Doubles! Talk about a Chinese fire drill with lines crossing, up - down. Exciting to say the least!

T.M. could not believe what happened in the next pool. On 3 cast's, he hooked up on all in a row. One after the other.

We batted 100% on spot's and played with fish in all. A grand day all around. Succeeding in all aspect's of my guest's goals. Dam, I love this job! :)

Today we hit 5 Steelhead with 2 new Salmon River anglers while landing 1 of them. Great day all around.

My one angler who was brand new to the river used a fly rod and got to tangle with an amazing 10 Steelhead for the day! Wow.

Another amazing day with 9-10 Steelies. Hit them in 4 out of 6 places. Dont gwet much but'a!

Sounds like a broken record but another 9-10 Steelies with my two anglers.

In another days fishing we tangled with 5-6 Steelies in under 4 hours fishing time. Im finding fish in every spot! Ye-haa! Come get'm. Fishing has been hot and looks to continue. Still a few open dates for April - May. :)

Some anglers having a slow time of it while others doing ok to great! Very normal. All the creeks are with fish. (Hint:) Such a nice guide to share. Hope it helps you to hook-up.

By reading the above sampling of March's Fishing Reports. You can see why I'm recommending you make the trip up here. Also, you can tell that the fish are pretty much spread out evenly in just about every single current break that fish's at its optimum with the correct water level.

No matter whether it's 400 cfs or 3,000cfs. (Please see the below article on Habitat and Reading the Water if you want to learn more about this.)

Another way to say it and or report what Im seeing:

I have sooooo many fishing options presently. Im not sure whether Ill fish the UDL, Norwell, Snout, Salmon River, diversions, branch's of some of these trib's., Candies, Lil, Pucker Brush, wade, drift boat, fly-spin, etc, etc...or a lil of all.

There are soooo many good options presently, I may just flip a coin in the morning.

Im finding fish in almost every hole on the Salmon River. Also, we still have fresh fish coming into the river and also starting to see drop backs. On top of this we have fish in all the normal places that have not gone to the gravel yet.

**** So, if they are running in fresh, been in the river for awhile and have not gone to the gravel yet, are spawning and seeking shelter during the day in the closest deep water or are dropping back, this puts them all in the normal places you would fish the Salmon River in this flow. (Heads, seams, tails and sometimes the gut or hole within the hole - just another name or example of a current break)

I hope this makes it all a lil easier to understand. :)
